Ocean Winter Chinook and Crab

The photo of the week shows me with a beautiful, bright Douglas Channel Winter Chinook landed on Saturday, January 16, 2010. The fish weighed 20-pounds. I was fishing with Ron Wakita and Wes Owens. We also caught a few Dungeness Crab. Click here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zr0yHthttQ to watch the 6 minute video clip. More information about this trip below:

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated January 10 – January 17, 2010

Dear Fishing Friends:

SUMMARY: Temperatures have been above average all week, plenty warm enough to get out fishing both river and ocean. The upper end of the Zymoetz (Copper) River is closed to angling (as of December 31, 2009) to protect the “wintering over” wild Steelhead. To be clear just the upper reaches of the river are closed but one still may angle on the very low end, just make sure you fish below the boundary at the first canyon. The Kalum River is open to angling all winter although access to some pools is difficult because of the very low water and snow. The Kitimat River is open all winter and if we get some warmer weather fishing for Trout should be OK. Winter Chinook fishing in the Kitimat Harbour and Douglas Channel is good right now but is weather dependent. Winter Chinook fishing in Prince Rupert is very good. Lake ice fishing is also good. Please be very careful on the ice, with the warmer weather there may be some weak spots.

Check out the video clip from Saturday, Jan. 16th below:

I fished with Ron Wakita and Wes Owens for Winter Chinook and Dungeness Crab in the Douglas Channel on Saturday, January 16, 2010. The weather was perfect and seas were almost flat calm. We had a great day landing five Chinook and a few Crab. The biggest Chinook weighed 20-pounds. Rods and reels were Shimano. Electric downrigger and rod holders were made by Scotty www.scotty.com Crab Traps distributed by Redl Sports www.redlsports.com Ace Line Hauler www.acelinehauler.com to effortlessly pull the traps, Danielson Bait cage (basket) and a Gibbs-Delta Tool Gauge www.gibbsfishing.com to measure the Crabs. The lead core rope used to pull the traps is made by Danielson. We placed five traps and caught a few Crabs in only one set. For a direct link to the video click here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zr0yHthttQ

Let's have some fun with the 2009 Photos of the Week! Send me an e-mail to vote for your favorite one. I will let you know by the end of January 2010 which photo receives the most votes. Looking forward to hearing from you. Thank you to the folks who have sent their votes already. KEEP THOSE VOTES COMING.

Don’t miss the opportunity to be guided for Steelhead on the Kalum River the last two weeks in March 2010. Season opener begins March 15th. Please contact me for details. Limited spots available!

Many people book three trips per year to our area; one trip in the spring (March-April-May), one trip in the summer (June-July-August) and one trip in the fall (September-October-November). They love having the same guide but fishing for different fish in different areas.

Be sure to check out my website at www.noelgyger.ca for news bulletins, mid week fishing updates, conservation, my history, quality waters strategy, special guided fishing trips, video clips, podcasts, scenic river photos, wildlife photos and others, comments from past guests, informational articles, archived fishing reports from 1996 through 2002 and a sportfishing market place. I hope it meets with your entire satisfaction. I am at your service.

LARGEST FISH OF THE WEEK: River: none reported this week. Ocean: 20-pounder by Noel Gyger. Lake: lots of Trout being caught in lakes while ice fishing.

WEATHER: Flurries changing to rain showers this afternoon. Snowfall amount 2 to 4 cm. Becoming windy this afternoon. High plus 2. Sunrise 8:46 AM Sunset 4:44 PM. Today’s yearly average temperatures: Maximum -1 degrees. Minimum - 6 degrees.

SKEENA RIVER: The Skeena River is frozen over in places. The places that are not frozen are filled with flowing ice. The graph below demonstrates these ice flows have jammed and caused the river to rise. Fishing is nearly impossible under these conditions. Please be careful walking on the ice.

Skeena River height: http://scitech.pyr.ec.gc.ca/waterweb/fullgraph.asp

KALUM RIVER: Since the weather has warmed up more anglers are heading out to try their luck fishing for Steelhead. Anglers are reminded of a bait ban January 1 to March 15.

ZYMOETZ (COPPER) RIVER: Sorry, I haven’t checked the water conditions today but I think they would be OK now with the warmer weather. The upper section is closed as of December 31 but the lower section below the first canyon will stay open for the winter Steelheaders to enjoy.

KITIMAT RIVER: We received milder temperatures and some heavy rain during the early part of this week. The rain caused the Kitimat River levels to rise and by mid week the river was dirty and unfishable. The higher river levels and milder temperatures also melted and /or flushed a lot of the snow and ice on the Kitimat River and opened up the most main channels of the Kitimat River. By Thursday and Friday the rain stopped and river levels dropped. The water cleaned and is now fishable. A few Trout fishermen were able to get out and catch some Trout.

Jan 15 Mike Campbell was out fishing the upper Kitimat River and landed 2 Cutthroat Trout and lost something big that he thought might have been a Steelhead. As Mike experienced there is a small winter population of Steelhead in the Kitimat River albeit very small. It is always a welcome surprise for any Trout angler to hook a Steelhead on Trout gear.

Summary: The Kitimat River will be productive for Trout but as always, depending on the weather.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: The weather this weekend was perfect to do some Winter Chinook fishing in the harbour, crabbing or just boating on the Douglas Channel. Many boaters who keep their boats in the water over the winter like to enjoy time on the Douglas Channel. It is also a good idea to run the boats to charge up the batteries and circulate the fluids to ensure everything is in Tip Top shape.

Jan 14 Wes Owens was out doing some Crabbing and dropped a line for a couple of hours and lost a feeder Chinook. He did manage to get 6 Crab for his friend John.

Jan 16 I had the pleasure of fishing with my good friends, Noel Gyger and Wes Owens. We had an awesome day fishing for 'Winter Chinook' in the Kitimat Harbour. Wes and I started off our fishing trip by being pleasantly surprised to receive a wonderful assortment of baking from Noel's wife, Gail. Thank you Gail, they were delicious and they may have provided the inspiration for some good fishing. We landed five Winter Chinook in total but we released one.

The first two Chinook were landed using Gibbs UV Green Strip Highliner Flasher and a purple True Roll. This has been the bright star of our Winter Chinook fishing so far.

The next 3 Chinook were landed on Wes' favorite rig. It includes a Luhr Jensen Abe and Al #1 Flasher with an Anchovy in a Rhys Davis metallic blue/green Anchovy Teaser head. Noel landed a beautiful 20lb Winter Chinook on one of these rigs. Congratulations Noel. The Crabbing was slow although we did catch a few for Noel to take home to Gail who enjoys Dungeness Crab.

It was a great day fishing with Wes and Noel, we caught a few Winter Chinook, told a few fishing stories, ate some of Gail’s delicious baked goods and caught some Dungeness Crab. Thanks for the wonderful memories Noel and Wes.

Jan 12 Ariel Kuppers went fishing up to Ross Lake with his girlfriend Nicolette, his sister Emma and his buddy Travis. They hooked a few Brook Trout but only managed to land two. 'One was 3lbs' said Ariel. 'The other was smaller but we had quite the adventure to get two Trout'.

Thanks to everyone for providing pictures and info for this report.

Good Health and Good Fishing!

Sincerely
Ron

Fishing Report from: Chad Black of Nicholas Dean Lodge, Terrace BC

Starting in January and building through March, fresh Steelhead like this mint bright hen enter the Skeena River and its tributaries. These fish are amongst the largest of the year and with warming water temperatures can be incredible fighters...

Hello Anglers, First off, I'd like to wish you all a Happy New Year and hope that you had an enjoyable holiday season this year with your family and friends!

You know, I've been told by a few people that I might have chosen the worst couple of years to pick up and move to northwest BC, at least by Winter Steelhead fishing standards. Both this Winter 2010 and the Winter of 2009 have certainly been challenging in the sense that fishing conditions have been less than ideal. Starting in mid-November this past year, the weather was, for lack of a better phrase, just plain bad. Very cold (down to -20C was common) temperatures, and winds consistently in the gale force range are two very tough opponents when trying to spend quality time on the river, and a few fishing buddies have said that this lasted all through the holidays.
So, upon my arrival back in Skeena Steelhead country late last week, instead of finding the Kalum, Copper and Skeena Rivers in fishable shape, I unfortunately found the opposite: rivers mostly frozen over and little in the way of fishing opportunity. Or, so I thought. I'd based my observations on driving over the local bridges, and hadn't gone that extra step at checking in at my favourite pools. Jeff Langley and Sky Richard had, and said that the rivers were very much fishable if you did some hiking, though there were still sections frozen over. Apparently Sky has done quite well trout fishing on a few rivers in the area and had managed to land a few Steelhead as well. I suppose the moral of the story is always do your 'due diligence...'

For the past few days, I'm happy to report that temperatures have risen and steady rains have helped to melt shelf ice and open up our best Winter Steelhead fisheries. With rivers on the rise and the fact that there is generally a strong push of Winter Steelhead into the Lower Skeena and its tributaries at this time of year, I'm optimistic for my chances on the weekend...

With the start of the new year underway, and to help give our readers information and direction on the best techniques, tackle and presentations when targeting Salmon and Steelhead on the Skeena and its tributaries, I've also decided to add a new section to our fishing reports, titled: 'Skeena River Fishing Tips.' Whether you're a spey caster who loves swinging large Intruder flies for Steelhead or a trophy Chinook angler after the leviathans of the deep, there will be something for you to enjoy which just might help you land that next big fish you've been dreaming about. This week's tip is on the Hawaiian Punch fly, a popular and venerable pattern that has helped our guides and guests get into many, many Steelhead and Salmon here on the Skeena.

All the best for a successful and enjoyable year ahead and, as always,
Tight lines and screaming reels. Chad Black, Operations Manager

Fishing Report from: J & E Tackle Shop, Prince Rupert BC

Ray Hascarl and his son Dylan holding a 74lb. Chinook Salmon caught 30th of June out off the north end of Dundas Island.

The high winds and pounding rain continuing to be a problem for the majority of the winter anglers. For the few hard core fishermen that do take to the water, they are on the most part still being rewarded for their efforts. There has been a number of Winter Chinook reported being caught off the waters of Port Simpson ranging in size from 5 to 25lbs.

Ray and his son Dylan are long time friends of mine which have been coming to Prince Rupert from their hometown of Nakusp BC. for the past 6 to 7 years. They always stop in to J & E’s Tackle to gear up and get the latest up to date fishing report before heading out on the water. Here is their story of the BIG ONE that didn’t get away.

We caught it around 7:15pm and were one of the last boats on the water that evening so we had lots of room to fight it. We fought it for about 40 minutes with me on the rod, my son Dylan running the boat and brother Dean doing the netting. Once it was in the net I reached down and grabbed the gill plates and steered the head of the fish into the side of the boat as it was trying to swim through the net. It thrashed around for about a minute straight before I could pull it over the side. One note is we fished from 4:30 that morning all day while only catching one other fish around 5 lbs. It would have been my worst days ever fishing the ocean and then I caught the big one and made it one of the best days ever. We were supposed to be in at Dundas 101 at 6pm to eat dinner but my watch quit working that day so I was using my cell phone and the time on it was 1 hour behind because of Alaska time. Had my watch not quit, we would have been at supper and not even fishing when I caught it. Funny how things work out.
Just a reminder to all those Halibut sport fishermen that the month of January is closed to Halibut fishing.

Fishing Report from: Fish Tales Tackle Shop, Terrace BC

Good Day Noel! Well, Jack Frost has loosened his grip on us. The warmer weather has put the anglers in the mood. There are a few Steelhead being caught but as reported to me “You have to put the work in”. There also has been some reports of good trout fishing on the Kitimat. Sorry Noel, no monsters to report this week! Been pretty quiet. Have a super day!

Cheers, Jason Munday

Fishing Report from: Cory Koenig of Webflyz, Smithers BC

Cory is taking custom fly orders now www.webflyz.com

Highest Quality, Durable, and Competitively Priced Flies for any Species!

Hi Noel, here is what you asked for, not much fishing 'round here, but there is still die-hards!

This warm weather reminds a person in the Bulkley Valley of SPRING in January! All roads leading to any lake are very icy, and caution is to be taken for all your fishing trips in January.

