It rained a little but not heavy. The main snow melt-off from the mountains has not started yet. We need warmer weather for that to happen. The water has been coming up slowly all week but is staying in fishable shape on most rivers. This is just what is needed to move in more Steelhead and Chinook (King) Salmon from the ocean. Conditions are near perfect on some rivers. The Kalum is clean and fishing good. The Zymoetz (Copper) is dirty and in turn is coloring up the Skeena into which it flows. The Kitimat River remains low but the Steelhead fishing is still pretty good. See the Ron Wakita report below for more detail. The Skeena River is borderline fishable and Steelhead are being caught along with some early Chinook fresh from the ocean. This is a good time of year to start doing some bar fishing before the river gets too high. Both fly and spin rods are working well. There is still time to book your trip in May for both Steelhead and Chinook, contact me anytime for available dates and all the fine details of who, what, where, when and why. When May comes around I cannot help but think of Chinook (King) Salmon on the Kalum River. Actually, this is the time, everything being normal, when you can catch both Steelhead and Chinook on the same day. I am sorry I cannot recall the name of the young fellow but we all had a great day of fishing for Chinook on the upper Kalum this time of year. It was a family and friends fishing day and I think everyone caught a fish. It doesn’t take long to get the young folk “hooked on fishing” with catches like this. The upper Kalum River is a non-retention fishery for BIG Chinook. One is allowed to keep a “Jack” which is a small fish under 65 cm up until May 24th. The truth is you don’t catch many small ones. I think this regulation, which has been in effect for many years now, has resulted in the returns of big fish being allowed to grow back to their historical numbers. KALUM RIVER: The water, both upper and lower sections are in excellent shape and fishing for Steelhead is very good…and the Chinook…are coming in also. This is a Classified River year round and can be guided from March 15 through October 15 only. The Steelhead record is 32-pounds. ZYMOETZ (COPPER) RIVER: The upper section is closed to fishing as of December 31 but the lower section below the first canyon will stay open for Steelheaders to enjoy. Water is dirty now. Fishing Report from: Nicholas Dean Lodge for the Week of April 27 to March 3/08 Hello Anglers, Warming temperatures combined with moderate amounts of rainfall have helped raise water levels in the Skeena and its tributaries. While the Skeena itself is high, dirty, and not easily fishable, some of its tributaries are, and fishing has generally been good over the last week. One of our long time repeat guests, Julian Smith, landed a white chrome 25 lb Chinook, and I’ve heard other reports of even more Chinook being landed. These fresh fish are aggressive and hold one of the greatest opportunities for hooking (but not necessarily landing!) Chinook on the fly during the fishing season. Steelhead fishing has been superb on a few different coastal rivers that we fish, though access can be a long, laborious task. A ride through the Ocean, timing of the tides and snow are all factors that must be considered, and it wasn’t until last week that we were able to fish some of these gems. However, the wait was very much worth the effort, as guests Martin Walker and Ron Mallory hooked 9 Steelhead in one day and Jeff Bright and Julian Smith hooked 11 Steelhead another day. Jeff Bright has called this time frame “Adventure Steelheading,” which I think is a very suitable name, both for the fish available and the wild spaces they are pursued in… Jeff Bright jeffbright.com drifts and swings his fly through a bouldery pocket on a remote coastal stream. Though hiking and trudging your way through snow and rocks is almost always a given, the rewards are usually well worth the effort. After carefully working through a prime run, Jeff Bright jeffbright.com connected with this gorgeous Steelhead. These fish are chrome, fresh from the Ocean, and 'mean.' The Salmon fry hatch appears to be in full swing now, and all trout species, including Cutthroat, Rainbow, Bulls, and Dolly Varden have been taking advantage of these easy meals. Stripping and swinging fry patterns on a dry line can be a very effective strategy and accounted for several trout yesterday for Dustin. With Spring Chinook fishing well underway, we are also looking forward to our Trophy Chinook season on the Kitimat and Skeena, from June through late July. This is the time period when, arguably, the largest Chinook in the world ascend these great rivers. If you’ve ever wanted to try landing Salmon that are almost always in control of the fight, fish so large that all they have to do is turn broadside in the current to make your reel scream, this is a season for you. Warmer temperatures