Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated May 10 – May 17, 2009

Dear Fishing Friends:

SUMMARY: The weather has been a mixed bag of sun, rain and wind. Both upper and lower sections of Kalum River are high but in good shape. The first Chinook are in the river now. This time of year I like to remind folks of the great possibilities of angling for both Steelhead and Chinook (King) Salmon on the same day. The mainstem Skeena River is too dirty and not fishable. A good place to fish is at the clean seams where the tributary rivers flow into the Skeena. The Zymoetz (Copper) River is too dirty to fish. The Chinook are coming into the Kitimat River now. For the Kitimat River and Douglas Channel please check out the detailed Ron Wakita report below.

May 16, 2009 One New! Podcast #0013 is posted on Podcast www.noelgyger.ca/podcast.htm
WELCOME to my podcast! The category for this show is: Meet the 'best' river fishing guides. The guide today is Mike Herzberg of Kitimat BC. The show, 8:48 minutes in length, starts off with a photo of Mike and his drift boat and moves on to show him with friends and clients with some big fish. The last two photos show a huge 45 inch Chum (Dog) Salmon landed and released by his client Carmen from Switzerland. Mike talks about this fish in the audio portion of this podcast. I hope you enjoy the show! Cast here www.noelgyger.ca/podcast.htm

KITIMAT RIVER: The Kitimat River has been low and clean this week which has provided excellent steelhead fishing conditions all week.

Steelhead fishing started to heat up last Sunday which was Mother's Day. Mother's Day was also good for fathers such as Tomy Canton fishing with his daughter Laura. They caught a beautiful Steelhead. I discovered later that Laura's Mom also went on the fishing trip. Congratulations to the Canton family especially since Mom received an added bonus of a Kitimat Hatchery Steelhead on Mother's Day.

Hi Tomy: Wow! Nice fish! Great Job Dad! Dad and Daughter fishing trip. Laura will remember this for years! How did you get to go fishing on 'Mother's Day' you clever guy. I usually said that I would take the kids for the day to give their Mom a break. Thank You for the photos. I will submit your photo to Noel for consideration for photo of the week or for an update. It will definitely be in my report! Once again congratulations to Dad and daughter! Thank You so much for submitting the photos. Sincerely Ron

Mother's Day was also good for my son Corey and I as we hooked seven Steelhead and landed two. Corey who just turned fifteen years old is starting to row the driftboat on his own. Corey started rowing the driftboat when he was twelve and steering the saltwater boat since he was ten. Corey and I have an agreement that if he is steering or rowing when we hook a fish everyone in the boat especially his Dad must call him 'Captain Corey'. Corey was rowing when I hooked a chrome Steelhead on my fly rod. I lost it when she took her first run but Corey had certainly done his job. Well Done 'Captain Corey'

Donny Webber reports hooking five Steelhead on a fly landing two of them in the Kitimat Hatchery run. Donny has been hooking these Steelhead on a pink krystal flash fly. It just occurred to me to include a photo which I will do in next week's report. Many other anglers were having good success at the Hatchery run.

Ariel Kuppers, Derek Downey and Jessie Houston drifted on Tuesday, May 12th and they hooked five Steelhead, landing two of them. They hooked all of these Steelhead on hotshots. Congratulations guys!

Mike Herzberg of Reliable Guide and Charters also drifted on Tuesday. Mike drifted by himself and hooked five Steelhead landing four of them. Mike hooked all of these on hotshots and landed these Steelhead by himself which is majorly challenging. Well done Mike!

Tomy Canton reports hooking seven Steelhead on May 14th and landed five of them. 'Only during the morning I hooked 7 steelheads and landed 5. I stopped fishing during the afternoon because the last fish was a hatchery so, I kept it. It was an amazing day:)'. Congratulations Tomy on an outstanding day of Steelheading.

Corey, Art Hackler and I drifted Friday morning and we hooked four Steelhead and landed two. We shared a pool with Noel Gyger who was fishing with Mike Herzberg. I consider Mike and Noel to be very good friends and I am honored to be associated with them in the Fishing Industry.
Noel reports' I think we landed 3 (maybe four I can't remember) and had a bunch more chances ' It was nice to see Noel on the Kitimat River who after so many years in the fishing industry still 'Loves to Fish'. Noel's passion for fishing has brought Noel into the Cyber world of the internet. Noel deserves public recognition for evolving a website that profiles 'Fishing in the North West' to global status. As many of you readers can attest to, Noel's website brings 'Fishing in the Northwest' onto computer screens around the world. Noel pioneered the drift boat on the Kitimat and Kalum Rivers. Noel has helped so many people evolve in the Fishing Industry. I am proud to be associated with Noel Gyger and his website. Thank You for the kind words on your podcast. Readers interested in viewing Mike Herzberg's profile please visit the recent podcast on Noel's Webpage: http://www.noelgyger.ca/podcast.htm

I drifted with Al Smith and Martin Golhke on Saturday with the river level coming up. Al lost a Steelhead on tackle with a double egg rig. I lost one on my fly rod and then Martin lost one on a hotshot. I have a personal challenge I call the 'Triple Crown' It includes landing a Steelhead using a fly, landing another using tackle and the third landed using hot shots. We had the 'Triple Crown' on the rods but went zero for three. Such is the life in the fishing world but using the three methods effectively fishes the different types of water that the Steelhead hold in. We managed to land the fourth fish on the hotshots. Both hits on the hot shots were on a special colour that I had Luhr Jensen custom paint for us.

Anglers are reminded that the 'Bait Ban' came into effect on May 15th. There is some confusion amongst anglers that think that the Kitimat River closes for Steelhead May 15th. The Kitimat River does not close May 15th, the Bait Ban is effect May 15th. Steelheading is still very good on the Kitimat River as the results in this report demonstrate. The river height has come up overnight and at the time of submitting this report the Kitimat River is starting to dirty. Stay tuned to Noel's Twitter as I will update.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: The May Long weekend is enjoyed by many boaters on the Douglas Channel, in fact for many groups it is an annual event. Mother Nature did not cooperate with some rain and winds in the forecast. This did not deter many of the boaters I spoke to on Friday as they were still planning to go. We also have some of our Charter Boats doing some 'pre season' trips and doing some personal fishing prior to the Charter season.

Considering that this is a long weekend most of the boats are not due back to the dock until Sunday or Monday.

Stay Tuned to this report for the fishing results of this weekend.

Our tackle Store: City Centre Hardware and Sporting Goods has many preseason specials. Please click here to view our New! Updated instore flyer http://www.noelgyger.ca/ads/Apri 14_2009_INStore_Fishing_Specials_FLYER.pdf It has some “HOT” deals!

Thank You to all who contributed to this report.

I hope every one has a safe and productive May Long Weekend!