Ice fishing is still your best bet, emphasis is on the lakes close to Smithers and Houston. Chapman, Babine, Fulton Lakes are great for Char up to 12 lbs. Ross, Call, Barrett, Klinger Lakes all support Rainbows, Brookies, or both up to 8lbs, with an average of 1-2lbs. The staff at Oscars Source for Sports reported that this week many anglers had really good success at Klinger Lake for brook trout. Irrigation, Johnson, Helen and Lake Kathlyn support CUTTHROAT TROUT and some CUTTBOWS up to 3 lbs.

There are some larger, older Char in the lakes in the rear of Houston B.C. at the top of the Fraser River watershed, close to Francios Lake, but a full day is needed. Gummy Minnows are a hit, used for any species, any time of year. Use sizes #6 to #1 for trout, and #4/0 for large lakers.

Meat and tater flies are still the conehead black and olive leeches, pheasant tail nymphs, and flash helps for these flies, as the lakes are most often dark!

Lyman lures www.lymanlures.com are a hit for any fishing, and Pink Deadly Dicks have brought many large trout to the ice over the years.

The use of the moon phases may help you, fish the 26th to the 29th of January for some of the better times to catch fish this month.

Any of these flies can be custom made for your specific fishing situation. Contact Cory at WEBFLYZ B.C. www.webflyz.com for more ice-fishing flies that work.

Check newly added fly photos weekly…or if you are planning a trip to hotter destinations this winter, check out WEBFLYZ B.C. website for flies that catch any species in the saltwater, even Marlin!

Check your 2009-2011 Freshwater fishing Regulations synopsis for all details concerning Lakes in Region 6.

Good luck everyone. Yours sincerely, Cory Koenig

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated December 20 – December 27, 2009

Dear Fishing Friends:

Happy New Year everyone!

SUMMARY: Sunny and windy with high of minus 2. Winter Steelheading is in full swing although the cold weather has slowed it down a bit. Sometimes it only means shorter fishing days but the “determined” fishermen are still getting out there. Some would say they’re “crazy”! The Zymoetz (Copper) River closes to angling above the sign at the transmission line crossing (below Zymoetz Canyon) at the end of the month (January 1 to June 15). So get out and enjoy before the closure. To be clear just the upper reaches of the river are closed one still may angle on the very low end, just make sure you fish below the boundary at the first canyon. The Kalum River is open to angling all winter although access to some pools is difficult as to the extreme low water and snow. The Kitimat River is open all winter also, and if we get some warmer weather fishing for Trout should be OK. The Blue Knuckle Derby is taking place in Prince Rupert today. I understand all tickets for this exciting event have been sold out since December 26th. Winter Chinook ocean fishing in Prince Rupert is very good. Check out the Jeff Carlson of J&E Tackle below for more detail.

CURRENT REPORT and summary for Skeena and Tributaries:

TYPE OF FISH CAUGHT: Steelhead, Trout and Dolly Varden Char for river. Salmon, Halibut, Bottom Fish and Dungeness Crab for ocean.

FISHING THIS WEEK: FAIR

WEATHER: Sunny. Windy. High minus 2. Wind chill minus 15 this morning. Sunrise 8:57 AM Sunset 4:15 PM. Today’s yearly average temperatures: Maximum -1 degrees. Minimum - 6 degrees.

WEATHER REPORTS VIA TELEPHONE: Terrace 250-635-4192 Kitimat 250-632-7864 Prince Rupert 250-627-1155 Smithers 250-847-1958.

SKEENA RIVER: The Skeena River is frozen over in places. The places that are not frozen are filled with flowing ice. The graph below demonstrates these ice flows have jammed and caused the river to rise. Fishing is nearly impossible under these conditions.

Skeena River height: http://scitech.pyr.ec.gc.ca/waterweb/fullgraph.asp

KALUM RIVER: Since the weather has warmed up a few “hearty” anglers are Steelhead fishing again. Last week I reported a good run of Steelhead but I have been in contact with some experienced local anglers and they tell me it has been slow.

Even though the weather has been cold this river usually does not freeze over. It has something to do with the warming of the water flowing out of Kalum Lake. It will freeze if the water level drops very low and if it stays cold and starts snowing heavily. If it is cold enough the snow will not melt when it hits the water. The flowing snow clumps together and jams when it hits the rocks and boulders. The river current in some places nearly stops flowing and if it remains cold it will freeze over in these areas that are like lakes. This seems to happen every few years or so.

ZYMOETZ (COPPER) RIVER: The water is in poor shape with moderate to heavy ice flows and fishing for Steelhead is slow. The upper section closes at the end of the month (December 31) but the lower section below the first canyon will stay open for the winter Steelheaders to enjoy.

KITIMAT RIVER: The Kitimat River is low and clear and certain areas still remain frozen. Even with all activities of Christmas some anglers are still venturing out to do some fishing on the Kitimat River.

Dec 24 Even with the Christmas Festivities, Ariel Kuppers, Mitch Lupick and Travis James managed to sneak out and do a little Trout fishing on the Kitimat River. They managed to land 15 to 20 Trout ice fishing in Goose Creek. Ariel also said that a family showed up to fish but they did not have an ice auger so Ariel and his group kindly gave up the holes they had drilled. Well done Ariel, Mitch and Travis. Not only did you guys display some awesome angler etiquette but you also demonstrated the Christmas spirit of sharing.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: Although there was some activity on the Kitimat River prior to Christmas there was very little activity on the Douglas Channel. There are a few boats planning some Winter Chinook fishing during the holidays. Stay Tuned!

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated November 29 – December 6, 2009

Dear Fishing Friends:

SUMMARY: As I am writing this summery the air temperature outside is -8 degrees C with high out flow wind (out of the north). We all know what this means…it is way too cold to go fishing. I think the wintering over Steelhead need a break from us anglers once an awhile. The Trout lakes should start freezing over now and the ice fishermen will start dusting off their gear. Weatherman says this cold snap may be with us for awhile.

FISHING THIS WEEK: (Too cold!)

SKEENA RIVER: water has been dropping all week and is in good shape. It is too cold to fish right now. Late fall Steelhead should be coming in now plus “excellent” fishing for Trout and Dolly Varden Char.

KALUM RIVER: Late fall and early winter Steelhead fishing will start again when the weather warms up.

ZYMOETZ (COPPER) RIVER: Really too cold to fish right now.

KITIMAT RIVER: The Kitimat weather was sunny and clear early in the week and some anglers managed to get to do some Trout fishing with good results.

The Lower Dike, Goose Creek and the Big Pool at Cable Car were the Hot Holes this week. Cable Car was reported to have lots of small Trout.

Mid week in Kitimat we received some light snow falls followed by some rain which melted most of the Snow.

During the latter part of this week we received Sunny, Clear and some very Cold weather. It dropped to below zero at times.

Dec 1st Jacques Losier reports 'My son Colby Age 7 caught some incredible cut throats. He caught these 20 inch plus fish with a pink worm and a real worm. He landed at least 15 to 20 fish all in the 11 to 13 inch range. Awesome day of fishing!'

Wow! These are some very nice trout. Well done Colby! And at Age 7! It is so refreshing to report a Father and Son sharing the passion of fishing and it is quality time with Colby will never forget. Well done Dad! Thank You for taking the time out of your busy life to send me the pictures

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: The Winter Chinook fishing in the Kitimat Harbour is difficult to determine as only one boat was reported fishing the Harbour this week.

Nov 1st Wes Owens of Golden Adventures took my brother Brian and my Twin brother Rick Wakita out for Winter Chinook and to do a little crabbing. I asked Wes not too try to hard to catch any fish for my brothers because of our ongoing Sibling rivalry. For readers that have brothers you may be able to relate to the normal competitive nature of brothers. It can be bad in most cases but if you add the issue that we were all born the same year. (Brian was born in January and Rick and I were born in November the same year) it can be a little too competitive but it is all in good fun!

I am happy to report that they didn't catch any Winter Chinook. :-) They did however catch their limit of crab with the help of the Ace Line Hauler www.acelinehauler.com They both loved pulling the traps and they did catch a lot of crab but 'Whats Up' with the FiFI gloves!

I am sure that Wes and my brothers put in honest effort but they did not find the Winter Chinook. Stay tuned.

Thank You to everyone who provided info and photos to this Fishing Report.

Hope you enjoyed the Fishing Report.

We are booking River and Saltwater trips for the 2010 season. Interested anglers, please contact Noel: noel@noelgyger.ca

Good Luck Good Health Good Fishing

Fishing Report from: Nicholas Dean Lodge, Terrace

Spring Steelhead fishing near Terrace is probably one of the most overlooked seasons on the Skeena system, despite its reputation for large fish. Taft Ring can attest to this, having landed this 23 lb Steelhead on his second day of fishing!

Hello Anglers, around this time of year, I always find myself reflecting back on the season - of enjoyable dinners and conversations had with clients, tying flies in anticipation of the next trip and yes, the clichéd big fish stories told at the lodge which usually don't involve myself. So, for this week's report, rather than one specific story, I decided to do put some of these memories on paper - let's call them the 2009 season highlights...

Starting our Spring Steelhead season at our rustic and comfortable lodge on Kalum Lake Road, we hosted a number of clients who focused their angling efforts on a few Skeena River tributaries and the big river itself. Like most other years, there seemed to be proportionately more, large Steelhead landed in the Spring than at other times of year, and Taft Ring took top honors, landing a 23 lb Steelhead on the fly (this week's report photo). During that same week, we had the pleasure of hosting legendary Steelhead angler Lani Waller who had recently penned his newest book, 'A Steelheader's Way.' Lani is a charismatic yet genuine, humble man whose passion for Steelhead and Steelhead fly fishing is infectious and derived from many years on the water. Having the chance to meet and share stories with Lani was certainly a highlight of my Steelhead fishing career, and I suspect for those anglers who also joined us that week.

From mid April through mid May, we continued to develop one of our newest fishing programs - Adventure Steelheading - on small, not-to-be named coastal rivers. Why Adventure Steelheading? Well, many of the coastal rivers we fish aren't the easiest to access and demand a fair amount of hiking and wading on the part of the angler. On a few rivers in particular, we'll start the day by driving down a logging road, launching in the Ocean, jet boating to the river's estuary and from there move from pool to pool in search of Steelhead that average 12-15 lbs. This year, Sonja Sorbo took top honors with a 20 lb Steelhead landed in early May - one that I'm sure she won't easily forget!

Perhaps one of our most significant announcements this year was our partnership with five-star Yellow Cedar Lodge. Beginning April 20, we moved operations to this incredible facility, and clients enjoyed some of the best fine dining, hospitality and amenities in Northwest BC. Building upon our successes this season, we look forward to working with Alf and Simone at Yellow Cedar Lodge during the 2010 season as well.

It was another great year for Trophy Chinook Salmon on the Skeena and Kitimat Rivers during the early part of our Summer season, complete with some absolute monster fish. If you saw my Trophy Chinook of 2009 blog post a few months back, you will have probably already seen a few photos of these incredible fish. Congratulations go out to: Andrea Scaramella for a 60 lb fish he landed in late July, Bob Cusick for his 70 lb lifetime fish and Ron Kostich, with an 80 lb buck which is reputed to be the largest Chinook caught by any angler during the 2009 season.

As many devoted Skeena Steelhead anglers are aware, Steelhead numbers on the Skeena during early August at the Tyee test fishery were some of the highest reported in the last 10 years, which is certainly encouraging. Steelhead fishing on the mainstem Skeena near Terrace followed suit, particularly in late August and early September, with many large Steelhead in the 18-23 lb range landed. Dennis Channing landed a chrome bright 23 lb Steelhead on the Skeena in late August with Sky Richard, which was featured in our 488th Fishing Report.

Our Fall Steelhead and Trophy Coho season is always one of our most popular seasons, and 2009 was no different. We hosted several groups through September and October and, fishing overall was quite good. Many anglers had the opportunity to experience the magic of seeing a large Steelhead rise to a waked dry fly - certainly one of those defining experiences in one's angling career. Fabrizio Oliva was one of our more lucky anglers this Fall, as his first Steelhead landed was a 20 lb fish from one of our remote wilderness rivers. If this wasn't enough, he followed up with an even larger Steelhead stretching to 22 lbs a few days later on the same system! Perhaps one of our biggest success stories this year, however, was the marked improvement in Coho Salmon returns for the North Coast - nearly every system we fished this year had an abundance of fish, and the fishing was unparalleled! Top rods went to Gary Bartholomew and Deb Morrow who fished with us in late October, and landed over 60 Coho in one day...