and superb fishing make this a popular season, and spaces during prime periods do tend to book quickly. CURRENT REPORT and summary for Northern Coastal Rivers: Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters KITIMAT RIVER: The lower Kitimat River produced some fresh bright females earlier this week. Aubrey Gerstel from Chetwind who has been fishing the Kitimat Hatchery run most of this week witnessed nine steelhead hooked on Wednesday April 30th with five landed. Four of these were bright females. Aubrey landed two Steelhead on Thursday and exercised his option to retain a hatchery Steelhead. Regulations allow one hatchery steelhead per day may be harvested on the Kitimat River. Once an angler harvests a hatchery steelhead on the Kitimat River he or she must immediately record the steelhead on the back of their fishing license and 'can no longer fish those waters for the remainder of that day'. In simple terms, once you keep a hatchery steelhead you must stop fishing the Kitimat River for the rest of the day. I drifted on Saturday with Ron Egan and Richard Vello. We hooked seven Steelhead and landed four. Two of these fish were pretty bright, two were a bit colored and one was a kelt (spawned out). The other two we didn't get a good look at. It is typical for this time of year to catch Steelhead in the various colours and stages of the spawning migration. There were two Chinook caught in the lower Kitimat River this week, one at the Pump House pool. This is a unique time of year when Steelhead and Chinook can be caught on the Kitimat River at the same time. I think when I am finished this fishing report I am going to take my spey rod and join Aubrey down at the Hatchery Run. DOUGLAS CHANNEL: Most boaters are crabbing and bottom fishing. Not much has been reported from the Douglas Channel this week. Harbour fishing for Chinook will start very soon. CURRENT REPORT and summary for Northern Coastal Rivers: Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters KITIMAT RIVER: SAFETY FIRST: Drift boaters are cautioned about the log jam above the Power Lines. It is possible to portage around the log jam but it is somewhat tricky. Smart money says to beach the boat upstream and walk down and take a good look to chart the path first. The Kitimat River earlier this week dropped to exceptionally low levels. Despite the tougher fishing conditions caused by the low clean water there were some big steelhead caught. There were six steelhead reported this past week which were twenty pounds plus including the steelhead included in this report. This steelhead was landed by Dave from Smithers last Sunday. I guided Dave when he hooked this beauty. When Dave first set the hook and saw the tail come out of the water we thought that it may have been a Chinook. This was the largest Steelhead that Dave has landed. Congratulations Dave! The Kitimat River this year has produced bigger than average Steelhead than I have seen in a long time. Vince from the Kitimat Hatchery also has observed similar results. Vince also comments that the brood collection team has caught mostly males with females yet to come. We had some rain on Thursday which caused more Steelhead to move up river. Brian Boudreau and Brian Apps drifted Thursday and hooked seven Steelhead on their drift. Congratulations to Brian and Brian. It has started to rain as I am writing this report on Saturday and the forecast is for more rain for this weekend. With the rise in the river level should bring more Steelhead into the Kitimat River particularly some females. Stay Tuned! Tight Lines! DOUGLAS CHANNEL: Pat Oliver and Clayton Harker went down the Douglas Channel and managed to catch a small halibut and a bunch of crab. Other boaters were heading out for the weekend and were not returning until Sunday evening. Most were fishing for halibut and crab which is typical for this time of year. And the water is up – but still clean…yahoo! I guess I can say it now…conditions are near perfect. The guiding clients have been doing very well especially those who book multiple days. Multiple days mean they get to experience different rivers, pools and runs. I was tempted to move the fishing gauge from good to excellent. The Zymoetz (Copper) is clean and fishing on the low end is good. The Kalum is very clean and fishing is very good. With a “bump” of water the Kitimat River is fishing well for Steelhead. See the Ron Wakita report below for more detail. The Skeena River is clean and Steelhead are being caught. Don’t spread this rumor but we have already caught our first Chinook (King) Salmon on the Kalum River this year. It happened on April 3rd. Sky Richard was the lucky angler. Soon, we may be able to catch both Steelhead and Chinook on the same day. Now that experience will change your life. I know, it changed mine back in 1980. I have a report of guiding clients “just about” landing a Steelhead on the Kalum River that was estimated to