Week Ending December 31st
The last two weeks of December saw us out on Johns Lake a lot. Water temps were running mid 60’s to low 70’s in this time frame, and bass showed sporadic schooling action in various areas of the lake. Typical bass in the schools have been running right at 2 pounds, with several bass in the four pound class also being caught. Waters are still low, but very fishable, with some bass being caught in less than a foot of water on Gitem K.O’s and Gitem Shads. Deer Island Cut has seen some good schooling action, with bass being caught on Live bait as well as Storm WildEye Curl Tail Minnows, rattle traps and spinner baits.
Once the schooling action tapered off, offshore grass beds seemed to be the place to fish, especially the isolated grass patches, pitching weighted worms, and senko type baits to these isolated grass patches kept the action steady. The bigger offshore grass beds the bass would charge live bait that was slow trolled along the outside edges, with some bass being caught pitching live bait into small open pockets in the grass beds, be sure to have a good line, as when they hit, they dart into the heaviest areas of the grass and will break you off. HiSeas Black Widow line has done a great job at pulling those bass out of the grasses.
On a side note, I had the great pleasure of having Kathy ”Ketchup” Barker and RC from ProBass Network along with “Ketchups” dad Ken on Johns Lake and it was great watching Ken spank everyone when it came to catching the bass. Altho Ken was rather quiet, if you didn’t watch him, he would sneak a bass to the boat without even a peep, and from what I hear, he has not let up on rubbing it in to Kathy. Way to go pops, and keep bragging, you earned the right.
With my sister in town for the holidays, I managed to get her and my dad out on the water for a few hours on Johns Lake. With my dad not fishing freshwater since the 70’s, and my sister never having fished for bass, it took a few missed hook ups before they got the hang of things. Using live bait to make things easier for them, they managed to boat some good bass, with the big gal coming in right at 4 pounds.
We have been seeing bass beds starting to pop up around Johns Lake, so it should be only a matter of time before they hit the beds and the bigger gals start getting caught. Remember to handle these bass as little as possible and gently put them back in the water if your fishing the beds, these bass repopulating our great lakes is what makes fishing in Florida the place to be.

Dear Fishing Friends:
SUMMARY: Happy New Year everyone! Winter Steelheading is in full swing although the cold weather has slowed it down a bit. Sometimes it only means shorter fishing days but the “determined” fishermen are still getting out there. Some would say they’re “crazy”! The Zymoetz (Copper) River closes to angling above the sign at the transmission line crossing (below Zymoetz Canyon) at the end of the month (January 1 to June 15). So get out and enjoy before the closure. To be clear just the upper reaches of the river are closed one still may angle on the very low end, just make sure you fish below the boundary at the first canyon. The Kalum River is open to angling all winter although access to some pools are difficult as to the extreme low water and snow. The Kitimat River is open all winter also and if we get some warmer weather fishing for Trout should be OK.

WATER CONDITIONS: The Skeena is very low and in good shape although sections of the river are frozen over. The Zymoetz (Copper) River is in good shape but ice is starting to form. Also some parts of the river are completely frozen over. The Kalum (upper and lower) River is in excellent shape. Kitimat River is low and clean.

SKEENA RIVER: The water is in good shape, low and clean. Frozen over in spots. Should be a few Steelhead and Trout one can catch if you can “brave” the weather.
KALUM RIVER: The water, both upper and lower sections are in excellent shape and fishing for Steelhead is good.

ZYMOETZ (COPPER) RIVER: The water is in poor shape today, with moderate to heavy ice flows and fishing for Steelhead is poor. Just a little too cold. The upper section closes at the end of the month (December 31) but the lower section below the first canyon will stay open for the winter Steelheaders to enjoy.
AREA RIVER RECORDS: Chinook Salmon: Skeena River, 92.5-pounds; Kalum River, 85-pounds; Kitimat River, 74-pounds; Steelhead: Skeena River, 45-pounds; Coho Salmon: Skeena River, 27-pounds.