Fishing Report from: Tracey Hittel of Steelhead Heaven

Spey Fishing for Skeena Steelhead May Report Kitimat Region

As predicted the past 10 days have been the highlight of the season for our guests. Making predictions for Steelhead on the fly is a dangerous choice of words, so let’s say we had to produce the past few weeks.
Attached are a few of the monsters we captured on the spey. Mr. Yamada a regular at Steelhead Heaven landed and hooked into 1-4 fish per day, a dream come true for any angler on the fly. Not to mention watching as 100m of backing line is pulled off his reel, twice! And landing both fish. Patience is the name of the game here and let’s not kid ourselves, luck as well. Yamada also fished with a 30ft Japanese telescopic rod with no reel, a traditional and very old technique used only by Japanese anglers. Last year he broke a rod on a big fish and this year he pulled out a few nice ones as well. Again fly selection was key to the Spey fisherman as Yamada chose Pink and was rewarded each pass he fished a special pool that we targeted for consecutive days.
When you are a fishing guide your client will follow your direction as he feels you know the water and the pools the best. Well sometimes we are right on the head with pool selection as high water conditions mean the fish are moving, so why move as the fish will come to you and that is exactly what we did. The key to success is first finding the fish, then once you do that, don’t leave the fish, target the pool and stick with you guns and you will be rewarded. This lesson I learned this spring when fishing some very productive water for 2 hrs without a bite thinking the fish are not there, then having a dyed in the wool bait fisher pass thru and smack three fish, so do not give up on your selection of water, change flies, sink tips etc until you get a fish, then the others will follow.
Another great week was with Tomio, his 3rd trip for Steelhead on the Spey, this trip he will never forget. Fishing a black intruder he fooled 5 Steelhead in one day and snapped one of them off. Again fly selection was key as the pink flies did not work but when he changed to a black the game was on. Tomio is an excellent Spey caster and when you fish with T-14 and other sinking tips your cast has to be perfect. Tomio hooked 10 fish in 3 days and commented to his friends before leaving that he would get a 3 fish day, we'll Tomio your friends can eat crow now. Attached is a pic of Tomio and a small taste of his trip.
Guests Sara and Cristian from Italy, spent some days with us and Cristian landed a chrome bar on his single hand fly rod.
The Diva of the season was Mrs. Hak who landed her first Steelhead on the Spey and was top rod for the week, in a very cold and snowy week. With the tough times we face this season with the credit crunch we were fortunate to have a nice group of Steelheaders and look forward to our August to October Steelheaders who have booked for the autumn season.
Now that the middle of May is closing in on us, so are the Chinooks and they are trickling in small numbers. A friend told me that he saw a fly angler with an ultra-light set-up, reel in a 25lber on the Kitimat River yesterday, fresh from the ocean.
June and July is peak for Saltwater and Freshwater Chinook out of Kitimat and July and August to the 6th for Skeena record fish.
Space is limited for the summer fishing season so please let us know noel@noelgyger.ca if we can book you a trip. Tracey John Hittel
Fishing Report from: Chad Black of Nicholas Dean Lodge

Remote Coastal Steelhead fishing at its best! Sonja Sorbo hooked this huge 20 lb buck in a deep pocket at the head of a shallow riffle on one of our favourite small streams. Dustin Kovacvich Photo
Hello Anglers, After a break in my fishing reports over the last while, I'm back with much exciting news! First off, I must formally congratulate Dustin and his wife Ruby, on their new addition to the family, Cayleigh Marie Kovacvich. Cayleigh was born on March 22, 2009 around 6:30 am, and weighed 7 lbs, 1 ounce. I'm happy to report that Cayleigh, Ruby and Dustin are doing well, and that as of this writing, Cayleigh does not yet have a fly rod in her hands, but given a few more months, I'm sure that she'll have the double spey down before she can say Daddy! Be sure to check out our updated blog site at www.nicholasdean.blogspot.com to see photos of Cayleigh, Ruby and Dustin, along with other updated fishing news.
Our Spring Steelhead opener during the last week of March posed difficult angling conditions, as we were greeted with temperatures well below zero and river levels very low and clear. Many of our favourite pools and holding water were virtually inaccessible by usual means, unless anglers were willing to embark on lengthy and often challenging hikes through snow up to one's waist. Now, as most anglers can probably attest, the measure of a good guide and lodge can often be judged on how hard its staff work to ensure clients have an enjoyable trip, and one that maximizes angling opportunity which, in these conditions, was no easy feat! To get around this, we simply had to improvise. Our solution: a snowmobile placed strategically at the take out location, to ferry clients and our 12' Aire rafts up the river valley and a farmer's field, to trucks waiting nearby. Not an easy day by any stretch, but realistically, this logistical maneouvre made all the difference, as most fish were caught mid way through the drift in deep, slower moving pools that afforded Steelhead some security. Taft Ring, a new client of ours, fared out best during these tough conditions, with several Steelhead landed during the week, the largest of which was in the 22 lb range. Taft had a particularly deft touch when it came to manipulating his fly on the swing - most of his grabs occurred just after twitching his rod tip, to animate his fly in the slow moving currents. Congratulations Taft, and we look forward to seeing you again next year!
Certainly one of the highlights this Spring was having the opportunity to fish and spend time with renowned angler, Lani Waller. It is obvious that Lani is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to the subject of Steelhead fly fishing, and he conveys this knowledge and a love of Steelhead quite well through his stories, accumulated over many years spent on the water. His new book, entitled 'A Steelheader's Way' is a great read, and one that combines Lani's advanced knowledge of Steelhead fly fishing tactics, with a unique philosophical perspective on Steelhead. I highly recommend adding Lani's book to your personal library if you're a serious Steelhead angler. Lani can be reached at www.laniwaller.com.
Finally, I'm pleased to say that we've now made the transition to spectacular Yellow Cedar Lodge (www.yellowcedarlodge.ca)! This move has been a long time in the making for us, and we have been extremely impressed with the accommodations, service, and dining provided for our guests by Alf and Simone Leslie. Riverfront mountain views, private rooms with ensuite washrooms, amenities including a hot tub, sauna, games room and patio, and spectacularly prepared meals all combine to give guests a 5 star appeal. Paired up with the unparalleled knowledge our guides have of our local waters, Steelhead and Salmon fishing trips simply don't get much better. For those of you who would like a little more information on Yellow Cedar Lodge, or our first class fishing packages, please contact me or Noel Gyger noel@noelgyger.ca today.
Until next week, tight lines and screaming reels...

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated April 26 – May 3, 2009

Dear Fishing Friends:

SUMMARY: The weather has been good all week with average daytime temperatures and lots of sun until it rained overnight. The rivers are on the rise as more snow melt comes down. The run-off has come down slowly so there is no danger of flooding yet. Both upper and lower sections of Kalum River are in good shape. The first Chinook are in the river now. This time of year I like to remind folks of the great possibilities of angling for both Steelhead and Chinook (King) Salmon on the same day. The main stem Skeena River is dirty and not fishable. Best places to fish now are at the clean seams where the tributary rivers flow into the Skeena. For the Kitimat River and Douglas Channel please check out the Ron Wakita report below.

When May comes around I cannot help but think of Chinook (King) Salmon on the Kalum River. Actually, this is the time, everything being normal, when you can catch both Steelhead and Chinook on the same day. Cast here http://www.noelgyger.ca/articles/Articles-May-2nd-on-the-Kalum-by-Noel.doc to read an article I wrote about on such a day. The guides still have a few days open so if you are interested in booking a trip contact me noel@noelgyger.ca anytime.

An important message from Alexandra Morton: Here in British Columbia we are in the last two weeks of electing a Provincial government and this will have critical affect on wild salmon due to privatization of rivers and ocean spaces, even schools of fish. Many of you received responses from the BC government currently in power, the “Liberals,” headed by Premier Gordon Campbell. They said the BC government is not allowed to intervene in the Appeal of the Constitutional Challenge I won regarding fish farms. This is not correct they do have this power. I have written a response on the website www.adopt-a-fry.org It is becoming very clear that while the current BC government has allowed the salmon feedlots to expand despite the science, public outcry and impact on rural economies they realize they are a political liability and thus are making every effort to distance themselves from the industry.