weigh over 25-pounds. It got away before they could get the photo. I also have a report from my friend Rob Vodola who was fishing with a friend on the Kitimat River after work for a couple of hours and hooked-up with a couple of very fresh Steelhead just in from the ocean. Rob landed his fish a big wild male estimated to weigh over 20-pounds…plus. He said it was the most beautiful Steelhead he had seen this year. The Kalum (upper and lower) River is in good shape and has come up about one foot since last week. Kitimat River is very low and clean and is starting to come up a bit also. The water has come up so it is much safer for boating. April 18, 2008 Chad Black and I had an opportunity to fish together for a few hours on the Kalum River. Chad's favorite way to fish is with his Spey fly rod. He is a pro fly caster. It didn't take him very long to catch his Steelhead (see: Photo of the Week) and what a fresh fish it was, bright and clean. It must have just come in from the ocean this spring. I managed to shoot some video and still shots. Did I say, I caught a Steelhead also. I caught mine spinning with a light silver spoon. Chad shot some video and stills also with his camera…so check back early next week when I will have had a chance to edit and post it on the website. We also caught Cutthroat and Dolly Varden Char. It was just a GREAT day fishing. Both our fish were females Chad’s estimated to weigh 10-12 and mine 12-14-pounds. Chad gave me some very good Spey Fly Fishing Tips and Techniques on video (soon to be posted)…stay tuned…it is only going to get better. This is a Classified River year round and can be guided from March 15 through October 15 only. The Steelhead record is 32-pounds. ZYMOETZ (COPPER) RIVER: The upper section is closed to fishing as of December 31 but the lower section below the first canyon will stay open for Steelheaders to enjoy. Water is clean now and the fishing is pretty good. Fishing Report from: Nicholas Dean Lodge for the Week of April 13 to April 19/08 Hello Anglers, The prevailing low, clear water conditions on the Skeena and its tributaries changed last week as rainfall and snowmelt inundated rivers. Though the Skeena has a little more colour to it, it has been fishing well during the past week, and some very fresh Steelhead have been caught there. Other rivers have redeveloped their natural glacial colour, which Steelhead seem to feel more at home in. Though the fishing has been a little spottier than in previous weeks, the Steelhead are still in the rivers in good numbers, and the game is more about finding aggressive fish. Guests at the lodge last week hooked into several Steelhead on the fly, ranging from large bucks with prominent red stripes, to white chrome fish with a hint of pink in their cheeks. Another group of Italian anglers who were guided by Greg and Dustin experienced some great fishing on light spoons cast to deep, swirly pools. The next week is forecast to be a warm sunny one, which will hopefully continue to melt snow and raise river levels. An increase in water levels will no doubt bring more fresh fish into the Skeena system which, as water temperatures rise, will be very strong fighters. And perhaps most striking, the warmer weather will allow us to access some of our favourite remote coastal Steelhead rivers. These are creeks and small rivers where 20 lb Steelhead can be sight fished as they hold behind large boulders in clear water. CURRENT REPORT and summary for Northern Coastal Rivers: Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters KITIMAT RIVER: Anyone drifting the Kitimat River please beware of the log jam above Powerlines! The Kitimat River water level went up earlier this week due to some rain we had last weekend. With the rise in the water the Steelhead catch rates were pretty good earlier in the week through out the river particularly in the upper end. The higher water levels encouraged more Steelhead into the river and also caused more Steelhead to migrate up river. I managed to land one on Sunday and another on Monday evening. Tuesday evening after work I was fishing with Francis Timmons from Quebec and he managed to land another one in the upper river. Pat Oliver also landed one about 18lbs. on Wednesday up river. Many other Steelhead anglers reported good success as well. After the rain stopped and with continuing colder temperatures the river has dropped steadily during the latter part of this week and the catch rates have dropped off in the upper river. The lower cleaner water level has created more challenging conditions although Randy Marshall of Randy's River Guiding reported landing a 12lber with his client on Saturday. There seems to be more Steelhead holding in the lower drift and the wider deeper Steelhead runs in the lower portion of the Kitimat has produced more fish. One drift boat has reported hooking five Steelhead landing three in the lower drift on Friday. We have some higher