WEATHER: Wintertime in Los Cabos still beats wintertime anywhere to the north of us! Sorry about the one-week no-report zone, I have only missed three reports in 6 years but I am in a transition time, job hunting, Christmas, mom visiting and football play-offs, just too much going on for the last couple of weeks. Anyway, no snow for us in Cabo, things did remain cool however and I felt like it was going to snow on a few mornings when the lows hit the mid 50’s. At least we warmed up to the high 70’s on those days. We did get a bit of cloud cover just at the beginning of this report but now at the end of the year the skies are clear and there is nothing appearing on the horizon.
WATER: On the Pacific side the water has been much warmer with 71-74 degree and fairly blue water. The warmer water at the end of this reporting time was closer to shore and between the San Jaime Bank and us and in a long plume running directly south of the bank. On the Cortez side the water was warm as far as east to the 1150 spot, but became much cooler, down to 67 degrees at the Cabrillo Seamount, cooler and much more green, almost a pea-soup green in places just to the east of the 1150 and along that small temperature break.
BAIT: Bait was mostly Mackerel these past couple of weeks but there were a few Caballito in the mix. These larger baits were the normal $2 per bait. Up in San Jose there were Sardinas available at $25 a scoop, but they were tiny ones with the biggest only 2 inches, better for chum that as bait.
FISHING:
BILLFISH: As we expected to happen, the Striped Marlin have started to move our way. The bait moved south and the Marlin followed. The bite is still very good at the Finger Bank but there was no need to go that far. At the end of this reporting period there was an excellent bite going on at the San Jaime Bank on fish in the 100-120 pound class with a lot of boats releasing up to 20 Marlin a day. There was great activity on the Golden Gate as well, but there were a few days right around Christmas when the fish moved off of the Bank and the boats really had to search hard to find them. As well as the Golden and the Jaime Banks, there are good concentrations of Striped Marlin appearing off of the points and ledges just off of the beach. With just a hint of wind there are good numbers of tailing fish to be found close to shore in the afternoon. Almost all these fish are feeding on small Mackerel and slow trolling or drifting with these live baits has resulted in the best catches. It is more exciting to run in to bait balls popping up to the surface, but it was not needed in order to catch fish. A few boats were not able or not interested in catching Marlin however and directed their attentions elsewhere, and reported a distinct lack of Marlin anywhere else. Boats going up toward the Vinorama and Punta Gorda area on the Cortez side reported very green water and only a couple of Marlin sighted.
YELLOWFIN TUNA Once again at the end of this reporting period the football size Yellowfin were reported appearing up outside of San Jose, but the bite was sporadic, the size of available Sardines apparently had a strong effect on the bite. There were fish in the 15-20 pound class reported from the south side of the San Jaime Banks mixed in with pods of Porpoise but the moved around fast. A few boats going north on the Pacific side toward the Finger Bank reported fish in the 80 pound class but they were scattered out and the boats had a difficult time getting bit on these fish.
DORADO: Once again there were a few Dorado found but for the most part these were small fish, less than 15 pounds. A few boats caught one or two fish, most boats had none. The fish that were caught were found in the warmer water on the Pacific side and were caught on live Mackerel with a couple coming on bright colored lures.
WAHOO: I saw no Wahoo flags this week that were for Wahoo, I did see quite a few that were flown for Sierra.
INSHORE: There was no change in the inshore report for this report period. Sierra were the fish of the week for the inshore fishermen and they were consistently on the feed off of the Solmar-Finesterra beach early in the morning. They seemed to move up to the north later in the day. Yellowtail continued to produce scattered action off of the rocky points on the Cortez side with some decent fish being taken off of Gray Rock and the drop at Chileno.
NOTES: There are whales out there so be careful early in the mornings. Quite a few Makos (small ones) have been seen and caught at the Golden Gate Bank, averaging 30 pounds. Santa was nice to me this year; I must have been a good boy. No complaints but I am looking for a new boat to captain. This report was written to a variety of music from my collection so I don’t get into a rut! Until next week, tight lines!

Well off to Alaska,the Nushagak river known for it's number's of fish foto is of Bob Shea of Chico California.As Bob fished for Kings 4 days and finally stopped at his 106th fish some as big as 40lber's.He also spent a day chasing Rainbow's and caught 50+ on a fly rod. WATER CONDITIONS: The Skeena is very low and in good shape. The Zymoetz (Copper) River is in good shape but ice is starting to form. The Kalum (upper and lower) River is in excellent shape. Kitimat River is low and clean.