There are simple answers to this mess which now threatens the entire eastern Pacific and the BC economy. Aquaculture is not the problem, the problem is lack of political will. Alaskan salmon have political will on their side and they are thriving.

For those of you in B.C. please view this film http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tPuJfbS2qMY and vote. The existence of wild salmon depends very much on this election.

FISHING THIS WEEK: - GOOD -

LARGEST FISH OF THE WEEK: Specie: 20-pound Steelhead Where: Kitimat River Angler: Ariel Kuppers

WEATHER: A few showers ending early this afternoon then cloudy with 40 percent chance of showers. Wind south 40 to 60 km/h diminishing to 20 this morning then becoming light this afternoon. High 15. Sunrise 5:52 AM Sunset 8:11 PM. Today’s yearly average temperatures: Maximum 16 degrees. Minimum 4 degrees.

WEATHER REPORTS VIA TELEPHONE: Terrace 250-635-4192 Kitimat 250-632-7864 Prince Rupert 250-627-1155 Smithers 250-847-1958.

SKEENA RIVER: Is too dirty to fish. Fishing the clean seams of the tributary rivers is a good idea now.

KALUM RIVER: Is in good shape and rising slowly. Good numbers of Steelhead are in the river now. Spring runs of Steelhead should be coming in. Fishing for them with fly or spin tackle works well. Fresh early run Chinook (King) Salmon are expected anytime. We have caught them around mid April. Chinook have been seen rolling in the lower river.

April Vokey, Andrea Charlton and Rob Vodola invited me to go fishing with them on the Kalum River yesterday. First day out for the girls was a little slow as fly tackle had to be arranged and set-up. They have another 5 days of fishing to do so I am certain things will turn around. Rob had a huge male Steelhead close to landing with his spey rod but the hook pulled out last second. April Vokey is a fishing guide based out of Chilliwack, BC. In addition to fish guiding, she specializes in fly-casting instructionals, workshops, wilderness camps and ladies clothing. Her company is Flygal Ventures www.flygal.ca

ZYMOETZ (COPPER) RIVER: Is too dirty to fish.

KITIMAT RIVER: Kitimat River Steelhead are in full swing with lots of Steelhead being caught. This has been a 'Great Steelhead season so far with some steelhead caught weighing over twenty lbs, one pushing thirty pounds. Wow ! And the weather has been outstanding! Just when we thought that the Steelhead season was going good, the hot weather started to bring the river level up and the Kitimat River started to murk up a bit. The Kitimat River very seldom becomes unfishable due to snow melt but the higher, murky water will present some challenges. Anglers simply need to adjust to the conditions. Float fishers need to lengthen the float and use some roe, Hot shotters may have to fish a larger size and Fly Fishers may have to change the sink tips and possibly change to different flies. All anglers should be making some kind of adjustments. If the right adjustments are made sometimes Steelheading can still be very good...The weather is forecast for cooler temperatures so conditions will improve.

Early in the week the conditions were really good and accordingly the catch rates were also very good. I drifted Sunday evening with two fishing partners Al and Martin. Al hooked and lost two Steelhead and Martin landed a Hatchery Steelhead which he retained. (More important details about hatchery Steelhead later in this report)

James Botrokoff is a Kitimat Resident who moved to Edmonton to work and is back home fishing with his father Anthony. It is a wonderful scenario to watch a father and son share the passion for fishing. There is always a bit of competition involved, sometimes a little trash talking and even some of those 'Grass Hopper' lessons that a son must often have to listen to. Some of the fondest memories I have of my father are our family fishing trips. James has been home fishing from April 25th to April 28th and he has landed eleven steelhead and his father, Anthony has landed four. The official scoring has the son James ahead in the count since he has had more time to fish but James' catch results are actually a complement to the 'teacher.'

Another father/son fishing team fishing the Kitimat River are my good friends, Wayne Van Velzen and son Eric. In the past week Wayne has landed ten steelhead and Eric has landed four including one over twenty pounds on a fly. Eric is fly fishing most of the time and with all due respect to Wayne's very good results I would score Eric’s catch higher since they have been on the fly. This will make for interesting whiskey conversation around their camp fire. Wayne brought his good friend Bob who landed his first Steelhead on Wednesday and Eric brought his good friend Peter (Greg) who I drifted with on Thursday morning. We hooked two Steelhead and Peter caught and released a Hatchery Steelhead. Wayne and his friend Bob also landed a Steelhead Thursday morning.

Rob Vodola and Mike Herzberg drifted the Kitimat April 28th from the Sawmill down to the Pumphouse. Had a great drift, going 6 for 6. Rob landed two float fishing. All fish were released, all were wild. The five does ranged from 11 to 14 lbs., the buck was pushing twenty. Photos by Mike Herzberg (associate fishing guide for Reliable Guide and Charters) Well done Mike and Rob!

Ariel Kuppers and Eric Neidert who are also associate guides for Reliable Guide and Charters drifted the lower Kitimat on an evening drift and they landed a big Buck pushing twenty pounds. Reliable Guide and Charters still has some booking dates available for Steelhead. Please contact Noel noel@noelgyger.ca if you wish to book a trip. I had the pleasure of doing a morning drift with Todd Haynes of Nautical West Fishing Adventures Friday morning. We both lost a Steelhead but we had a great time! Todd is a talented angler and a pleasure to fish with. Todd also has dates available for Steelhead bookings.

Other guides and anglers have been in our tackle store-City Centre Hardware Sporting Goods and have reported good catches as well. Mr. 'G' continues his success as he reported landing a Steelhead on Wednesday morning.

We received four Hatchery Steelhead entries from Martin Golhke, Derek Pacholokf, James Botrokoff and Peter Grogan into our Instore Hatchery Steelhead Photo contest this week. This contest was designed to raise public awareness to the Kitimat Hatchery Head Recovery Program. We have donated a Shimano Rod and Reel for this promotion. If a Hatchery Steelhead is retained by an angler it is Very Important that the head is turned into our store or to the Kitimat Hatchery. The Kitimat Hatchery uses the information contained on code wire in the head of the Steelhead and more importantly receives credit for producing the Steelhead. The Kitimat Hatchery budget is constantly being cut and Head recovery numbers are an important factor considered by DFO managers. Once we take a picture of the Hatchery Steelhead and the head is turned in to us or the Hatchery, the angler's photo is entered into a draw for this Shimano rod and reel. I am aware that a large number of anglers who have the highest regard for Steelhead prefer to catch and release all Steelhead. The Kitimat Hatchery is responsible for the exceptional return of Steelhead that all anglers enjoy fishing for on the Kitimat. I cannot stress enough the importance of Anglers who retain a hatchery Steelhead to please turn in the head. Anglers are also reminded that when they retain a hatchery Steelhead they must immediately record it on their fishing license and can no longer fish the Kitimat River for the remainder of that day. Steelhead on the Kitimat will continue for another couple of weeks.

Anyone interested in a Guided Trip on the Kitimat River for Steelhead with Reliable Guide and Charters please contact Noel noel@noelgyger.ca and he would be more than happy to accommodate.