than average tides in the next few days which should help bring some fresh Steelhead into the Kitimat. I suspect that the higher tides will bring more fresh Steelhead into the Kitimat River but the lower river level will cause them to hold in the lower portion. To test this theory I plan to drift the lower portion tomorrow morning. Stay tuned! DOUGLAS CHANNEL: We have experienced some high winds in the Douglas Channel which has caused little to no activity. Accordingly not much to report from the Douglas Channel. I never thought I would say I hope it rains but we really do need something to get the water levels up. I had a good look at the rivers and it appears they have started to come up. The Zymoetz (Copper) actually got dirty, not surprising for this river. I guess if we had a streak of hot weather that would do it and down will come the snow pack from the mountains. Savvy fishermen and fishing guides have figured out how to keep the bite going for Steelhead despite the low water conditions. Speaking of savvy guides check out a report from host Jeff Bright and guide Dustin Kovacvich below: Jeff says, “I'm happy to come to you with a glowing report from my first visit to the Skeena and Nicholas Dean Lodge this year. Guest Martin Walker and I found near-perfect conditions and good numbers of willing fish, including one heavy buck that taped out to 22-23 pounds. Fishing Report from: Nicholas Dean Lodge for the Week of April 6 to April 12/08 Hello Anglers, It seems as though we’re finally starting to receive some of the rains more commonly associated with the early Spring season. Though it might make the fishing experience a little wetter and colder, the change in conditions is a positive one for waking up lethargic fish and bringing in fresh “chromers” from the large waters of the Skeena. The fishing for the guests at our lodge during the past week has also reflected this. On their first day of fishing, Mike Kenyon and Yvonne Williams had a fantastic outing – all in all, hooking several Steelhead on the fly. See Photo of the Week. Perhaps even more significant, the last pool of the day actually surrendered two Steelhead – at the same time! Double headers are one of those rare feats in Steelhead fly fishing that simply don’t happen very often, and I’m sure that Mike and Yvonne will remember this day for a long time to come. For those of you who might remember, Yvonne was the lucky angler to have hooked and landed the largest Steelhead seen at the lodge last year. The fish was conservatively estimated at 27-28 lbs, a monstrous fish. For Yvonne, there was another fish that “got away” this year, having wrapped her line and leader around a large midstream log, a fish so large she figured it was similar in size to last year’s fish. CURRENT REPORT and summary for Northern Coastal Rivers: Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters KITIMAT RIVER: With the weather staying colder the Kitimat River remained very low. Some anglers commented that we needed a little rain to bump the river level up to encourage more Steelhead into the river. We received snow Friday morning and it changed to rain and has rained well into Saturday. The river is looking good with the higher water and more Steelhead should be migrating up the river. Al Skender and his fishing partner hooked three Steelhead Thursday morning landing two. Ariel Kuppers landed a 16lb. Steelhead Saturday morning. He also landed a pretty nice Dolly Varden. Many other steelhead have been reported. Driftboaters are cautioned about the log jam above Powerlines. Mike Herzberz who took the picture of the log jam (included with this report) comments that 'it would be very difficult to portage around the log jam'. Thanks Mike. Good Luck! Tight Lines! I guess spring has finally arrived. The water on all the rivers is still extremely low. The Steelhead fishing is very slow on some of the rivers and fair to good on others. The trick now is to know where the Steelhead are holding and adjust your terminal tackle accordingly (small) and fish un-spooked water. And if you hook a fish…rest the pool. I guess a bonus is that the fishing pressure is light. The lower Zymoetz (Copper) River is still holding a few Steelhead and a few fresh ones are coming in now. A few fishermen are starting to fish on the main stem Skeena River looking for that spring run Steelhead. In the meantime lots of Cutthroat and Dolly Varden Char to keep the fishermen entertained while waiting for Steelhead. I went fishing with a couple of friends today on the Kalum River, check out my report below. The Kalum (upper and lower) River is in good shape. Kitimat River is very low and clean. KALUM RIVER: The water, both upper and lower sections are in excellent shape and fishing for Steelhead is good. The water is very low, so one must be very careful if using a boat. I have heard of one jet-boat smashing the bottom pretty good in a shallow rocky tail-out. - April 6, 