On the whole, the 2009 year was a successful one for us, and we owe much of this to you, our clients. We would like to thank each of you individually for your patronage and company in your quest for exciting fishing experiences, and hope to see you in the 2010 season or in the near future.

Summary of Current Conditions: With air temperatures dropping well below freezing, fishing conditions are somewhat more difficult this late in the season. It's not to say the fish aren't there - they are - but, when your guides freeze every 4 or 5 casts it's slightly more difficult to focus on your presentation. On our warmer days, however, I have heard reports of anglers catching a few Steelhead on the Skeena and its tributary rivers, particularly in slower moving pools. With the last of the Coho Salmon spawning in local rivers, trout fishing has improved markedly, and targeting these fish with small flesh flies and single eggs are likely the most productive methods of fishing.

Please contact Noel Gyger noel@noelgyger.ca to book your next guided fishing trip with us.

From all of us here at Nicholas Dean Lodge, I'd like to wish you a safe and happy holiday season this year...

Winter Steelhead and Winter Chinook REPORT

The photo of week shows Ron Wakita with a Kitimat ocean feeder “Winter Spring” (Chinook-King) Salmon landed in the Kitimat Harbour on Friday, November 27, 2009. The fish weighed 24-pounds. I made a video clip of this catch. Please scroll below for “all” the text details and a direct link to the video. Hope you enjoy it!

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated November 22 – November 29, 2009

Dear Fishing Friends:

SUMMARY: Winter is closing in fast. Temperatures are getting colder. There is snow on the ground and lots in the mountains. Many of us who like to use our jet-boats are trying to get out as much as possible as we know we will have to put them away soon. Steelhead are the only target fish now along with the smaller resident and sea-run Cutthroat Trout, Dolly Varden Char, Bull Trout and White Fish in rivers. There is ocean Winter Chinook fishery out of Kitimat and Prince Rupert starting now but is weather dependent. When out in the ocean why don’t you drop a Prawn or Crab trap. The Kalum River Coho are slowly dying off after spawning and the Steelhead are easier to catch. I have received many reports of “good” Steelhead fishing now. I have a report that the Zymoetz (Copper) River is fishing “excellent” for Steelhead using both spin and fly gear. River fishing for Cutthroat Trout in the Kitimat River is “good” and depends on the weather. Check out the Ron Wakita report below for local Cutthroat Trout and winter springs in the harbour…plus some excellent Crabbing.

November 29, 2009 One ''New'' clip posted on Video Clips

I was invited to go fishing with Ron Wakita and his good friend Wes Owens (Charter Boat owner) and his dog Shyla in the Kitimat Bay for ocean feeder ''Winter Springs'' (Chinook-King-Salmon) and Dungeness Crab on Friday, November 27, 2009. We fished for only 3.5 hours but were able to land one 24-pound feeder Chinook and 17 Dungeness Crab. We had a couple of other bites and landed a ''shaker'' Chinook. The ''winter spring'' was above average size, normally the feeder Chinook weigh around 8 to 15-pounds. Crabbing was excellent! We were only one Crab short of our limit of 18 (six per person).

The name of Wes' boat is ''Little Kris'' and is a very comfortable 30 foot Bay Liner with a 12 foot beam. Wes has fished in the Douglas Channel for almost 40 years and has owned many boats. Wes prefers to focus most of his fishing efforts on the Kitimat Harbour Fishery and knows every rock and shelf in the harbour. Wes is considered by many boaters as the ''Top Charter Boat for Kitimat Harbour Fishery''.

The 24-pound feeder Spring (weighed by Wes' digital scale) was caught with a Shimano rod and reel,Gibbs www.gibbsfishing.com UV Flasher and purple True Roll Lure and Gamagatsu hooks Rapala www.rapala.ca Cast on this link to watch the video: click here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5h1N9aw9MyQ It is also listed on the Video webpage: Title: Ocean Winter Springs and is 2009 Chinook video clip #0077. It plays for 5:21 minutes.

NOW BOOKING for 2010: Let me know if I can be of service to book you with the ''best'' fishing guide and/or fishing lodges for both river and ocean. There are NO extra charges to book through me, just a lot of free information and advice from a person with years and years of fishing and fish guiding experience. It is like hiring two guides for the price of one. I will promptly answer your questions and concerns. Cast here http://noelgyger.ca/special-guided.htm to read more of what I have to offer.

Layering with quality fleece is the key to staying warm and Gore-Tex is the key to staying dry. Helly Hansen, Simms and Cloudviel are some of the quality products in fleece and layering to stay warm. Redl Sports www.redlsports.com , Trophy XL, Bare and Simms are some of the quality Gore-Tex products available at different price points to help anglers stay dry. Staying warm and dry is the key to enjoyable fishing trips in the North West.

Worms and small lures were the most productive methods. Fly fishing this week was not as productive as it has been. Some Fly Fishers think that the Trout have gone into the deeper, slower moving pools.

Nov 24 Ariel Kuppers, Justin Lowes and their friend Travis James fished the Kitimat with their Fly rods. Fly fishing was not very productive and Justin landed one Cutthroat Trout using tackle at the end of their trip. Justin was using the ''Worm Combo''.

Nov 25 Ariel Kuppers, Justin Lowes and Travis James landed 9 Cutthroat on the upper Kitimat River geared up with the Trout Combo. The ''Worm Combo'' is a Trout rig developed by Pat Oliver. The ''Worm Combo'' is a 3'' Pink Bubble Gum Worm with a piece of a Dew Worm put on to the same hook. It is best fished with a Gibbs Float adjusted so that the worms are just above the river bottom.

Pat Oliver was an employee of our tackle store and an Associate Guide for Reliable Guide and Charters who has relocated in Vancouver. Pat has moved to bigger and better opportunities in the big city but the legacy of his ''Worm Combo'' lives on in Kitimat.

Congratulations on some great Trout fishing to Justin, Ariel and Travis with special recognition to Pat's ''Worm Combo''.

Summary One angler commented, ''that it didn't seem to matter which Gibbs 3/16 oz. Crocs he used as long as it was 3//16oz.” All the colours worked.

Ariel, Justin and Travis caught a bunch with the ''Worm Combo'' Other anglers had good results fishing a Dew Worm on its own while others had good results using Berkley's Power Bait 3'' Bubble Gum Worm without the Dew worm.

Ariel said that, ''we counted 15 Eagles perched in the trees on Wednesday and we caught a lot of Trout that day. One of the Trout we caught had scratches on it from an Eagle's talons''
Smart Money this week was to use a Worm of some kind or a Gibbs 3/16 oz. Croc and to fish where the Eagles fish!

Nov 24 Special Report Glen Kilcup and his good friend Mike Primeau were Steelheading and Glen had these comments:

''Well I finally convinced my good buddy Mike Primeau from Terrace to take a chance, and upgrade to some nice equipment. He purchased a Shimano Calcutta 400TE and he put it on one of my all time favorites, a nice 10' 6 steelhead rod from St Croix, wild river series. If you know anything about reels, you know this is some of the best and it goes well with the totally affordable rod. All items were purchased from my good friend at City Center Hardware, Ron Wakita. The day, and the new rod didn't disappoint as together with flies and spoons, we landed 9 Steelhead, 1 nice Dolly and lost a couple here and there. There were only 2 other anglers on the river that we saw, and foot prints were not evident as most of the runs hadn't been touched today.

The fish were OK. Not seeing a lot of larger fish this year or the numbers on a consistent basis. Top left was a Gibbs Koho 55 blue scale with red stripe.

Oh ya...another note to your editorial...Mike caught ALL does yesterday and I caught ALL Bucks! That usually happens with Bonnie and I!''

Well done Glen and Mike. Very nice fish! Congratulations on a great day of Steelheading!

DOUGLAS CHANNEL:

Nov 22 I had the pleasure of fishing with my very good friend and Charter operator, Wes Owens on Sunday, despite that the weather forecast was calling for snow and some high winds for the weekend. We canceled our fishing trip with our good friend Noel Gyger that we had planned for Saturday based on the forecast.

Sunday morning, Wes made a trip to the Marina to ensure his boat was secured because of the forecasted snow and windy conditions. While he was at the Marina he looked out into the Kitimat harbour and water was like glass without a ripple. Wes called me to join him to fish for some winter Chinook and do a little Crabbing. Within half an hour we were fishing in mirrored water conditions with Blue sky above us. We both commented at the awesome weather conditions and how could the ''weather guy'' have gotten the forecast so wrong. We lost one Winter Chinook and we harvested 12 Dungeness Crab but we put back 32 other keepers. We didn't find the numbers of Winter Chinook we were looking for but we sure found a bunch of Crab. I felt bad for Noel because we intended to catch some Cab for Noel's lovely wife Gail, during the trip we had cancelled due to the incorrect forecast. In the weather guy's defense we received the wind and snow that he had forecast late Sunday night. The Marine weather guys don't usually get it wrong.

Nov 22 Jason Bunn reports hooking three ''Shakers'' on Sunday in the Kitimat Harbour. Jason said they were all small and he only spent a couple of hours.

Nov 27 6:00 AM Friday morning I awoke to a call from my good friend Wes Owens saying the weather was good and we should head out fishing.

I called Noel and we scheduled the trip for 8:00 AM. We set the Crab traps and by 8:45 we had lines in the water. By 10:45 we had hooked 3 Winter Chinook landing a 24lb and a ''Shaker” (a very small feeder Chinook) which we released and lost another. We decided to head back to the Crab traps and try to get me to work by noon.

After harvesting 17 keepers with the help of the Ace Line Hauler Crab and Prawn Puller I am pleased to announce I made it to work at 1:00 PM which is noon in Fisherman's time.

The Stars of our trip were the Gibbs www.gibbsfishing.com Highliner UV Flasher with the green strip and the Dark purple True Roll Lure. This set-up hooked all three Winter Chinook this morning and hooked last weekend's Chinook at 55'. When I spoke to Dan Milanese (owner of True Roll) he said his favorite colour was dark purple. Thank You for the tip Dan! The dark purple True Roll Lure rocked in a very short time! Dark Purple is now my favorite colour for Kitimat Winter Chinook and it will be the first lure in the water on our next trip.

The other Star of our trip was the Ace Line Hauler www.acelinehauler.com Built West Coast Tough, Vartan Chorbajian (owner) has developed the best Crab and Prawn trap puller on the market, in my opinion. When you fish with older and wiser fishing partners it is important to have the ''Right tools for the job''. When we approached the traps my older and wiser fishing partners had strategically positioned themselves with Wes at the wheel and Noel with a camera leaving me to pull the traps. Simply turning out the bolt of the Scotty Electric Downrigger and securing the Ace Line Hauler with a pin, in seconds you can switch from trolling to pulling Crab traps. With the lifting power of a 100lbs at 100 feet per minute the Ace Line Hauler makes pulling the Crab traps as easy as steering the boat or taking pictures. :-)

Noel, Wes and I are also pleased to report that the Crab promised to Mrs. Gyger last weekend was delivered today. Bon Appetite Gail!

Summary The Winter Chinook will continue all winter and when the Herring are in the harbour the Winter Chinook fishing can be outstanding. The beauty of this fishery is that once you are out of the marina, you put the lines out and you are fishing in minutes. Noel and I are also planning to do some Tackle testing for our friends at Baitrix www.baitrix.com, Rhys Davis and Lyman as I just received some more samples of their new products. Any boaters wishing to try some of their new products please feel free to contact me in the store. 250 632 3522 or email wakita@telus.net I can also pass on the tips given to me by the Tackle manufacturers. Gord from Baitrix www.baitrix.com Tom from Rhys Davis and Colin from Lyman are all avid anglers who all share our passion for fishing. They are also the best source of the finer details of how to best fish their products.