UPDATE – Sunday morning: The Kitimat River water level has risen to marginally fishable conditions in the lower Kitimat, Sunday morning (May 2nd). The high temperatures we received on Saturday afternoon combined with some rain we received Saturday night has bought the Kitimat River water level up. There is a 6' wet line on the Pump House scale at 8:30 AM which indicates that the water level has started to drop. There is also a high tide peaking at 9:00 this morning and will drop for the next six hours. This out flow tide will creat a flushing effect which will help the river level to drop faster. The Kitimat River drops and cleans faster than other systems in the North West. The upper Kitimat will clean first and will the tributaries. Smart money says to fish the upper Kitimat or at the mouth of one of her clean running tributaries.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: Todd Haynes of Nautical West Sport Fishing is heading out this weekend to do some Pre Charter fishing. (Homework trips is how I refer to these trips) The better Guide and Charter Companies in the industry do these trips to stay up to date on changing issues with the fisheries and to get 'dialed in' prior to the Chartering season. Todd will be joined by his lucky fishing partner and wife Nesia. A tradition has evolved where Nesia lands the first big Chinook of every season. Good Luck to Todd and Nesia, we look forward to seeing the pictures.
Other boaters are still focused on Crabbing and some boaters are starting to do some bottom fishing.

Thank You to everyone who contributed info and photos to this report.

Fishing Report from: Tracey Hittel of Steelhead Heaven

This past weeks Steelhead. Alexi landed this big male on the spey with his black and blue magic fly. When we entered this small pool he hooked 3 fish in 20 casts with an orange fly, all to elude him. After many casts with no fish, Alexi changed flies to a different color, the second cast he landed this big male. When Alexi hooked his first fish in this pool it took on the dangle and when he set the hook the rod stopped like it was on a large rock. In fact we both looked at each other wondering if it was a fish, he quickly gave me the nod and the beast moved into the top of the pool in the deep fast holding area. It then decided to make a move downstream with a screaming roar, all to have this huge Steelhead spit the hook. Alexi saw a small glimpse of this fish and said it was very thick. The good stories are always about the one that got away.

Also attached is the Steelhead queen, Brenda Kochan, with a chrome female she landed, as you can see this fish is very healthy and fresh from the sea.

Most of April was very cold and snowed a lot so the catching was slower than usual. Now that water temps have risen to 4-5C the fishing has finally started to turn, and this year the fish are very large. Local anglers are chin waggin that 30 plus pound fish are not uncommon and the largest some of the locals have even landed. These guys have put 250-300 Steelhead on the bank over the years so I am happy to say we have a fantastic fishery. May is peak season and with the fish late this year the next 2 weeks are going to be super, not to mention the fresh Chinook coming in very soon. Tracey John Hittel

Fishing Report from: Chad Black of Nicholas Dean Lodge

Chad Black, operational manager, for Nicholas Dean Lodge sent these photos for this report. The fellow holding the Steelhead for the young lady is head guide Dustin Kovacvich. Fishing this week has been very good on many of the smaller streams and rivers. Note the little bit of snow still on the banks.

In Chad’s own words, “The fishing on the Skeena River and its tributaries this Spring has been downright challenging at times – March and early April saw some of the lowest river levels in years – but in most cases, the fishing has been good for those willing to put their time in while on the water, and perhaps go the extra distance. The past week has been a classic example of this. While some of our favourite waters close to home have produced some great fish – including a few in the 17-18 lb class, we’ve been having great success on smaller, lesser known rivers. Rivers with difficult access, and often difficult hiking. But, the rewards have been worth their weight in silver – multiple fish days on the fly, with fish averaging 12-16 lbs, on some of the most remote and beautiful rivers around – tend to make for happy clients, and vibrant conversation at the dinner table.

Speaking of dinner tables, we now have a different one! We’ve moved venues and have partnered up with Alf and Simone Leslie of Yellow Cedar Lodge, located on the Skeena River just outside Terrace. Having experienced two weeks of exceptional food, accommodations and camaraderie here at Yellow Cedar Lodge, and with much positive feedback from clients, I can say with confidence that we’ve found a winning combination. But, why take my word for it – come see for yourself! We have several spaces still available during the best seasons for Trophy Chinook on the Skeena and Kitimat, chrome bright Summer Steelhead on the main channel Skeena, and even Fall Steelhead – complete with dry flies – during September and October. Join us on one of these trips, and not only will you likely experience some of the best fishing available around – but now you can take advantage of all the amenities available at Yellow Cedar Lodge. Whether it’s the inspiring mountain views, the comfort of the hot tub after a cold day on the river, or the 5 star cuisine prepared by Alf and Simone, it will be an experience that you won’t soon forget. Give Noel a call today 250-635-2568 to book your 5 star fishing trip with us and Yellow Cedar Lodge, and experience fishing at its finest…”

Until next week, tight lines and screaming reels…

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated April 19 – April 26, 2009

Dear Fishing Friends:

SUMMARY: The weather has been good with average day time temperatures and no rain after Tuesday. The rivers are on the rise as more snow melt comes down. Both upper and lower sections of Kalum River are in good shape. Check out my two reports below for April 20th and 22nd. The first Chinook are in the river now. They have been seen rolling in the lower pools. The main stem Skeena River is dirty and not fishable. Good runs of Steelhead are coming into the many isolated coastal streams and rivers. For the Kitimat River and Douglas Channel please check out the Ron Wakita report below.

LIST OF “New” ITEMS POSTED ON THE WEBSITE THIS WEEK:

CURRENT REPORT and summary for Skeena and Tributaries:

TYPE OF FISH CAUGHT: Steelhead and Trout for river. Salmon, Halibut, Bottom Fish and Dungeness Crab for ocean.

Thank you for using barbless hooks.

FISHING THIS WEEK: GOOD

LARGEST FISH OF THE WEEK: Specie: 20-pound Steelhead Where: Kalum River Angler: Rob Vodola

WEATHER: Sunny with cloudy periods. High 15. UV index 5 or moderate. Sunrise 6:07 AM Sunset 8:58 PM. Today’s yearly average temperatures: Maximum 14 degrees. Minimum -1.1 degrees.

April 20…Rob Vodola, Carey Braun, Mike Pederson and I fished the Kalum River on April 20th. Due to the steady rain (no wind) the water was on the rise (big time), lots of debris suspended in the water, which are the worst fishing conditions I know of. Despite these conditions Rob and I landed a Steelhead each (both female)…see photo of the week. Mike lost one close to the net. We, maybe, had another couple of chances. Mike’s knees are still shaking! Fishing was good but the catching was a little slow.

April 22…Both upper and lower Kalum River is in great shape although very clean, sometimes too clear to hook a lot of fish…but Rob, Brent and I fished and we had a blast. I hooked 5 landed 2. Rob hooked 6 landed 3 and Brent hooked 3 and lost one close to the net. The fish landed were mostly dark males in spawning colours. The one female looked very nice. Females always look very nice, spawning or not.

This is a Classified River year round and can be guided from March 15 through October 15 only. The Steelhead record is 32-pounds. To see a photo of this fish cast to: http://noelgyger.ca/records/Record003.jpg The angler is Dennis Therrien.

ZYMOETZ (COPPER) RIVER: Is too dirty to fish.

Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters.

KITIMAT RIVER: We received heavy rain last weekend including Monday and the river level rose and was unfishable by Tuesday. I logged the height of the river on Tuesday morning when the Kitimat River was the highest it has been this Steelhead season. I logged the height again Wednesday morning 23 hours later and the Kitimat River had dropped 3 1/2 feet and was fishable.