2008. Hugh Ormerod, Rod Vodola and I went fishing on the Kalum today. We were the only boat on the river. The water is very, very low and we could only fish one good pool. That pool was kind to us as we each landed a Steelhead. Mine was a big male in very good shape around 17-20-pounds. Rob’s fish was a bright female around 16-pounds. Hugh’s fish was a small male around 5-pounds. We hooked at least six Steelhead and landed three in a very short day. We started at 9 AM and finished at noon. We also hooked a few Cutthroat Trout and Dolly Varden. So the action was good considering the conditions. I shot a video clip of Rob’s fish and will edit and post it on the website soon. I also got some great still photos. This is the lowest water level (for this time of year) I have ever seen on the Kalum in all the years I have been fishing it. The water is usually at least three to four feet higher and a dark green colour. Oh well, nothing we can do about conditions, just adjust to them. This is a Classified River year round and can be guided from March 15 through October 15 only. The Steelhead record is 32-pounds. ZYMOETZ (COPPER) RIVER: The upper section is closed to fishing as of December 31 but the lower section below the first canyon will stay open for Steelheaders to enjoy. Fishing there has been good. AREA RIVER RECORDS: Chinook Salmon: Skeena River, 92.5-pounds; Kalum River, 85-pounds; Kitimat River, 74-pounds; Steelhead: Skeena River, 45-pounds; Coho Salmon: Skeena River, 27-pounds. Fishing Report from: Nicholas Dean Lodge for the Week of March 30 to April 5/08 Hello Anglers, We’ve been very fortunate to have some great weather during the last few weeks, but the downside is that rivers have become very low and clear, making fishing a little more difficult. In many places on the Skeena and its tributaries, it is now possible to wade in tail outs and riffles that you wouldn’t think of trying in normal conditions. Still, more fresh fish are arriving weekly to complement the Summer, Fall and Winter run fish, and when the prevailing conditions change – either a little more colour in the rivers, or higher flows, or both – the fishing will follow suit. Despite the conditions, it was a great weekend to get out fishing and a friend and I spent the weekend swinging large flies on sink tips in some fantastic water, all the while practicing our casting. Doing a little recon when the water is low will also help you understand where the lies are and why, which will invariably help later on… We were also pleasantly surprised to run into Noel, Rob and Hugh on the river this morning and it was great to hear that they had run into a few nice Steelhead. I have to say that I was a little envious, but realize that I just have to pay my dues, and wait for the next pull. Fishing Report from: Kalum River Lodge for the Week of March 30 to April 5/08 Hey everyone how’s it going? Me and Andrew did a 1/2 day drift on the upper Kalum River today (April 2nd) and hooked 5, but only landed 2. Water is clear, cold, but the fish fight like %^$^! Great water to get them on the fly! Tony CURRENT REPORT and summary for Northern Coastal Rivers: Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters KITIMAT RIVER: Spring is here but the reminders of the unusually harsh winter that we had are still apparent. The mornings still have a bite of cold with the odd morning still producing some frost on the ground. The enormous snow pack on the mountains is a constant reminder of the amount of snow we received this winter. The temperature of the next few months and accordingly, the rate of snow melt will have a major influence on the fishing conditions that we will have to deal with. Early in this year's Steelhead season with the temperature staying colder than normal, the Kitimat River has stayed very low and clear. The low river conditions have slowed the migration of fish into the river and most of the steelhead that have been reported are in the lower river. There were three steelhead landed on the Island across from the hatchery and the Lower Dike has produced both Steelhead and some trout this weekend. Steelhead are reported to be spotty in the upper river by most anglers but two fly fishers said they had an outstanding day on Thursday. John said 'with the low clear water the steelhead were pretty spooky but were able to do really good swinging a fly'. DOUGLAS CHANNEL: There were some herring reported in the harbour this week but only for a short time. A twenty pound Chinook was reported caught trolling in front of Eurocan on Wednesday but we still have not spoken to the lucky boater. Crab and halibut are also the focus of boaters. Tidal water anglers are again reminded to be aware of the changes to the halibut quotas. We did manage to hook three Steelhead and land two, one dark spawned out (kelt) female about 8-pounds and one dark male about 4-pounds…which is well below the average size for this river. The