Another note is that the Crabbing has been really good for this time of year. Noel, Wes and I did very well (17 keepers) in a 3 hour set on Friday and Sam Avila of Ocean Breeze Charters also had similar results during his last outing for Crab. Stay Tuned!

We are booking for the 2010 season. Any interested anglers please contact Noel noel@noelgyger.ca

Thank You everyone who provided photos and info for this Fishing Report.

Good Luck Good Health and Good Fishing!

Hope you enjoy the report!

PRODUCT PROFILE: Lure Jensen www.rapala.ca

Within the Luhr-Jensen www.rapala.ca selection of salmon and steelhead plugs, you'll not only find the most productive lures of their kind, you'll find the lures that have defined techniques for decades. What we now call back-trolling was once called ''Hot Shotting'', named for the lure that created the technique. The Kwikfish represents the number one river salmon lure of all time, and the J-Plug is its counterpart in the ocean and Great Lakes environments. And while these perennial favorites continue to fill fish boxes, we haven't rested on our landing nets. X-Series Kwikfish benefit from the latest construction technologies to offer better balance, more action and deeper dives, while making these performance features easier than ever for novice anglers to enjoy. Please note: The Kwikfish has become the favorite lure of some of the guides in North West BC.

BC Coho and Steelhead REPORT

The photo of the week shows Ron Wakita with a very bright Kalum River doe Steelhead caught Saturday, October 24, 2009. The fish was released after this quick photo. This fish is a “star” in my latest video clip…see below.

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated October 18 – October 25, 2009

Dear Fishing Friends:

SUMMARY: Weather was fair all week but lots of rain today. Some rivers have come up but most are still in fishable shape. The Coho runs are coming to an end and most fish are in their spawning colours. By regulation it closes for Coho on October 31. We’ve had a very good run of Coho this year. Both spin, conventional, spey fly fishing and single hand fly fishing have been working well. The Kitimat Coho run is really slowing down but catches can happen if you know where the fish are holding upriver. I think it is a good idea to release all dark Coho and keep only the bright ones. Another good idea, for conservation, would be to keep only males. Cutthroat Trout fishing on the Kitimat River is good. For all of the fine details and photos on the Kitimat River and Douglas Channel please check out the Ron Wakita report below. The Zymoetz (Copper) River is fishing “fair” for Steelhead. The Kalum is fishing only “fair” for Steelhead but “excellent” for Coho. Check out the Steelhead video clip on the Kalum River I shot yesterday, Oct 24. I was float fishing with Ron Wakita. Please scroll down to see the “new” Product Profile section…tackle you need to know about to catch more fish!

Video Clip preview: Ron Wakita and I were float fishing for Steelhead on the Kalum River Saturday, October 24, 2009. Ron landed this beautiful doe using Delta artificial “drifter” salmon eggs (aka space-man), white wool and a super sharp 2-ott Gamagatsu barbless hook. The rod was a 10.5 foot Skeena King Trophy XL graphite class 10 – 17LB. The reel was an Abu Garcia 6600 C4 filled with 15-pound Berkley Big Game. The foam float was made by Gibbs Tackle. Cast here for a direct link to the video. It is also listed on the Video Clips webpage: Title: Float Fishing for Steelhead and is Steelhead video Clip #0074

KITIMAT RIVER: With a little rain that we received this week the Kitimat Creek (as we have called it lately) has started to flow at a level to be once again called the Kitimat River. The upside to very low water conditions is that anglers are able to find a bunch of fish grouped up in deeper pools and cut banks. The challenge is to find them. Many anglers fishing for Cutthroat Trout found them in good numbers and they also found lots of Coho stacked up in the same pools.

Oct 20 Dave Bergeron reports catching 9 Cutthroat. Three of these were in the 2 to 3lb range. “Wow!” He also reports catching Coho while he was float fishing for Trout. Be careful Dave, some of these big Coho can put a big hurt on your Ultra light Trout Rod. Dave was going to share some photos for this report but unfortunately they didn’t turn out. Thank You for your efforts Dave and congratulations on your catch.

Oct 21 Ariel and Brandon landed 6 Trout and 5 Coho. Ariel was Fly Fishing with his Spey Rod and Brandon was using a Spinning Rod. Ariel was using a #2 Silver Dick Nite with Type 8 Rio Sink Tip. Brandon was using a Gibbs Koho 45 Blue Illusion Lure. Well Done Ariel and good job Son.

Oct 21 Dave Olsen and his fishing partner report catching lots of Trout in the Nalabila Stretch. They also reported catching Coho while targeting Trout.

Oct 22 Greg Gardiner and James Wright report hooking a dozen Trout every time they went out this week. The biggest was 18 inches. They were using 3'' Berkley Power Worms and said that they fished “better than bait”. Greg said that they had better success with pink bubble gum impregnated worms than with real worms. The proof is in the results. Well done Guys!

Summary: The majority of Coho on the Kitimat River have turned to their spawning colours with fewer and fewer bright Coho. The Trout fishing on the Kitimat River has been excellent. Many anglers have reported good results using a wide range of lures. Float Fishing natural dew worms is still popular and now artificial worms such as Berkley’s Power Bait Worms are also catching some Trout. The Dick Nite were also fishing very well for Trout and Coho also love them. The Dick Nite Spoon is productive both on a Fly Rod and on a spinning rod. The Kitimat 32 Silver Red was also a hot lure this week. Fly fishing with minnow patterns continue to be excellent. Most Fly fishers usually tie their own version of a minnow pattern to catch Trout on the Kitimat River. Some anglers reported that the flies out fished tackle although they caught Trout using both types of gear. I subscribe to the theory of doing “whatever the fish tell you to do”.

There are a mixture of a lot of Cutthroat, Dolly Varden and Rainbow Trout in the Kitimat River right now available for anglers to catch using whatever preference of Gear type. The weather and river conditions will soon be a major factor so my advice is to get out and catch them while the conditions are good. Weather and river conditions in the North West can change almost by the hour.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: There is not a lot to report from the Douglas Channel but a few boaters were talking about doing some fishing this weekend. The target was for Halibut or Crabbing with another boater testing the Winter Chinook fishing in the Kitimat Harbour. With the expectation of the up coming Winter Chinook Fishery in the Kitimat Harbour I am excited about two Lures that I saw while at the Redl Sports Distributor Dealer Show.

These are the True Troll Lures and Rhys Davis Strip Teasers Holders with Baitrix's new imitation Herring Strip.

The True Troll Lures have a bunch of new colours that I am looking forward to trying out for Winter Chinook. True Troll lures really got my attention in Coho Season and has become one of my favorite lures that has moved to the top drawer of the tackle box. They were dynamite for Coho! They should also be good for Winter Springs. Stay Tuned for Noel Gyger’s new “Product Profile” section.

Rhys Davis is one of the most popular bait holder lures fished in the Douglas Channel and has been around for decades. Rhys Davis has teamed up with Baitrix, a manufacturer of imitation Herring bait. Baitrix has developed a Herring Strip imitation that will fit Rhys Davis’s Super Herring Teaser and a Rhys Davis Large Strip Teaser. Trolling Herring Strip has always been one of the most popular lures of choice for Coho and Winter Springs in the Douglas Channel for years. Berry’s Bait stopped distributing frozen Herring Strip a few years ago and Herring Strip was no longer available. Accordingly Herring Strip was not fished as much because anglers were now forced to make their own strip by cutting up whole Herring. A few anglers continued to make their own strip but most switched to fishing anchovies or Herring minnows. Fishing Strip is back! Baitrix is very life like and can be impregnated with scent to complete the disguise. They are more durable than actual Herring strip and more important, they will be readily available on the market soon. Stay tuned to this report and Noel’s Product profiles section for the fishing results of the samples that Gord McKay from Baitrix and Tom Davis from Rhys Davis kindly gave to me to test.
I am looking forward to fishing both True Roll and Baitrix with Rhys Davis Strip Teaser holders in the Kitimat Harbour Winter Chinook Fishery. Stay Tuned!

Special Report:

I had the pleasure of fishing with my good friend and associate, Noel Gyger on the Kalum River Saturday morning. As usual we had an excellent outing looking for our first Steelhead fishing together on the Kalum. Mission accomplished as we landed a beautiful Steelhead, a small Coho and a bunch of Trout. I consider Noel as the foremost authority on Fishing in the North West, especially the Kalum and he predicts that Steelhead will get better in the coming weeks. Thanks for a great trip Noel. Hope we can get out again!

Special Thanks to all the anglers who have contributed info and photos to this report.

Good Luck! and Good Fishing!

Sincerely
Ron Wakita

Fishing Report from: Nicholas Dean Lodge

Gary Bartholomew and Deb Morrow pose with two Coho from one of 8 double headers they experienced en route to a 50 fish day. Astounding numbers of Coho landed by our clients point to one conclusion - this year's return is easily the best in the last 10.

Hello Anglers,

It's that time of year again. The forests of northwest BC are making their transition from the subdued shades of Summer, to more brilliant oranges, reds, and yellows, and mountain peaks gleam with a fresh layer of powder born from the previous night. It's Fall and the combined look and feel of the landscape just seems fishy. Maybe it's the knowledge that Steelhead and Coho are stacked in my favourite Skeena River tributaries in peak numbers. Or, perhaps it's because I force myself away from the demands of the office and fish more than I do at other times of year. Either way, I always find myself anticipating the late Fall, and getting out on the water serves as a great reminder of the wild spaces we get to live and work in. And it doesn't hurt that clients have experienced exceptional fishing this week either...
The last few days, Gary Bartholomew and Deb Morrow have been guided by Dustin Kovacvich, lodge manager and head guide, and had arguably some of the best fishing of the year - perhaps in lodge history! On one of our favourite Lower Skeena Tributaries, the run of Northern Coho has been staggering this year, with multiple fish days the norm. In most years, competent anglers can expect to hook between 4 to 10 Coho per day on the fly, and anything over that is exceptional. Well, Gary and Deb surpassed this well and truly, landing over 50 Coho on Tuesday and 60 on Wednesday. Most of these fish were in the 10-15 lb range, but there were several landed just shy of 20 lbs. Regardless of where you are, those are monster Coho. All I can say is...well done!

Now when it comes to describing our fishing with clients, both Dustin and I always err on the side of being conservative, because there are all too many fishing operations out there who claim to catch ridiculous numbers of fish when, in fact, many times they do not. We always prefer to be up front and honest with our fishing, so when our clients get to experience legitimate days like this, it really highlights just how prolific our west coast fisheries can be.

Over the years, our guides here at Nicholas Dean Lodge have developed specialized techniques for targeting Coho Salmon in our rivers with flies, to the point where fly fishing is often just as productive as casting spoons and/or marbou jigs.

Until next week, tight lines and screaming reels...
Chad Black, Operations Manager

Hi Noel, sorry I could not type a report for you. I am actually in Vancouver waiting to watch an NHL Hockey Game tonight. Please just remind the fishing folks I have some open dates for spring Steelhead 3rd week April 2010 and for them to contact you for more info and/or book it if they so wish.

Thank you.

PRODUCT PROFILE:

I really enjoyed spin fishing with this “new” super braided line. It was engineered for spinning reels. The smooth coating on the line slips through the guides quietly and effortlessly. No more wind knots and tip wraps. My casting distance improved and I had instant hook-sets. It is small in diameter but extremely strong. I snagged up and had to pull so hard to break it that I pulled my anchored jet boat half way across the river. It finally broke. Actual break strength is 53 lbs. You will recover more jigs and lures as the hook usually straightens out. I fished all day and lost only one jig. So outstanding is Dura Cast’s performance that the line won the Best New Braided Line award at the prestigious European Fishing Tackle Trade Association show in June of 2009. Dura Cast will revolutionize your experience.

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated August 16 – August 23, 2009

Dear Fishing Friends:

SUMMARY: The weather has been a mixed bag with sun, clouds and rain. Even with the rain most waters have stayed in shape. Fishing for Sockeye, Coho, Pink and summer-run Steelhead on the Skeena River is fair. Spey, single hand fly rod and conventional gear are working well. The trick is to be on the right gravel bar and fish proper techniques. This is when an experienced fishing guide comes in handy. For all the fine details on the Kitimat River, coastal rivers and Douglas Channel please check out the Ron Wakita report below.