SKEENA RIVER: The water is in good shape, low and clean. Should be a few Steelhead and Trout one can catch.
KALUM RIVER: The water, both upper and lower sections are in excellent shape and fishing for Steelhead is good.

ZYMOETZ (COPPER) RIVER: The water is in fair shape today and fishing for Steelhead is fair also. Of course this depends on the weather.

KITIMAT RIVER: Water conditions are not very good. At times the river is full of slush.
Christmas to me is a joyous time to spend with family and friends and celebrate all the tidings of the season. It is a time to exchange gifts, celebrate Christ and also to take the time to truly appreciate the people near and dear to our hearts.
In the fishing world it is also a time to reflect on special fishing trips during the past season and hope that next year brings more memorable moments. Attached are a couple of my personal special moments.

Report Description:
Capt Chris and I loaded up the International 50 TW's with hopes of bringing a Bluefin Tuna to the dock today. Didn't happen!!!
I only heard of two Bluefin's caught today and both were too short of the 73' limit to sell requirement. We started at the Raritan and worked our way to the Horseshoe. From there we went to the shoals and worked the edge to the knuckle buoy. From there we went to the East side, here we found a large school of trout, could not determine if they were grey or silver trout. If they were grey they were not legal size!! We talked about catching a few for dinner, but not being sure which they were, we didn't!!
This should have been a great place for the Tunas to be feeding. I mean there were a load of trout here, But I quess the Tunas didn't think the way I did.
I don't know if the one's that were here have left or if the approaching front may have had the bite shut off. I would say the front has them turned off right now and as soon as things stabilize a little better, the bite should resume as it was Tuesday and Wednesday.
But, then again, the bite at MHC today was reported to have been 'on fire'. The 'radio talk' was that there were 44 boats out up there and 44 boats were hooked up. Now remember, that was on the radio down here, If you are a fisherman, you know where I am going with this!!!!
Well, I didn't care that we didn't get a Bluefin Tuna today, sure I would love to have got one, it sure would help with the high fuel prices I am paying and not doing anything commercially!! But the reason I didn't care was because I got to spend an entire day in the boat with my son Captain Chris Foster.
Don't ever take the time you spend with your children for granted. I remember Capt Chris and I going everywhere and doing everything together all the time and then one day it was over. How could that happen so quickly? It's called life and sometimes it can be brutal and cruel.
Anyway, today it was Capt. Chris and I along with 'Admiral Bodie' the fish dog, and for a brief time today it was like 'old times' again. Wish it could happen more often, but I will Thank God for the times we can get together now, cherish every minute, and never take them for granted ever again!!!
Take a look at the big Red Drum we caught today. I out fished Capt Chris on the Reds today, but his was big enough for a NC Saltwater Citation and both of mine were just like the Tunas today, too short!!! Week Ending December 15th
The past two weeks has seen some good bass fishing in the Orlando area. Butler Chain we finally started spotting some bait fish pods, although small and scattered, they are showing up. We had several runs out on Butler and with cooler weather, the water temperatures were finally dropping into the 60’s. This will get the bass on the feeding frenzy to fatten them up for the spawn which is just around the corner.
Lakes Louise, Chase and Sheen had been the best lakes for us, and seen some good quality bass caught. Numbers are starting to increase as well as size, with some very limited schooling action early on in the day. Spinner baits, weighted fluke type baits and wacky rigged senko type baits have been producing pretty good. Drop offs have once again been key to catching out here. We had a few days were the shiner bite seemed to drop off, but we still managed to catch them on the old reliable wacky rig.
Johns Lake has also been producing very good for us. Early morning schooling activity has been very good, with a lot of schoolie sized bass being hooked up. Once the schooling action slows, working the grass beds has been key. Outside edges of the grasses has been producing some quality bass, with the bigger bass coming by tossing T-Rigged Gitem K.O’s and Shads into the grass beds and swimming them back out slowly. The smaller swim baits, mostly the WildEye Curl Tail from Storm has been picking up some good bass and keeping the action steady out here, one key is to locate off shore grass beds just below the surface, as the bass seem to be stacked up in these areas.