low, extremely clean water and the bright sunny day may have had something to do with the slow action. The fish had to be very spooky. Anyway, we still had a lot of fun. Fishing Report from: Nicholas Dean Lodge for the Week of March 23 to March 29/08 Spey fishing is a popular method in fishing the Skeena and its tributaries. In addition to being an incredibly effective tool for covering water, Spey casting is just plain good fun. Katy Sexton Photo Hello Anglers, Our 2008 Spring Steelhead season has started off incredibly well, with a strong showing of some very big fish on the Skeena and its tributaries. Guests Jeff Bright and Martin Walker have had the lodge to themselves over the last week, and have ventured out with their Spey rods in tow to swing flies for some of the largest Steelhead around. Being the keen anglers they are, they wanted to fish the same afternoon they arrived in Terrace, and after only a few hours of fishing, Jeff landed a 14 lb Steelhead on one of his artistic patterns. And from that day on, their fishing only improved. Last year, Martin had somewhat of a discouraging start to the Spring, with only a few fish in a week’s fishing. This year has been a different story though. Martin has landed over 10 Steelhead, with most of the fish being in the 10 to 18 lb range. He even landed one very large buck that was 39 inches long and had a 22 inch girth – between 21 and 23 lbs according to Sturdy’s formula. It could be argued that for all good things you have to pay your dues. CURRENT REPORT and summary for Northern Coastal Rivers: Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters KITIMAT RIVER: Spring is here but this week only during the afternoons. We experienced warm, sunny weather in the afternoon but in the mornings it has either snowed or remained frosty cold. Only in the North West can we get all four seasons in the same day. The effect of this erratic weather on the river conditions is that the river is staying very low and clean. The Trout fishery continues to be very spotty this year but there have a few reports of Steelhead. Jody Dennil's nephew caught a small Steelhead (6 lbs.) while they were fishing for trout. One of our staff in our tackle store, Jesse Houston caught about a 10lb. steelhead in the lower river. The Kitimat hatchery staff reported landing a Steelhead while they were collecting brood stock for Cutthroat. DOUGLAS CHANNEL: The better weather conditions has been enticing more boaters to get out fishing but the Winter Chinook fishery continues to be very spotty. Most boaters are de- winterizing their boats and getting organized for the fishing season. Crabbing seems to be the focus right now and should evolve to bottom fishing. Anglers are reminded to review new regulations especially halibut catch limits. BOAT RAMPS: The Kalum River boat launch in Fishermen’s park near town is closed for now as repairs are being done. The ramp on the other side (Kitsumkalum First Nations) is open. Please be very careful waking on this ice. The Kalum (upper and lower) River is in good shape. Kitimat River is low and clean. KALUM RIVER: The water, both upper and lower sections are in excellent shape and fishing for Steelhead is good. The water is very low, so one must be very careful if using a boat. March 18, 2008 I went fishing with my friends Rob and Brent on the upper Kalum. We noticed on arrival at the boat ramp the water had dropped even lower than it was the last time we were out. This limited the number of pools we could access to fish. It did not matter as we fished for only a half a day. Last time out Rob and I hooked seven Steelhead but it was slow this time, we hooked only two. Out of those two Brent landed a dark Male that weighed around 10-pounds. The Kalum River gives up a mix bag of Steelhead this time of year some have just come in and some have been wintering over. This male probably has been wintering over looking for a bright female! I have been asked about the landing net Rob and I use many times. It is called the Rushton Landing Net and is oblong in shape specifically designed to hold a fish in deeper water for a more gentle “catch and release”. The “mesh” is very soft. Using the net keeps the fish off of the rocks (shore line) which may damage the fish if it “flops” around. Using the net is less stressful on the fish as it keeps the fish in the water so that it can breathe. Hope they had some luck. This is a Classified River year round and can be guided from March 15 through October 15 only. The Steelhead record is 32-pounds. ZYMOETZ (COPPER) RIVER: The upper section is closed to fishing as of December 31 but the lower section below the first canyon will stay open for Steelheaders to enjoy. Fishing there has been good, now that the ice is gone. AREA RIVER RECORDS: Chinook Salmon: Skeena River, 92.5-pounds; Kalum River, 85-pounds; Kitimat River, 74-pounds; Steelhead: Skeena River, 45-pounds; Coho Salmon: Skeena River, 27-pounds.