Before the Kitimat became unfishable, John Love from Smithers reports landing a Steelhead on Sunday April 19th that weighed 19lb 11oz. below the washouts in the upper Kitimat section.
John said, 'he was fishing with his fishing partners, Patrick Hudson took the first photo showing Norm Fallows landing the fish with the cradle and the second photo was take prior to release'. Congratulations John,Patrick and Norm! And thank you for sending the pictures and details for the readers of this report to enjoy.

When the river is high and dirty she is unfishable these conditions usually entice fresh, silver Steelhead into the Kitimat River. When the river level drops and water clarity becomes fishable usually more fish have migrated into the system to be caught. This observation evolved as anglers started to catch very nice Steelhead on Wednesday. This is the case with most rivers in the North West.

Spencer from Terrace hooked three Steelhead on Wednesday and caught and released two silver Steelhead, one had sea lice. He was float fishing a pink worm in the middle section of the Kitimat River. 'Mr. G' landed one on the upper section of the Kitimat on Wednesday as well.
Todd Haynes of Nautical West Fishing Adventures and fishing with his fishing partner, Patrick Havig hooked two Steelhead on Thursday landing one about 16lbs on the upper section.
On Friday, Todd and Patrick hooked five steelhead and landed four. Two of these are featured in this report. See the photos in Todd’s report below. These were also caught in the upper section of the Kitimat.

Two Fishers using spey rods were in our Tackle store speaking to Ariel and they landed two silver Steelhead at Humphry’s on Friday. Jason Bunn landed an 18lb chrome Steelhead at the Power Lines on Friday. The Kitimat Hatchery brood collection team reported having two bright Steelhead in their brood collection barge Friday. Mike Campbell reports catching a bunch of Trout.

I did a 'homework drift' (is how I refer to pre-trips prior to clients) on Saturday. It was actually a multi purpose trip as I was fishing with my son Corey who is fifteen. We were also doing an ongoing training session rowing the drift boat. Corey had been rowing since he was twelve and we are evolving his rowing skills every year. This was also a quality father/son fishing day with a very good friend and associate guide, Marc Girard.

We drift from the Eighteen Mile bridge to the Big Spruce which is a very long drift (actually too long to fish effectively) but I wanted to show Corey and Marc the entire system. We hooked seven Steelhead but only managed to land two. The two we landed were very nice Steelhead, one was Big and the other was bright. Typical Male/Female scenario. The male was big and the female was pretty. The first Steelhead Corey landed below the second washout was on a float with two jensen eggs and white wool (one of my favorite rigs). Marc hooked it and passed the rod to Corey. Thank You Marc! As you will notice from the picture of Marc holding this Steelhead it is a little coloured and has been in the system for a while. We measured this Steelhead and the calculation worked out to 20.5lbs. It was a proud moment to watch my son land a twenty pound plus Steelhead even though he hadn't hooked it himself. We are both grateful to Marc. Corey hooked and landed the second Steelhead on a Hot Shot on his own. I had this hot shot custom coloured by Luhr Jensen. This was a bright female but no sea lice.

As we drifted into the middle and lower section we noticed the fish were brighter. Although we didn't land them we saw the colour of the fish while we were fighting them. We also focused our efforts to fly fishing in the lower Kitimat. I have a personal challenge that I call the 'Triple Crown'. The 'Triple Crown' is to land a Steelhead on a Hot Shot, on tackle and on a fly in the same day. Corey had landed one on a tackle and on a Hot Shot so we wanted Corey to land one on a fly. We never did land one on a fly but 'nothing ventured-nothing gained'. It was a Great day of fishing with my son Corey and a very Good friend Marc.

As we drifted by the Power Lines Terry said that he lost a very bright Steelhead and his partner Dave landed a beautiful bright fish in the morning. Brice from P.G just landed a bright, hatchery Steelhead on the Hatchery Island this morning (Sunday). In fact I just received the info as I am writing this report.

ANGLERS BEWARE of a problem spot located just below Saw Mill in the 'new Nalabila' channel. It is passable but stay to the left and make sure all the rods are low and are not hanging out of the boat (photo above is taken looking down stream).

The weather is bright and sunny and most of the Steelhead are bright and shiny.

Anyone interested in a Guided Trip on the Kitimat River for Steelhead with Reliable Guide and Charters please contact Noel: noel@noelgyger.ca 250-635-2568 and he would be more than happy to accommodate.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: Jason Bunn reports landing a Halibut down the Douglas Channel. Jason said that he was going to email the picture and details of the Halibut but has not done so in time for this report. He probably went fishing.

Most boaters are reporting good numbers of crab and I spoke to one group from Vernon returning home with two halibut, a 24lb and a 10lb. chicken plus their limit of crab. These were not big Halibut but these folks were happy with their catch. They said 'this was our first trip, the weather was good, the scenery was beautiful and we have fish to take home'. Anglers are reminded that the shell must be left on the crab while transporting.

The Salt Water fishery will become more active as the weather is improving. Stay Tuned to this report for future updates.

Anglers are reminded of the 'Great Prices' on our Instore Flyer. We will run Clearance and Hot Specials all season. Anyone wishing to receive these flyers on a regular basis please sign up for Noel's Weekly Fishing Report and there will be a current flyer posted on Noel Gyger's Fishing Report page as well as Noel's other website pages. If you have any questions regarding any of the product please email me at wakita@telus.net

Fishing Report from: Gill McKean of Westcoast Fishing Adventures

Morning Noel thought I would get my report in early as we are working on 20 days straight guiding it has been a fantastic season!

The photo above is of John Lundsten from San Diego, California this was his first ever Steelhead on the FLY as well as his first Steelhead ever!! at the young age of 70 what a fish and what a moment for us to share. Great job John this was his first and I don't think it will be his last!!

The fish are still coming in good numbers. We are seeing bright fresh fish every day! At the beginning of the week we had a hard rain and blew most Region 6 rivers out. On the bright side we saw bright shiny fish arrive on the dropping water. All I can say is Yeee Haaa! There have been a few reports of the Kalum producing a few early Chinook. The earliest I have landed a 45 pounder was April 14th. They wake you up on your steelhead gear.
All other rivers are producing good numbers of steelhead as well. Good luck
out there!!

We still have a few last minute openings for 1 or 2 persons. Call Noel 250-635-2568 noel@noelgyger.ca and he will hook you up!

Fishing Report from: Todd Haynes of Nautical West Sport Fishing – April 26th

Hi Noel, the Kitimat River has been fishing good all week, except for Monday. I have included a couple of pics. Lots of people are out enjoying this special fishery. Halibut and Crab fishing is a little slow in the Douglas Channel right now. I have heard the Chinook fishing out of Prince Rupert is really starting to pick up. The ones caught are not too big, around 20-pounds. Most of these fish are bound for the Skeena River where they will swim long distances to their home tributary waters. Take care. Todd Haynes.

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated April 12 – April 19, 2009

Dear Fishing Friends:

SUMMARY: The weather has been good all week with some rain towards the weekend. The snow pack is starting to melt and the rivers are on the rise. The Steelhead that were holding in deep dark pools are on the move. Both upper and lower sections of Kalum River are in good shape even though the water is rising. The first Chinook should be coming into the Kalum River soon. The Zymoetz (Copper) River is dirty and not fishable. The main stem Skeena River is dirty but is still borderline fishable below Terrace. A good run of spring Steelhead and Chinook (King) Salmon should be coming in now. Good runs of Steelhead are coming into the many isolated coastal streams and rivers. For the Kitimat River and Douglas Channel please check out the Ron Wakita report below.