August 18, 2009 One 'New' podcast number 0018 posted on Podcast

Category: Mid Week fishing updates. I was fly fishing on the Skeena River on August 15, 2009 with Chad Black, operations manager and pro angling guide for Nicholas Dean Lodge. Chad is going to show us what equipment we need when fly fishing on the Skeena River for Steelhead, Sockeye, Coho and Pink Salmon. The show starts with some quick photos of 'quality' fly fishing products from Redl Sports. Then the fishing video clip starts. Chad hooks about a half dozen fish in a very short time, then sits on a log and gives us a few 'key' pointers on how to be successful in this exciting fishery. Podcast (9:38 minutes) includes photos, audio and a fishing video clip. Stay tuned for more of these 'how to' podcasts!

NOTICE: The Kitimat Chamber of Commerce Derby is coming up on September 5th and 6th. It is an outstanding event and prizes have been increased to be enjoyed by all the participants. KALUM RIVER: is now closed for Chinook (King) Salmon. Coho (Silver) Salmon and Steelhead are entering the river now.

KASIKS RIVER: Coho (Silver) Salmon will soon be here. Fishing for them at the river mouth where the river meets the Skeena is a good bet now. A few Coho, by now, will be holding a little ways up-river in deep pools and under trees. If Coho are there you can usually see them rolling.

EXCHAMSIKS RIVER: Coho (Silver) Salmon should be coming in the low end now. Fishing for them at the river mouth where the river meets the Skeena is still a good bet.

KITIMAT RIVER: The Kitimat River has really good numbers of Coho especially for this time of year. There are still lots and lots and lots of Pinks although some of them are starting to spawn and die. There is still some bright Pinks coming in with the Coho,

Aug 17 Marc Girard fishing with our clients Liseann Head and Adrian Milford from Ontario. Liseann and Adrian landed 3 Coho and a bunch of Pinks on their drift. Marc said that he had a wonderful time fishing with Liseann and Adrian but he noted that Adrian sure took a lot of pictures. Adrian is our current record holder for taking the most photos on any of our drift boat trips. Adrian took exactly 100 photos on their drift with us. Wow! Congratulations on your catch Liseann and Adrian! You will certainly be able to revisit the details of your trip by looking at the pictures. Well done!

Aug 18 Mike Herzberg fishing with his friend Anther hooked 5 Coho and landed 3 on a Drift in the lower Kitimat. Mike and Anther were Hot Shotting with Luhr Jensen Hot shots #35's and hooked Coho in quite a few specific holes in the lower Kitimat drift. Mike and Anther are very good friends, awesome anglers and certainly catch a lot of fish fishing together. Well done Guys!

Aug 20 Jessie Houston drifted the Upper Kitimat River and landed 14 Coho during his drift on Thursday (Aug 20th). Unfortunately his digital camera got wet so there are no pictures. When I asked Jesse where he caught these Coho, Jesse replied 'in his secret Honey holes'. I respect that anglers who wish to keep certain ``secret Honey Holes`` private are entitled to do so. I do appreciate that the other information that is provided is accurate. I pride myself on the accuracy of this fishing report but it is only as accurate as the information I receive. I would rather Jesse or any anglers tell me he did not wish to reveal their spots than give me false information. Thank You for the 'straight goods' Jesse and congratulations on your catch. Well done.

Aug 21 Jesse drifted with Thomas Keohane after work on Friday (Aug 21st) after working at our tackle store until 5:00 P.M. Jesse and Thomas landed 4 Coho in their secret 'Honey hole' but again no camera so there are no pictures but their fish numbers are impressive. Nicely done Guys.

Aug 22 Justin Lowes fishing with some buddies landed 3 Coho in the rising Kitimat River before the water clarity turned dirty. Sorry no photos.

Summary for the Kitimat River: is producing higher than normal numbers of Coho for this time of year. The Coho are exhibiting typical behavior of migrating into the Kitimat during the early portion of the run. Coho were starting to stack up in specific holes on the lower Kitimat River with our low water conditions. It is typical behavior for Coho to stack up in these specific holes and with each tide more Coho will continue to increase the size of the group in these holes. This was evident with the anglers fishing the lower dike and the Kitimat River Intake pool and Goose Creek. When we get a little rain to increase the river height, the Coho will move up river in large groups or schools.

We observed this behavior with Wednesday's river level jump and Jesse's impressive catch results up river on Thursday. With the bump up of river height more Coho will also move into the holes of the lower Kitimat that were just vacated by the previous group. This behavior will continue throughout the Coho run on the Kitimat River during September and well into October. The challenge for Coho anglers is to first find the holes that the Coho are stacking up and then fish the most effective lures to catch them. Coho more so than other Salmon specie can be effectively caught on the wider range of tackle than other Salmon specie. Coho can be caught on hot shots, casting spoons, jigs, dick nites, spinners, bait (after August 31st on the Kitimat River), spin n glows, cheaters. curly tails, corkies, wool and flies. The list is endless. The general rule will always apply. Once the Coho holes are identified it is then a matter of choosing the most effective lure or lures to catch them in the type of water they are holding in. The beauty of Coho fishing is that there is no secret to finding them since they usually jump and splash revealing their location. Early in the run. hot shots and lures dominate as the more effective lures. Specifically the Luhr Jensen Hot shot 25 and 35's and Normark Wiggle warts. Gibbs Koho 45 and 55s in Blue scale and copper are usually the early favorites and have also dominated this week. When the water clarity is good flies are also very good. At the time of writing this report the Kitimat River is high and dirty but there will be a lot of Coho migrating in with the high water. I predict that when the Kitimat River cleans in a couple of days there will be a lot of Coho caught throughout the Kitimat. Stay tuned to this report and I will update as the Kitimat Coho run progresses.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: There are lots of Coho in the Kitimat Harbour caught this week. When the Kitimat River is low Coho will 'stack up' in the Kitimat Harbour and the Coho fishing is outstanding. Many boats were limiting out with 8, 12, or 16 Coho throughout most of the week. But by Friday and Saturday the catch rate dropped off a bit. There were still plenty of Coho caught but not in the same high numbers. Don Pearson, owner of Moon Bay Marina also had the same observation. When the Kitimat River is high and on the exceptional high tides right now, more Coho will head straight into the river. As more Coho migrate up the Douglas Channel into the Kitimat Harbour and the Kitimat drops the Coho stocks will group up again.

Aug 16 Ron fishing with Associate Guide Marc Girard and his wife Bonnie in the Kitimat Harbour Fishery of the Douglas Channel. Marc is an Associate in our Guide/Charter business but Marc, Bonnie and I have evolved into becoming very good friends who enjoy fishing together. We landed a pile of Coho and had a lot of fun during our fishing trip in the Kitimat harbour. We boated 12 Coho and watched all the boats around us landing a bunch of Coho as well. Thank You for the wonderful time Bonnie and Marc. Good friends, Good times, and Great memories!

Aug 16 Jacque Losier fishing with his son Colby and father Roger and friend Bob Birch boated a 86lb Halibut and a 40lb Halibut down the Douglas Channel. They also caught a bunch of Coho and Crab. Three generations of the male side of the Losier family fishing together is wonderful to witness and to catch some very nice fish as well. Nicely done Mr. Losiers and Bob Birch! Congratulations!

Aug 16 Eric Turcotte says, “here is a picture from a trip in the channel with Patrick Dufresne on Sunday afternoon. We both caught our limit. On one picture, I'm standing with Patrick Dufresne, Jean-François Vezina and Evans Girard. J-F and Evans were very happy for us and enjoyed the dinner. On the other one, I'm standing with 9, 10, 11 and 13 lb Coho.” Well done Eric and Patrick. I bet you have some friends that want to go fishing with you!

Aug 16 Dave Payjack said 'I had to take a break to go out and get some fish for my own freezer. I brought along my father Larry Payjack and our friend Art Bourassa both from Terrace for a two day trip. Once the wind calmed down enough to fish my dad had to put on a school to remind who I learned how to fish from by catching a 108.8 lb Halibut. We caught 7 Halibut and landed 6 of them: 108.8 lb, 97.5 lb, 48.5 lb, 43 lb, 40 lb, and 35 lb. We also caught 7 ling cod, 8 Red snapper and 14 other cod fish'. Well done Guys. Dave, I guess you can still learn a thing or two from your Dad. Well done, Mr. Payjack. Congratulations on a very impressive catch!

Aug 19 I had the pleasure of fishing with Marc Girard and his neighbor Adene Clay and Kitimat's own Lynn Stevenson. Lynn asked me if I would catch some Coho for her. I responded that she would have to catch her own and I invited her to join Marc and me on a morning outing in the Kitimat Harbour. Marc and I contacted Adene Clay to complete our August 19th morning fishing team. As many readers who have fished the Salt already know, it is very much a team effort in the boat to catch fish. From the skipper at the wheel, lure selection, baiting hooks, fighting the fish, netting fish to cleaning the fish. Everyone has to pitch in to catch a bunch of fish. We boated 14 Coho, a Pink and a Chum. Lynn landed her first Coho and then proceeded to land a whole bunch more. Adene was equally up to the task of landing a bunch of Coho on her first outing in the Kitimat harbour. Thank You Ladies for your great company, your wonderful sense of humors. Marc and I had a awesome time fishing with Adene and Lynn.

Aug 19 Wes Owens fishing with our clients Derek Blouin and his daughter Ashley and Alex and Marco Jaworsky boated 16 Coho and a whole bunch of Crab. Congratulations on your catch. Well Done.

Aug 20 Ron and Marc Girard fishing our clients Sherry and Bob Carmicheal in the Kitimat Harbour Fishery. We landed 16 Coho and one Pink and released one Coho to end the trip since we had our 16 Salmon quota for the day. Congratulations Sherry and Bob. Marc and I had a lot of fun fishing with you. Thank You for enlisting our Charter services.

Aug 21 Ron doing a little staff training with Corbin Rego who works in our Tackle Store. Also on board was my favorite ex-father-in-law Art Hackler and daughter Debbie.

Aug 22 I went fishing with Art Hackler and Martin Golhke in the morning and we landed 4 Coho. I brought the boat back in and went back out later that evening with my son Brandon and his girlfriend Justine. We boated 4 Coho and a bunch of Pinks, most of which we released. We also lost a lot more which is normal when Coho fishing, but it provided excellent material to harass my son, Brandon with. Congratulations everyone on a nice day of fishing.

Aug 22 Wes Owens fishing with our clients Mike McIntyre and his son, Keegan. Mike and Keegan landed 8 Coho and released another 4 Coho. They also caught and released a large Chum that gave Keegan quite a battle. Wes commented that Mike had great time fishing with his son, Keegan. Wes also noticed that Keegan had great skills on the rod to land the fish. Congratulation Guys!

Summary for the Douglas Channel: There are plenty of Coho on the outer waters of the Douglas Channel and also plenty of bottom fish. Anchovies and hoochies are the hot lures for Coho and herring with a spreader bar is the most mentioned tackle for Halibut. Some anglers are having good success with the fatty strip of the bellies from the Pinks and Coho that are trimmed off at the cleaning table. They are baiting either a spreader bar or a jig with these belly strips and are doing really well with them.

Ferd Bouzane went fishing with some friends on the outer waters of Douglas Channel. They took two boats and went out for a few days and they came back with a pile of fish. They brought home 56 Salmon, (53 Coho and 3 Chinook), 42 Snapper and 7 Halibut. Many boaters have similar success fishing the Douglas Channel right now.

We can expect great Coho fishing throughout Douglas Channel for the next coming weeks. Bottom fishing will also continue especially at this end of the Douglas Channel due to the excellent Pink return. As the Pinks finish spawning and their carcasses wash out in front of the river mouths the Halibut and other bottom fish will continue to migrate up this end of the Douglas Channel to feed on the Pinks. This is an excellent time to fish the Douglas Channel.

We have plenty of open dates for interested anglers who wish to book a trip. This is a great opportunity to fish with us right now. The fishing is great and because of the downturn in the economy, we have plenty of dates available. Please contact Noel Gyger noel@noelgyger.ca

Fishing Report from: April Vokey of Fly Gal Ventures

Aug 18 Hi Noel! I am in Iceland on the Midfjardará.

The fishing was a little slower than usual, but still amazing! There were a ton of grilse in the river with spottings of larger Atlantics making their way up....

Weather is a mix of rain and sun, but the temperature was fairly low (jacket weather).

They were readily taking flies off the top.

Iceland is one of my favorite places in the world, and I highly recommend taking this once in a lifetime trip! If anybody needs more information please contact Noel Gyger noel@noelgyger.ca

Regards
April Vokey

Aug 17 Hey Noel, My family and I moved to Terrace in January this year and we love it!!! I subscribed to your newsletter before we got here and we were dreaming of big fish!!!! Last Wednesday, August 12, 2009 my two boys and I headed up to the North end of Dundas Island. We moored up at Dundas 101 lodge for the night, but not before hooking into a big halibut! This is the one we have been dreaming of! The rusty old scale at the lodge registered over 80 lbs and as you can see I was having trouble holding it up!!! We had a great trip, whales all around, humpbacks and orcas and fish in the boat. The coho were thick out there!!! Keep up the good work on the newsletter!!!! Look forward to meeting you out on the water!!
Cheers, The HUGHES family

Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters

KITIMAT RIVER: Chinook are turning to their spawning colours and some of the early Chum and Pinks are also starting to show their colour change as well. Pinks are exceptionally strong this year and there are more fresh Pinks on every tide. Anglers are reminded that Chinook are closed July 31st on the Kitimat River. Chum seems to be sporadic this week and most of the Chum are still being caught on the Island across from the Hatchery or on the gravel bar below the Kitimat River Hatchery. There were a few Coho caught at the Lower Dike on Tuesday and we received a couple reports of silver bright fish being lost under the Haisla Bridge which we are assuming were Coho.

Pink jigs (either Jim's Jigs or Rainbow Jigs) and Gibbs Clear Cerise Crocs 3/16 or 3\\8 oz are still the most effective lures for Pinks. It is always a good idea to get organized before heading out. I like to organize lures and tackle into compartment boxes with everything for specific specie. Trophy XL compartment boxes are excellent for organizing tackle.

Trophy XL box with Pink Spin n Glo with a Gibbs/Delta pink mini hoochie or A Pink Spin n Glo with Gibbs/Delta pink Eggclusters are the best lures for Chum.

The best lures for early Coho are the Gibbs Koho 45 Blue scale or Koho 45 Copper spoons.

Aug 2 I had the distinct pleasure of fishing with Jody Jordan and Larry Carden. Jody is the producer of Jordan World Circus and Larry is the Animal Superintendent of George Carden Circus International. They were in Kitimat with the Circus and decided to do a little fishing on the Kitimat River. Jody landed and released this 40lb Kitimat River Chinook on our drift. The most distinct memorable moment during the fight with this Chinook was Larry saying 'Don't lose this one Jody'. Great Job Jody! Congratulations! With one of the training methods I received during the certification of the FFF Instructor's course by Tom White ten years ago I was able to give Larry a few casting tips that improved his casting. Larry landed this Pink on his very first cast fly fishing on the Kitimat River. Well done Larry! We also hooked a pile of Pinks during our drift but the hooked to landed ratio was pretty low during one bad streak but we finished strong. It was a Great day on the Kitimat with you guys. You guys were a lot of fun to fish with.

Aug 5 Marc Girard fishing with his buddies Rick Brown and Kevin Woodhouse. They landed a 30lb Chinook and 3 Chum. Marc used to work with Rick and Kevin in the Fire Hall in Prince George. Work Hard! Play Hard! Fish Hard! Congratulations Guys!

August 5th Update: My very good friends and fishing partners, Natalie and Daniel Chimko are proud parents of a Baby Girl. Natalie gave birth to a 9lb 11oz. baby girl today. She is definitely a 'Keeper'. Congratulations to Natalie, Daniel and their families!

Aug 6 Our Mobile Tackle Van photographed Tristan Duncalf age 14 and his friend Byron Campell. Tristan was fishing with his father Paul Duncalf. Bryron and Tristan are holding two out of the hundreds of Pinks that are harvested on the Kitimat River. It is always nice to see father and son and friends fishing the Kitimat River. It is also common to see Moms out fishing with the kids. We are fortunate to live in a place where Salmon fishing is but minutes away. Usually the rods are kept in the truck. Congratulations Guys!

Aug 7 Marc and Bonnie Girard fishing with their friends Cheryl and Greg from Prince George. They kept four Pinks and caught and released a whole bunch more. Nice catch folks.
There may be a few Pink Salmon sandwiches this winter or perhaps smoked Salmon during the Yatzee Games.

Summary: There are unbelievable numbers of Pink Salmon in the Kitimat River this season and from the reports from the saltwater anglers, there are more to come. Most of the Chum are still being caught on the Hatchery Island and on the gravel bar below the Hatchery. Coho are starting to trickle into the Kitimat River. Our tackle store received a report of three Coho caught at Goose Creek on Saturday Aug 8th. There are lots of Salmon in the Kitimat River right now. I venture to say that during this two week time period there are more Salmon in the Kitimat River than any other time. A Great time is being had by all!

DOUGLAS CHANNEL:

Aug 2 John Eckstein fishing with our clients Eugene Hiscock and Darren Sutton caught their limit of Halibut and 8 Cod. Congratulations Guys! Well done! It is always nice to share the fishing experience of the Douglas Channel with folks from other areas. Good Job Skipper!

Aug 2 Sam Avila fishing with his wife Mariea and son Christopher and his girlfriend Katie last weekend. They landed 25 Coho, a big Chinook,a Chum and 5 Halibut. Wow a great weekend of Family fishing. Well done! The family cruises with Captain Dad at the wheel. Congratulations to the Avila family.

Aug 3 Instore Derby. Mark Pacheko weighed in three Coho, a 12lb, a 13lb and a 10lb for our Instore Derby. The boat landed ten Coho out at Money Point down the Douglas Channel. The weather has been outstanding and the Coho fishing has been great! Good Job Guys!

Aug 4 Sabin Simard with his first Coho 10 lbs. Sabin and my friend Alain Bergeron and his first Coho 12 lbs. Sabin said, 'All together we caught 4 Coho, 2 Pink and 3 Chinook, a whole bunch of Crab and lots of sun on the channel'. 'God I love this place'.

Aug 5 Wes Owens fishing with Wayne Southgate landed nine Coho in the Kitimat Harbour Fishery. They kept eight and released one. Wes skippers one of our Saltwater Charter boats and was out doing a pre-client trip with his friend Wayne. Well done Guys!

Aug 5 Andreas Handl fishing with David, Hannes, Micheal and Thomas landed 5 Coho, 5 Pink and one big Chum. Congratulations Guys. Andreas reports that they had 'Fish On!' all day and the weather was great.

Aug 5 Mike Ferguson fishing with Karl, Sam and Stewart Woodman fishing down the outer waters of the Douglas Channel landed 8 Halibut and 32 Coho. Wow! Congratulations Guys that is a very impressive catch. Well done!

Aug 5 John Eckstein fishing with our clients Les Pinder and his son boated two Halibut. They boated a 10lb Halibut and a 60lb Halibut. The father, son team catches fish and chips! Well Done guys!

Aug 5 Dave Payjack of Sea West Charters fishing with his client Dr, Malcolm Oghorn landed their limit of Coho and a bunch of Pinks. The Douglas Channel is a great place to fish when the weather is good and the Salmon are running. Both the weather and fishing has been Great! Congratulations Doctor Oghorn and Good Job Skipper!

Summary: The Douglas Channel is producing exceptional numbers of Coho on the outer waters of the Douglas Channel. Harry Murphy reports boating 32 Coho for his clients and a bunch of Halibut. From Money Point to Cleo Point with Sue Channel and Jesse Falls in between there are Coho throughout the Douglas Channel. The early indicators of this year's Coho run appeared to be very strong and the Coho Season this year is shaping up to be a Good one! Halibut is also very good and boaters especially the boaters doing overnight trips are limiting out with both Halibut and Coho. The Douglas Channel is indeed a wonderful place to fish right now and it is only going to get better.

As many readers that have followed our fishing reports may have noticed most of my Associate Guides and Charters and I have been fishing with our families and friends. We are also fishing with each other which is rare in peak season.

With the downturn in the economy, Guided Driftboat trips and Saltwater Charter trips have been drastically reduced. There is little that can be done about the economy so we all decided to take full advantage of the fishing in peak times to fish with our friends and families. In previous years we have been too busy to spend quality fishing time during peak seasons to fish with family and friends.

We have many available days during the peak season in the Douglas Channel right now and many open days in September for Coho drift boat trips. We would be more than happy to provide an awesome Fishing experience on the Douglas Channel or on the Kitimat River for any anglers interested. Anglers wishing to book a trip with us, please contact Noel Gyger

The Kitimat Chamber of Commerce Derby is coming up on September 5th and 6th. It is an outstanding event and prizes have been increased to be enjoyed by all the participants. For interested anglers from out of town, Derby tickets can be purchased by calling the Kitimat Chamber of Commerce with a Credit Card. Please contact the Kitimat Chamber of Commerce at 250 632 6294 or email address kitimatchamber@telus.net

Thank You to everyone for submitting pictures for this report.

Hope you all enjoyed the report.

Fishing Report from: April Vokey of Fly Gal Ventures

Hi Noel, thank you for inviting me to contribute to your fishing reports.

As you know, I am based out of British Columbia, however, this week I am in Arkansas, USA and guiding for Rainbow Trout in the Ozarks (on a small Spring Creek).

Last week, I had the pleasure of fishing the famous White River with Mr. Davy Wotton www.davywotton.com World Class fly fishing instructor, US International Team coach of America and Europe, author and fly tier. It was a hoot! The Rainbows were biting, but the Browns weren't interested.

Fly fishing here in the Ozarks has been OK but is getting tougher as the weather is heating up. I understand you are having the same hot weather in Terrace.....

As you know I specialize in fly-casting instruction, workshops and ladies clothing. My fly fishing adventures consist of spring Steelhead and Trout, Salmon Jet Boat Trips, wilderness camps, BC summer Sturgeon and still water trips. If fisher folks need more information or wish to book a trip please have them contact you noel@noelgyger.ca directly.

Note from Noel: Welcome onboard April, looking forward to your contributions.

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated June 28 – July 5, 2009

Dear Fishing Friends:

SUMMARY: Daytime temperatures have been hotter than normal. The Skeena mid week was in excellent shape and more and more anglers were trying their luck. There are many anglers still out this weekend but the water has come up due to the recent hot spell. See graph below. Right now is “prime time” for Sockeye (Red) and Chinook (King) Salmon. The Kalum River is high and clean and fishing for Chinook continues. I noticed many jet boat trailers at the boat ramps this morning and many people fishing their favorite holes. The Zymoetz (Copper) River is borderline fishable. Fishing for Chinook in the Kitimat River is fair but the Douglas Channel harbour fishery is excellent! In addition to Chinook, Chum and Pink are showing up. For all the fine details please check out the Ron Wakita report below. This rising water should bring in a more Salmon and Steelhead.

I normally do not comment on the News Bulletin items I post during the week but I thought this time I would like to point out the alarming number of conservation issues. Please check them out when you have a chance and do what you can to help. A wild Salmon and Steelhead will thank you for it.

June 29, 2009 One 'New' podcast number 0015 is posted on Podcast http://www.noelgyger.ca/podcast.htm

Category: Mid Week fishing updates. Rob Vodola, a very good friend and fishing guide for Minette Bay Lodge invited John Kennedy and me to fish with him for Chinook on the Kitimat River Monday, June 29, 2009. We decided to pull some plugs from Rob's Hyde Drift Boat. Rob has all the 'best' equipment including Ambassadeur 7000 reels filled with 25-pound test Maxima fishing line, Berkley fishing rods and a huge selection of Lure Jensen Kwikfish plugs. If we caught a nice fresh Chinook it was heading for the Bradley Smoker. Podcast (4:01 minutes) includes photos, audio and video clip.

SKEENA RIVER: Is fishable although the water is coming up due to the recent hot spell. Both Chinook and Sockeye are being caught. Fishing the clean seams of the tributary rivers is a good idea.