April 16, 2009 One 'New' clip posted on Video Clips:

Rob Vodola and I were fishing for Steelhead on the Kalum River, for the first time this year, on April 13, 2009. We fished a short day but still managed to hook four nice fish and landed two. The two landed were both females. If you are interested to book a guided Steelhead fishing trip please contact me anytime. FISHING GUIDE REPORTS FOR THIS WEEK ARE FROM:

Ron Wakita
Gill McKean
Todd Haynes
Tracey Hittel

CURRENT REPORT and summary for Skeena and Tributaries:

TYPE OF FISH CAUGHT: Steelhead and Trout for river. Salmon, Halibut, Bottom Fish and Dungeness Crab for ocean.

Thank you for using barbless hooks.

FISHING THIS WEEK: GOOD

LARGEST FISH OF THE WEEK: Specie: 20-pound Steelhead Where: Secret River Angler: Guest of Gill McKean.

WEATHER: Cloudy. Periods of rain mixed with light snow beginning late this morning. Rainfall amount 5 to 10 mm. Fog patches dissipating this morning. High plus 5. Sunrise 6:23 AM Sunset 8:44 PM. Today’s yearly average temperatures: Maximum 13 degrees. Minimum 2 degrees.

WEATHER REPORTS VIA TELEPHONE: Terrace 250-635-4192 Kitimat 250-632-7864 Prince Rupert 250-627-1155 Smithers 250-847-1958.

SKEENA RIVER: Is rising and coloured up. Fishing around Terrace is poor but fishing below Terrace should be OK and fishing the clean seams of the tributary rivers is a good idea now.

KALUM RIVER: Is in good shape and is coming up slowly. Good numbers of Steelhead are in the river now. Spring runs of Steelhead should be coming in. Fishing for them with fly or spin tackle works well. Fresh early run Chinook (King) Salmon are expected anytime. We have caught them around mid April.

This is a Classified River year round and can be guided from March 15 through October 15 only. The Steelhead record is 32-pounds. To see a photo of this fish cast to: http://noelgyger.ca/records/Record003.jpg The angler is Dennis Therrien.

ZYMOETZ (COPPER) RIVER: Is very dirty (copper colour). The upper section is closed to angling as of December 31 but the lower section below the first canyon is open.

Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters.

KITIMAT RIVER: The Steelheading on the Kitimat River is starting to get really good with one outstanding fish to report!

Rob Brice landed a 14lb steelhead on the Kitimat River on April 12th. Rob was fishing with his fishing partner Cal Tant who landed a 'bigger Steelhead than Rob' on April 13th on the upper Kitimat River. Cal said he landed this Steelhead in the first pool below the first wash out. Well Done Rob and Cal!

Another angler who wishes to remain anonymous, as he did in last week's report, hooked four
Steelhead and landed two upriver on April 13th. Both fish were released. I respect his request to remain unnamed and I really appreciate his contribution for this report and my log. 'Anonymous' is a pretty long title so I will respectfully refer to him as 'Mr. G'. Congratulations 'Mr. G.' on a great morning of fishing and Thank You for the info.

The info provided to me by anglers helps to identify the strength of the run as well timing of this year's Steelhead run. I also respect that not all anglers especially Steelheaders wish to reveal their favorite fishing holes and I will not reveal them if requested not to do so. The catch information is very important to me for my log and this report.

Duane Teneycke another avid local Steelheader reports landing a 15lb wild Buck on April 14th from the mid Kitimat section.

Last but not least! John Heinonkari caught a Big, Wild, Steelhead pushing 30lbs on the Kitimat River, Saturday April 11th. John said, 'I'm 44 years old and this was the Biggest Steelhead of my life. I have fished the Kitimat Area since the early 70's with my father for over 39 years. This fish was at least 28lb maybe 30; this was the biggest Steelhead of my life!” John caught hundreds of Steelhead over the years. John possesses a quiet almost humble personality and has landed five or six Steelhead over twenty pounds on the Kitimat River. This was the first one that was pushing thirty. Well Done John!

I first heard the news of John landing this Huge Steelhead from local residents, Markus Feldoff and Jody Dennil who were in our tackle store. I have known John for thirty years as we both grew up fishing in Kitimat and I am extremely happy for him. It was like receiving news of someone that you know winning the lottery. In the fishing world landing a Steelhead pushing thirty pounds is like winning the lottery!

When I called John to share the moment, the sense of his accomplishment and excitement was prevalent in our conversation but John seemed almost humbled by the experience. That is the way John is. John did not get a picture as he did not have his camera but says, 'that the memory of this fish will forever be etched in his brain'. Congratulations John!

I don't want to detract anything from John’s accomplishments but it is too bad that he didn't get a picture especially now that every cell phone has a camera. A reminder to all Steelheaders, please remember to pack your camera or use your cell or make sure that your partner has his or her camera. 'The fish of your life' may be on your next cast!

Anyone interested in a Guided Trip on the Kitimat River for Steelhead with Reliable Guide and Charters please contact Noel noel@noelgyger.ca and he would be more than happy to accommodate.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: There are not a lot of boats fishing the Douglas Channel this week. The boats that are heading out are mostly crabbing and prawning. Tom Blake a local angler reports catching lots of crab and lots of octopus in his prawn traps. Octopus is great bait for bottom fishing but I would rather eat prawns. Tom did also report that he landed a 12lb feeder Chinook this week. As the weather improves, more Salt water anglers and Charters will be heading out.

Fishing Report from: Gill McKean of Westcoast Fishing Adventures

Hello Noel, Me again. We have been very busy getting our guests hooked up to Trophy steelhead!

This spring has been a little crazy weather wise. It has challenged us every day. We have had sunny weather most of this week but the cool nights have kept the snow melt at bay! The boat ramps have been interesting to say the least but with good equipment and a little steelhead book camp training we are getting the job done!! All guests are hooking good numbers of steelhead on the fly indicator method and swinging a leech or sculpin pattern is getting it done. The fish have been aggressive and strong, there has been the odd colored fish but most have been chrome bright and BIG!! Average catch per day has been 3 to 4 fish per angler with the odd day in the double digits.

All Region 6 rivers are starting to fish well now and it’s only getting better!

We still have a few last minute openings for 1 or 2 persons just call Noel 250-635-2568 noel@noelgyger.ca and he will hook you up.

Special thanks to Todd Haynes for the video clip and the photo (see below) of Splash Gordon doing what he does best… hook you up!!

Gill McKean, Fishing is our addiction - Guiding is our passion - Adventure is in our blood

Fishing Report from: Todd Haynes of Nautical West Sport Fishing – April 17th

The Kitimat River is in fantastic condition this week and the weather is just as good for fishing.

We have seen an increase in catches this past week as well as an increase in the number of fishers throughout the river system. Guiding is in full swing now and most are having several fish successes on both fly and conventional gear.

I managed to get some great video footage and a few photos yesterday of Gord McKean and his guests from Alaska.

Spring Chinook fishing is coming soon! Nautical West has dates available for both the Kitimat River and ocean charters. Contact Noel Gyger noel@noelgyger.ca for complete information.

Fishing Report from: Tracey Hittel of Steelhead Heaven

Hi Noel, here is a photo and caption: 12 year old Jake with his first Kitimat River Steelhead, fishing conditions are awesome, the catching is a bit slow, with the rain and a drop in level we will get an excellent last week in April. Thanks Tracey Hittel

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated April 5 – April 12, 2009

Dear Fishing Friends:

SUMMARY: The weather has been good all week with daytime temperatures near normal. The snow pack is starting to melt and the rivers are on the rise. The Steelhead that were holding in deep dark pools are on the move again. Both upper and lower sections of Kalum River are in good shape even though the water is rising. The Zymoetz (Copper) River is very dirty (copper colour) right now and is coloring up the Skeena River also. The main stem Skeena River, below Terrace and above the Zymoetz River is clean enough to fish for Steelhead. A good run of spring Steelhead should be coming in now. Good runs of Steelhead are coming into the many isolated coastal streams and rivers. For the Kitimat River and Douglas Channel please check out the Ron Wakita report below. There are lots of New! items posted on the website this week, please see below.

We don’t sport fish for Herring but I am happy to report commercial Herring fishery out of Prince Rupert was up this year and slightly higher than average. The roe was of good quality and fish were bigger than in recent years. Lots of Herring usually means lots of Salmon.

NOTICE There is a logjam below the highway riprap just above Nalabila Creek. Can barely make it through with a pontoon boat, attempting it with a drift boat would be dangerous. See two photos below:

Friends of Wild Salmon urge you to send a letter now calling for a public inquiry on the proposed Enbridge project to build a supertanker port at Kitimat and two 1,150 km pipelines to Alberta. Cast here to send letter: http://org2.democracyinaction.org/o/5875/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=1227

Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters.

KITIMAT RIVER: Easter week has been productive for Steelheaders on the Kitimat River. We received some high tides this week combined with a bump up in the river water level enticed some chrome Steelhead into the Kitimat River. I spoke to a French speaking angler Tommy on Wednesday, who had hooked four steelhead and landed two. Tommy was fishing the lower Kitimat. I spoke to another angler in our tackle store who wished to remain unnamed, who landed a Steelhead on Tuesday and another on Wednesday upriver. On Thursday I spoke to Kevin whose friend from Vernon landed a Steelhead fishing the Cable Car run. Kevin also said that they watched another angler land a big bright female on the other side of the river. This angler was drifting in a pontoon boat and put this wild Steelhead into a black tube and continued on. I explained that the angler was probably one of the Kitimat Hatchery brood collection crew collecting brood stock. The Kitimat Hatchery is looking for volunteers who are interested in assisting with Steelhead brood collection. Any interested anglers please contact me via email wakita@telus.net and I will explain the program and give you the Hatchery contact info. There is a strict protocol to be followed but it is a worthwhile project.

Mike Herzberg of Reliable Guide and Charters fished with his fishing partner on Thursday and Friday. Mike landed a 15lb. buck on Thursday and his fishing partner hooked four Steelhead and landed three on Friday. Mike also warns of a log jam located just below Saw Mill. Anglers drifting the Kitimat River please beware. Mike advises that pontoons with due caution are able to navigate through. High water may also increase the hazard. Thank You for the pictures and the advisory Mike.
.
Overall the Steelheading was very good this week with fresh, bright Steelhead in the system. There should be more Steelheaders fishing the Kitimat River this Easter long weekend. Stay Tuned to this report for further updates.

This is the logjam below the highway riprap just above Nalabila Creek. Can barely make it through with a pontoon boat, attempting it with a drift boat would be dangerous. Someone needs to get in there with a power saw to open it up. Photos by Mike Herzberg.

Anyone interested in a Guided Trip on the Kitimat River for Steelhead with Reliable Guide and Charters please contact Noel noel@noelgyger.ca and he would be more than happy to accommodate.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: Albert Nelson a resident of Kitimaat Village reports large schools of herring spawning in the Kitimat harbour especially in front of the Village. With the herring schooled up along the beach and with some strong winds creating some larger waves, the herring are being washed up onto the beach during the High tides. 'My brother picked up three buckets of herring right off the soccer field' said Arnold. The Kitimaat Village soccer fields are located along the shore line and with the abnormally high tides this week and high waves has created this phenomenon. Albert was in our tackle store buying herring jigs to catch the herring and was looking for a bucket for when the winds picked up again. Wow! This is first time I have heard of this happening and I was born and raised in Kitimat.

With the herring in the Kitimat Harbour, smart money says that there should be some feeder chinook in the Kitimat Harbour feeding on the herring. Many boaters were heading out for the weekend. Upon their return I will update this report. Stay Tuned.

The early indicators of the Herring run are that it is very strong this year. Herring bait fishers have reported good catches as have the commercial herring boats. This may be good signs of things to come with this season's Salmon runs. Usually when the herring run is strong the salmon returns are also very strong. Here's to a 'Great Salmon Fishing Season'

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated March 29 – April 5, 2009

Dear Fishing Friends:

SUMMARY: The weather has been fair all week. The most important thing is the temperatures are getting warmer and the water is rising. Trouble is the water is rising slowly and is still too low for jet boats but rafts and drift boats are doing OK. Fish guiding has started “big time”. The guides are working very hard to get their clients the best guided fishing experience possible despite conditions. With the current low water this has been a challenge. Despite conditions, pro guide Tracey Hittel has gotten his clients into many Steelhead. See his full report below. Both upper and lower sections of Kalum River are in good shape but the water is very low. The lower Zymoetz (Copper) River is still holding a few Steelhead and a few fresh ones are coming in now. I have a report of a few fish being caught on the fly rod and spin gear. Most of the ice that was floating in the river has melted. A few fishermen are now starting to fish on the main stem Skeena River looking for that spring run Steelhead. In the meantime lots of Cutthroat and Dolly Varden Char to keep the fishermen entertained while waiting for Steelhead. For the Kitimat River and Douglas Channel please check out the Ron Wakita report below.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) 2009 Salmon Stock Outlook:

Skeena Region:

• Sockeye: variable 2 million fish expected
• Chinook: variable; average returns similar to recent years are anticipated
• Coho: outlook is good for the middle and upper Skeena stocks. Outlook for lower Skeena trib is less certain.

FISHING GUIDE REPORTS FOR THIS WEEK ARE FROM:

Ron Wakita

FISHING THIS WEEK: FAIR

LARGEST FISH OF THE WEEK: Specie: 15-pound Steelhead Where: Kitimat River Angler: Jesse Houston.

WEATHER: Cloudy. Periods of rain near Stewart. 60 percent chance of showers this afternoon. High 8. Sunrise 6:56 AM Sunset 8:18 PM. Today’s yearly average temperatures: Maximum 11 degrees. Minimum 0.7 degrees.

WEATHER REPORTS VIA TELEPHONE: Terrace 250-635-4192 Kitimat 250-632-7864 Prince Rupert 250-627-1155 Smithers 250-847-1958.

SKEENA RIVER: Is in good shape, low and clean but still frozen over in spots. Be very careful walking on those ice shelves. Should be a few Steelhead and Trout one can catch.

KALUM RIVER: Is in good shape. Good numbers of Steelhead are in the river now. Fishing for them with fly or spin tackle works well. The water is extremely low and the fish are easily spooked. Walking around is getting a little easier as a lot of the snow has melted. The boat ramps are getting easier to access.