Skeena River height: http://scitech.pyr.ec.gc.ca/waterweb/fullgraph.asp

KALUM RIVER: Is high but clean. One may try and fish the edges and slow moving corners for Chinook (King) Salmon. Both boat ramps are open and there are lots of jet boats fishing today.

Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters

Cast on link below to view flyer: http://www.noelgyger.ca/ads/Instore_Flyer_June_2009.pdf

KITIMAT RIVER: The Kitimat River above the tide line is still producing Chinook but the Tidal portion has been the hottest section. With the river level dropping, the Chinook are stacking up in the tidal portion. Chinook have been caught throughout the Kitimat River and our Mobile Tackle van has been logging fish but mostly on the rising tides.

June 28th. Derek Wakita fishing with his father Rick and friend Daniel Meyer drifted the lower Kitimat River. They landed a 20 and 35lb Chinook. Well done guys!

June 29 and 30th. Kurt Anderson landed a 12lb Chinook on a Fly July 29, landed a 25lb Chinook on a Fly July 30. Kurk Anderson is with a group of Fly anglers from Quesnel. The group consists if Ed Pinette, Greg Laberge and his son Chris. Kurt, Ed and Greg are accomplished Fly anglers and have been coming to the Kitimat River for as long as I can remember. Greg's son Chris is on a mission to land a Kitimat River Chinook. Under the tutelage of Kurt, Ed and his father, I am sure Chris will accomplish his mission shortly. I look forward to posting his picture in this report.

June 30th. Andrew and Shaydee fishing with their father Mark Zeilinski landed a 20lb Chinook drifting with their good friend Mike Herzberg. It is always nice to see a father fishing with his kids although Andrew and Shaydee are hardly kids any more. Mike was able to create a special fish picture for the Zeilinski family album.

June 30th. Ariel Kuppers fishing with his friends Derek Downey and Parick Dufrene landed a 31lb, 14lb, and 16lb Chinook. They also landed a Pink. (bottom photo)

July 1st. Mark Girard guiding clients Mike Porco and Derek Isfeld hooked two Chinook and landed a 33lb beauty. The fishing was a little slower than we had hoped but Marc managed to put Mike and Derek onto two Chinook. Derek landed this very nice Kitimat River Chinook just below the Haisla Bridge. Please see Photo of the Week above. Mike and Derek are anglers from Kamloops BC who come to North West B.C to fish Chinook every year. Congratulations Derek. Well done Marc. As you may note in the photo Marc is equipped with G Loomis rods and Ambassadeur reels. Ambassadeur 7000 reels are the #1 level wind reel fished in the North West for Chinook. The Ambassadeur 7000 has risen to the standard required to land big Chinook. The line capacity and quality drag assembly of the 7000 series are key ingredients to hook, fight and land big fish. Pure Fishing (the parent company) has refined some components over the years but the Ambassadeur reel has been the 'Reel of choice for Chinook for over thirty years'.

The G Loomis Hot Shot Rod (HSR 1025C) also displayed in the photo is the perfect rod for the 'Hot Shotting' technique that we use in our Driftboats on the Kitimat River. Steve Rajeff, G. Loomis's rod designer has perfectly crafted the HSR series with tip action to read the twitch of the Hot Shots and 'backbone' in the rod to enable instant hook set yet allow enough flex in the rod to keep barbless hooks tight. The Loomis HSR GL2 rod and the Ambassadeur 7000 series reel are the 'dynamic duo' best suited to fight Big Chinook in the North West particularly on the Kitimat River.

The lure also shown in the photo is Luhr Jensen's colour #938 Bubble Gum Pink 3/4 SE Mag Hot Shot. These Hot Shots were first introduced by our illustrious Mr. Noel Gyger probably 30 years ago. They have been the most productive diving plugs for 'Hot Shotting” ever since. A few years ago Mike Herzberg evolved a technique we fondly refer to as 'Scar Face'. This technique utilizes a K13X Kwikfish which are also made by Luhr Jensen. Luhr Jensen rocks! Especially for Chinook! The proof is in the pictures.

June 30th. Bonnie Girard drifting with her favorite guide and husband landed a14lb Chinook on a morning drift. Well done Bonnie and good work Marc producing a Chinook for your favorite client and wife, Bonnie.

July 1st. My Twin brother Rick drifted with his son Derick and our nephew Micheal. Derek landed a 25lb Chinook and Micheal landed a 35lb. They also landed a Chum. It's truly wonderfull to hear the fishing results and see the pictures of Uncle Rick, Derick and Micheal. Some of the fondest memories that we all share in the Wakita family are Hockey and Fishing related. Grandpa Wakita would be proud! Well Done guys!

July 2nd. Terence Reynolds an Associate guide for Reliable Guide and Charters fishing with our clients Peter Castlellanos and Danyel Dean. Peter hooked three Chinook on his spey rod and landed one. Peter said to Terrence, 'he had a great time fishing with Wes and Terrence'. Thank you for the kind words Peter and congratulations on your and Danyel's fish.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL:

June 27th. Frank Trenaman with a 65 lb Halibut caught last weekend in the Douglas Channel. Photo provide by Terry Gould

June 30th. Captain Bill Panton landed a 28lb Chinook and his Vancouver guest caught a 12 and 13lb Chinook

July 1st. Wes Owens landed three Chinook 11lb,16lb and a 17lb with his clients Peter Castlellanos and Danyel Dean. Wes said that Peter and Danyel were wonderful folks to fish with. It was a beautiful day and the water was like glass all day and the fishing was pretty good. The group hooked six and boated four Chinook. They released another small Chinook. Well done.

July 1st. Fred Bouzane fishing with his friends Don, Paul and Kyle Harding. They were fishing at Money Point down the Douglas Channel. They landed three Chum, one Coho and a Pink but we 'could not land a Chinook or Coho to save our lives'. 'Everyone else caught lots of Chinook and Coho all around us but we only got the Coho', said Fred. These moments will happen sooner or later in every angler's life. All a guy can do is stay focused, do all the right things and wait for 'Lady Luck' or the 'Fish Gods' to swing in his favour.

July 1st. Todd Haynes of Nautical West Adventures reports catching his limit of Chinook down the Douglas Channel. 'We were hitting one every fifteen minutes'. Well done Todd, I look forward to seeing the pictures.

July 2nd. Wes Owens fishing with his clients Natalaya and Giorgio boated a 19lb and 18lb Chinook in the Kitimat Harbour fishery. Also along on the trip were Mr. and Mrs. Dalmonte. It was a beautiful day to be on the water of the Douglas Channel. Congratulations everyone!

July 2 & 3rd. Dave Payjack hooked 7 Chinook and landed 5 with his clients on his last trip. They also landed a Chum, 2 Halibut, a bunch of Rock Cod and their limit of Crab. Well Done Skipper! Sorry, no pics.

KITIMAT TIDAL FISHERY: (new category while it lasts)

Brad Wickman caught two Chinook.

Tim, Lynn and Richard hooked 10 Chinook and landed five on July 3rd. Tim said that Andreas Handl of Kingfish Westcoast Adventure reports landing 15 Chinook in the last two days. Andreas does Jet boat trips for Reliable and has dates available. Please contact Noel noel@noelgyger.ca as the fishing in the Tidal portion is RED HOT!

Brad Wickman and his buddy 'Dumo' boated 14 Chinook July 4th. Wow! They reported hooking over twenty to land 14. Fourteen Chinook in one day! Wow! Brad is going to email me the pictures. Congratulations Brad and Dumo! This was a fishing day of a life time!

Thank You to everyone for providing their catch results to be enjoyed by the readers of this report.

Good Luck! Tight Lines

Sincerely, Ron Wakita
Fishing Report from: Gill McKean of Westcoast Fishing Adventures
Hello Noel, thought I would get my report out a little early I am so proud of my brother!

We are seeing monster numbers of fish in the Skeena and the water is in great shape I have attached a photo of my little brother with a very happy guest from Colorado. These are fly caught fish. The larger of the fish was weighed in a cradle, it was 54 pounds Yeehaaa! Great job Grass Hopper AKA splash GORDON. Some of you will recognize Gordon as he is a 'wanted' man by most of the area guides as he lives to fish giving him an edge that most wish they had!

The Kitimat is seeing great numbers of Chinook and the Pinks and Chum are starting to show here and there. We still have a few openings at the end of September as well as October if any of you wish to have a fishing trip to remember give Noel a call noel@noelgyger.ca and he will hook you up with one of the BEST!!

Good luck and good fishing to all.

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated June 7 – June 14, 2009

Dear Fishing Friends:

SUMMARY: The weather has been good all week with lower daytime temperatures close to average (19 degrees C.). All rivers have come down since their highs of last week. The Kalum River is high and clean and fishing for Chinook has started. The Skeena River water heights have dropped but still too coloured for fishing. The Zymoetz (Copper) River is too dirty to fish. Fishing for Chinook in the Kitimat River is excellent! For more detail please check out the Ron Wakita report below.

Please avoid targeting Steelhead directly on any river, most will be in the spawning mode and should be left alone. The next time we target Steelhead will be on the mainstem Skeena River for “summer-runs” starting around early to mid August.

Father's Day Gift Registry - Fathers are invited to participate in our Father's Day Gift Registry. Father's are encouraged to register their gift wish specific to brand size and colours. Family members can then choose their Father's Day Gift from the LIST at: http://www.noelgyger.ca/ads/2009-Father's-Day-Flyer.pdf confident that Dad will like these items since he has chosen them. There will still be the element of surprise since he will not know what you have chosen from his list. Fathers may register their gifts into the registry via e-mail: Wakita@telus.net over the phone 250-632-3522 or by visiting the store in Kitimat. Please include item, stock number and price. Happy Father's Day!

KITIMAT RIVER: Sunshine, blue skies and hot temperatures are welcome ingredients of summer to most North West Residents. Sport fishing anglers enjoy nice summer weather as much as other residents but too much of a good thing is not good for the fishing conditions. The Kitimat Valley received some exceptionally hot temperatures last week but this week the temperatures did not get as hot and the Kitimat River levels dropped steadily all week. As the Kitimat River levels dropped throughout the week more Chinook were caught.

Tuesday, June 9th. Ariel Kuppers fishing with his friend Scott Coleman landed a 19lb Chinook

Tuesday, June 9th. Mike Pederson reports a 20lb Chinook landed at the Pump House with many others lost.

Wednesday, June 10th. Ariel Kuppers an Associate guide for Reliable Guide and Charters guided our client Gary Bruce. Gary hooked six Chinook landing two. Gary hooked three on a fly landing one of them with his spey rod. Well Done Gary! Ariel raved about Gary's talents with his spey rod. 'All I had to do was show Gary where the fish were and he had no problem catching them on the fly', Ariel said after the drift. Congratulations Gary and Thank You for using our guiding services.

Wednesday, June 10th. Marc Girard, associate guide Reliable Guide and Charters and wife Bonnie landed this 30lb Chinook.

Thursday, June 11th. 7 Chinook were hooked at the Pump House with 6 chinook landed. All were reported to be in the mid 20lb range.

Friday, June 12th. A 24lb Chinook was caught at the Pump House and a 28lb Chinook was caught at the Lower Dike.

Saturday, June 13th. Lawrence from Prince George who is camping at the Pump House reports 'five or maybe six Chinook hooked but none landed.'

Saturday, June 13th. Mike Herzberg another Associate of Reliable Guide and Charters had an exceptional day of Chinook fishing with his friend Arty Horiannopolus and his father Gus. They landed a 40lb Chinook as well as others. Wow! Congratulations guys!

The two most productive holes in the lower Kitimat River are the Eurocan Pump House and the Lower Dike. This year's catch rates are following typical trends although there seems to be an abnormally high percentage of the Chinook being lost. Anglers who are involved in these lost fish are now majorly motivated. Stick with it fellas. You'll get them!

DOUGLAS CHANNEL:

Tuesday morning, June 9th. I had the distinct pleasure of fishing and crabbing with Bill Gower and Noel Gyger. Noel Gyger's website is quickly becoming one of the most popular Angler's websites on the Internet with over 3 million hits last year and may double that this year! Bill Gower is a Sales Representative of The Normark Group. Normark owns, represents, markets, manufactures and sells some the Premier Fishing Products fished in our region. Brand names such as Gamakatsu, Cortland, Storm, Luhr Jensen, Blue Fox, Cortland and Rapala are some of their products. Rapala is in the process of launching an exciting new series of rods and reels scheduled for market in the 2010 season. Bill was kind enough to share samples of these new rods, reels and tackle with Noel, Todd Haynes and me. Although Bill represents the Normark group which is a huge company, Normark continues to develop new innovative products specific to our fisheries in the North West. Noel and I look forward to working with Bill and Normark to develop marketing strategies to increase angler awareness of these new products.

Tuesday June 9th. Chris Couto of Kitimat reports boating three Halibut with his friends down the Douglas Channel. Their largest Halibut was 149lbs gutted. The two others were 28lbs and 22lbs. Congratulations to Chris and his friends. Those are very nice Halibut. Well done! Chris mentioned that he brought his Halibut to our Tackle store to weigh in for our derby but our store was closed. For any anglers finding themselves in this same situation, please call my cell. 250-632-1275 and I would be happy to open the store to weigh your derby entry. My cell phone number and contact info is also displayed on our entrance doors.

Wednesday, June 10th. Todd Haynes boated a small Chinook and then we watched Cosby Smith boat a 16lb Chinook by himself in the Kitimat Harbour. When the rod went off Cosby calmly walked to the back of the boat and cleared the other rod he was trolling. He then calmly walked to the cab and kicked out of gear and picked up the net and walked to the back deck and calmly reeled the fish into the net. Well done! I think we were more excited for Cosby then he was.

Cosby was trolling a Gibbs Stewart #6 50/50 spoon. Cosby swears by this spoon and the proof is in the results. Cosby also boated two Chinook on Saturday night and then hooked four Sunday morning landing a 30lb and a 35lb Chinook again by himself.

Gibbs is one the most prominent Fishing Tackle Manufacturers in the Industry.

Gibbs manufactures lures, flashers, jigs, and terminal tackle for our Saltwater fishery and manufactures the most dominate lures used in our Kitimat River fishery. Kitimat and Kohos spoons are the most popular and effective casting spoons used to catch fish on the Kitimat River.

Syd Pallister, the owner of Gibbs and Alison Obrecht, marketing manager of Gibbs are always eager to help us develop new lures, colours or various terminal tackle to help anglers in our area catch fish more effectively. Gibbs currently custom manufactures a variety of lures for our Tackle store. It is a pleasure to work with a company that is committed to developing lures for our fishery. A big Thanks to everyone at Gibbs!

Wednesday, June 10th. Dick Woodcox reports landing a 19lb Chinook Kitimat Harbour Fishery.

Thursday, June 11th. I was out fishing the Kitimat Harbour again with my good friend Todd Haynes of Nautical Fishing Adventures. It is always a pleasure fishing with Todd especially on the New 27' Sea Sport, the 'Bite's On'. Todd and I are business associates who have a great working relationship and more importantly have a great time fishing together. We only caught one small Chinook about 14lbs but there is always a quirky little incident on every trip that will be remembered.

Just before we caught the Chinook, Todd received a phone call from wife Nesia. Just after the phone call we boated the afore mentioned Chinook. After putting the fish in the cooler, Todd explained that he always hooks fish shortly after or sometimes during the Lucky phone call from Nesia.

If you ever have the opportunity of booking a trip with Todd, be sure to include into the package the 'Lucky phone call from Nesia' Thank You Nesia for the Lucky phone call on Thursday.

Saturday, June 13th. The Kitimat Harbour Fishery really heated up. Medrick Robinson fishing with his father Sammy boated three Chinook, a 44lb, a 28lb and a 22lb. Mal Haggard an Associate Guide for Reliable Guide and Charters also boated three Chinook with fishing buddies Bob Ruel and Gord Mitchell. All the Chinook were in the 20 to 25 lb range. Dan O’ Neil also reports landing a Chinook in the mid 20lb range. Wow! Congratulations Everyone!

Todd Haynes chartered a group consisting of Brian Dunn and his son, Cam and Sacha Plotinkow and his son, Victor. They boated three Halibut, four Chinook and bunch of Rock Cod and Crab on their Salt water charter with us. Brian and the entire group spoke highly of Todd's boat and his ability to put them on fish.

Congratulations Guys and Thank You for enlisting our services. They are currently doing a Drift boat trip with us as I write this report and each father/son drift boat has lost one Chinook each. I suspect there is some trash talking going on between father and son and from boat to boat. Stay Tuned!

At the time of writing this report I received a call from Wes Owens who is skippering a charter today with our clients Cheney Murray and Travis Sather. Cheney Murray just boated a 31lb Chinook with the applause from his friend Travis Sather who booked this trip with us for Cheney and himself. Travis said 'I have caught lots of Big Salmon, I wanted Cheney to land his first Chinook'. Well Done Cheney! Congratulations! It is evident why you are such good friends. Passing up a 31lb Chinook for a friend is an admirable quality in a friend. As I was proof reading this report Wes called again with the news that Travis just boated a 21lb Chinook. Well Done!

Anglers are reminded that Father's Day is approaching! Please participate in our Instore Father Day Registry or take advantage of our Instore Specials. Our tackle Store: City Centre Hardware and Sporting Goods has many preseason specials. Please click here to view our New! Updated instore flyer: http://www.noelgyger.ca/ads/Instore_Flyer_June_2009.pdf It has some “HOT” deals!

Thank You to everyone for providing their catch results to be enjoyed by the readers of this report.

Tight lines, Bright and Big Smiles.

Sincerely, Ron Wakita

Fishing Report from: Gill McKean of Westcoast Fishing Adventures

Hi Noel, I thought I would give you a quick call on my cell phone from the river. I have been guiding and fishing the Kitimat River and the fishing has been excellent! Seems like everybody is hooking Chinook…but landing them is a different story. There are some very big Chinook in the river this year and the guests are having quite a battle landing them. These fish are chrome bright, just came in the river with the high water from last week. Hopefully the run keeps building. It is going to be a great year!

The Skeena River is dropping and starting to clean. There a lot’s of Chinook in the river now and once it cleans a little more my guests and I will be there to catch them.

The Ocean fishing in Prince Rupert is heating up. Halibut are on the bite and Chinook are being caught in Edye pass and Hump Back Bay also Dundas has been seeing a few fish moving.

We still have a few openings in July so don’t delay give Noel a call 250-635-2568 noel@noelgyger.ca today.

Fishing Report from: Todd Haynes of Nautical West Fishing Adventures

Hi Noel, this past week we have had some fantastic conditions for both ocean and river fishing here. The past week we have been busy on the ocean targeting Chinooks and have been doing well. The harbor fishing is picking up now as we have been hooking up a couple of Chinooks
everyday out there and should continue to be great over the next few weeks. I just finished a trip with a group of guys from Ft. St. John and week hooked up with 6 Chinook and boated 4 nice size smiley's. The guys picked up 3 Halibut and a dozen or so Cod and Crab as well as good size Octopus in the prawn traps.

Cheers,
Todd Haynes

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated May 24 – May 31, 2009

Dear Fishing Friends:

SUMMARY: The weather has been a mixed bag but daytime temperatures are getting warmer. The lower section of the Kalum River is very high but in good shape. Chinook are in the river and the Steelhead are spawning. The mainstem Skeena River is too dirty and not fishable. A good place to fish is at the clean seams where the tributary rivers flow into the Skeena, i.e. Extew, Kasiks and Exchamsiks. The Zymoetz (Copper) River is too dirty to fish. The Chinook are coming into the Kitimat River now. For the Kitimat River and Douglas Channel please check out the detailed Ron Wakita report below.

Correction: Last week I reported, “Due to better ocean conditions, DFO predicts a strong run of Sockeye Salmon in the Skeena River of 10 million fish this year. Historical highs are 13 million fish.” My information source was not correct. According to Mark Reagan, DFO Resource Manager, Recreational fisheries, Prince Rupert BC says, “The Skeena sockeye return is forecast to be 2 million rather than 10 million and I don't believe we've ever had a run of 13 million”.

LIST OF “New” ITEMS POSTED ON THE WEBSITE THIS WEEK:

- One New item posted on 'Special Guided Fishing Trips' May 29/09
- One New item posted on 'Conservation' May 27/09
- One New item posted on 'Conservation' May 25/09

NOW BOOKING: Let me know if I can be of service to book you with the 'best' fishing guide and/or fishing lodges for both river and ocean.

KITIMAT RIVER: Steelhead fishing on the Kitimat River has dramatically dropped off this week which is typical for this time of year. In fact the Steelhead Season this year has extended longer than normal I suspect because it started later. As reported in last week's report, my son Corey, my nephew Derek and I hooked nine steelhead landing five on Saturday. I fished with my twin brother Rick and my daughter Julie on Sunday and we hooked three Steelhead with Julie landing only one, fishing the same holes and spending more time. Usually the drop in catch rate is not this significant although Julie and I blamed Uncle Rick for being 'Unlucky'. When fishing with family and when the fishing is slow somebody usually gets ribbed about it.

With Steelhead fishing on the decline Chinook fishing on the Kitimat River is starting to pick up. Mike Pederson caught a jack Chinook on Tuesday evening. I was speaking to Mike at the Eurocan Pump House shortly after he landed this jack and he said that there were two other larger Chinook caught earlier that afternoon.

Ariel Kuppers fishing with Jessie Houston and Clint Travis did a pre-client trip on Wednesday evening. They landed a 33lb Chinook (see photo of the week) and a Steelhead on this drift. Areil, Jesse and Clint hooked a beauty and had quite an episode to land it. The Chinook wrapped a stump and they had to row across the pool to unwrap the fish to land it on the other side of the river. Congratulations Guys it sounded like a ton of fun landing it but you got it!

Thursday Ariel guided two clients Wayne McComachie and Bryan Burge. They launched in the upper Kitimat to target some Steelhead and planned to drift through the middle sections to fish the lower Kitimat targeting any Chinook that may have migrated on the afternoon high tide. Part 'A' of the plan worked out as they hooked six Steelhead landing one and had another at the boat but Part 'B' of the plan did not work out as good as they did not hook any Chinook in the lower end. All in all it was still a good day's fishing. Well done guys and Thank You for enlisting our Guiding services.

Chinook fishing will improve with every high tide but it is still a little early in terms of typical timing on the Kitimat River for Chinook. We have dates available for Driftboat trips for Chinook. Please contact Noel: noel@noelgyger.ca We would be honoured to guide you on the Kitimat River.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: Ferd Bouzane fishing with Spiker and E.J brought home six Halibut in the cooler May 28th They also caught 15 Snappers, 2 Ling Cod, a bunch of Rock Cod and their limit of Crab. They boated one Chinook but focused most of their efforts Bottom fishing. Sounds like they had a pretty successful trip down the Douglas Channel. Nice catch guys!

Ferd Wuenche fishing with Ziggy, Heather and Nathan Kearley brought in a 36lb Chinook, a 48lb Chinook and a Jack Chinook to weigh on our scale to be entered into our Instore Derby on Thursday May 28th. Well done! Very nice fish! The 48lb Chinook is the largest entry in our Chinook category to date. We have a Rod and Reel as first prize for the largest Chinook. Our Instore Derby is free to enter. All anglers are invited and welcome to participate!

Todd Haynes of Nautical West Fishing Adventures had a good day on the Douglas Channel Thursday as well. I only received the highlights that there were four Halibut caught but I understand they caught a bunch more Bottom fish.

Andi Handl reports losing a Chinook down on the Kitimat River Tidal portion. We have dates available for the Tidal Fishery but this fishery is difficult to book in advance since it is very unpredictable. Any anglers wishing to book a trip on this fishery please contact Noel at: noel@noelgyger.ca and we will keep you updated.

We have a lot of saltwater boaters gearing up to head out this weekend. The weather forecast is for some hot temperatures so I am hoping the Chinook fishing heats up as well. Stay Tuned to this report.

Our tackle Store: City Centre Hardware and Sporting Goods has many preseason specials. Please click here to view our New! Updated instore flyer: http://www.noelgyger.ca/ads/Instore_Flyer_June_2009.pdf It has some “HOT” deals!