This is a Classified River year round and can be guided from March 15 through October 15 only. The Steelhead record is 32-pounds. To see a photo of this fish cast to: http://noelgyger.ca/records/Record003.jpg The angler is Dennis Therrien.

ZYMOETZ (COPPER) RIVER: Is fishing well for Steelhead right now. The upper section is closed to angling as of December 31 but the lower section below the first canyon will stay open for the winter Steelheaders to enjoy.

Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters.

KITIMAT RIVER: We received sunny weather most days this week except April 1st. April Fools Day morning received another snowfall. Mother Nature has a warped sense of humor but she was only kidding because most of the snow melted away by noon.

In addition to the snow on Wednesday morning, April 1st was the first day that Fresh Water Licenses had to be obtained online. With every dealer in the province logging on to the government server at the same time overloaded the system. Long delays, constant error messages and inability to print licenses were an exercise in frustration at our Tackle Store as well as for anyone else trying to obtain a Fresh Water License. We had better success after hours. Anyone wishing to obtain their Fishing License please be patient and allow plenty of time. Please, for your own sanity, do not leave it until the last minute.

Despite the snow and the difficulty with Fresh Water Licenses, Steelhead fishing on the Kitimat River picked up a bit this week. Jesse Houston an employee of our Tackle Store caught another Steelhead on Tuesday. He was fishing with one of his fishing partners, Tom Keohane and his brother Kodi Houston and they both lost a Steelhead. They were fishing on the Island across from the Kitimat Hatchery and they were all using the Bubble Gum Pink worm.

I spoke to two other anglers in the store on Tuesday who fished the gravel bar below the Kitimat Hatchery and they also lost a Steelhead. Wally from Spey Lodge was in the store on Wednesday after he drifted the Kitimat and he landed a Steelhead. Todd Haynes of Nautical West Fishing Adventures also drifted and reports landing two Steelhead. Another angler reports having landing three Steelhead already this season.

Many other anglers are planning to head out fishing the Kitimat River this weekend and the warm temperatures should help. The Kitimat River water level remains very low and a little snow melt would help. In the North West a person has to be careful what he wishes for. A little rise in the water level would be nice but we received a substantial snow pack in the mountains this winter and too much warm weather would not be good either. I would hope that the snow melt is gradual and the river remains fishable throughout the snow melt which is more typical on the Kitimat. The Steelhead fishing will continue to get better as usually Easter weekend is when Steelheading usually starts to get really good.

The water level is too low to drift with driftboats and most anglers that are drifting are doing so with pontoon boats or inflatables.

Anyone interested in a Guided Trip on the Kitimat River for Steelhead with Reliable Guide and Charters please Noel Gyger noel@noelgyger.ca and he would be more than happy to accommodate.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: Crabbing is the main focus with many boaters. We have not received any more reports of King crab since we reported Rick Taylor's catch in last week's report. Dungeness crab is the target especially since it has been a long winter and fresh crab has not been on the menu.

Most boaters are just starting to get their boats ready for this years fishing season. I spoke to many boaters who are planning Halibut trips for Easter weekend.

Anglers are reminded that the new 2009 to 2011 Tidal Synopsis are available. Tidal Water licenses are still being issued on paper with no delays. Sometimes the proven but true methods are still the best way of doing things especially with fishing.

Fishing Report from: Tracey Hittel of Steelhead Heaven
Spring Steelhead Report from Steelhead Heaven BC Canada 2009
We started week 1 of our guiding season with a bang as our clients from Vancouver landed some very large Steelhead this weekend. Rod Toth of Bent Rods showed us that his jigs are the top producers when it comes to fishing for Steelhead. Rod landed a 21.4lb Steelhead, a 19.5lb Steelhead and a 17lb Steelhead not to mention other small males and fresh females arriving from the sea.
Rod felt very confident in his jigs and the nice thing is that they are all made in the lower mainland by his family and friends. When you tie thousands of these every year you need extra help. Rod fished different varieties of jigs with his float, centre-pin reel and 13.5 ft rod, his magic colors were pink, green and olive. We concentrated on the deep pools some as deep as 19.5ft, yes! And this was where the big boys were holding.
His fishing partner for the trip was Wes the Bass Pro Master, well versed in Eastern Canada Steelhead. This young lad was as organized as any fisherman I have ever guided. His style and technique was flawless and a great tip I learned was that the guys would use fly floatant on the line approx 25ft of it, to ensure the dead drift they wanted to present in the water was always there, with little or no drag on the surface of the water. Wes tied the most amazing Tarentino bags, as he calls them to keep his secrets close to his chest, moms the word with me. Wes hooked some large males during the trip and some he landed and some were long line releases. One of the fish Wes landed had sea lice on it so that day we did catch a lot of fresh chrome hen Steelhead.
Spoonman and Billy Bob were partnered with Bark Bark, these guys hooked some very nice Steelhead and Spoonman fished with the metal his entire trip and fished some of the nicest spoons, all special ordered and in various weights and size. Billy Bob is pictured with one of the chromers the guys landed that day, a fresh run for sure.
With the spring melt soon to happen, we fished very cold water conditions at 36F and some of the lowest river levels all year. As April arrives and the sun melts the snow off the mountains we should get a nice bump in water levels and a push of fresh Steelhead, so anglers can expect some excellent conditions in the next week.
I still have a few dates open, please contact Noel Gyger noel@noelgyger.ca to book them. Thanks. Tracey Hittel

AREA RIVER RECORDS: Chinook Salmon: Skeena River, 92.5-pounds; Kalum River, 85-pounds; Kitimat River, 74-pounds; Steelhead: Skeena River, 45-pounds; Coho Salmon: Skeena River, 27-pounds.

Full report from Troy Adams and his fishing buddy Whitey:

Hi Noel, already spring how time flies. Well I had not gotten a chance to tell you about my fall trip last year, the one where Whitey and I spoiled ourselves to 14 days straight on the river with Andrew at the Kalum River Lodge. I can tell you the conditions were changing daily, it was beautiful one day and then 3 days and nights of rain, then rain and wind, and overcast then nice again. But we had an unbelievable trip, the river went up 2ft. and we watched large trees wash off the cut banks into the river while we caught fish every day. The weather doesn't affect you when the fishing is so good. We honesty landed at least 10 fish each a day. There was 3 days I landed 5 Steelhead myself; I set my new personal best 23.5lb. Steelhead, 30lb. Skeena River Chum, 14lb. sockeye. We took on numerous Coho’s in the high teens and as usual we still lost more fish than we caught. I took over 227 pictures, had a moose swim through the run, a deer swim by, saw bear, beaver, eagles, and every day was a new adventure. Even with adverse conditions Andrew was able to get us good fly water every day, that is where 20 years on the river and the ability to read the water really pays off, no need to say that we are already signed up for this year. You know I could go on and on but I will save it till we come up and I'll get Andrew to bring you out with us for a day or two of fishing. I will include a picture of Whitey and Andrew with a Skeena River sea lice covered Steelhead that will test backing that you don't know you have. By the way last night I went to the Fly Fishing Film Tour, and it had a lot of good fishing clips of all over, including B.C. Dry fly and wet fly for Steelhead, but one film is on northern California, where I live called Rivers of a Lost Coast about the beginning of fly fishing plus rise and fall of the Salmon and Steelhead fishery with commentary by people like Lani Waller and Jim Adams, whom you know to also be very familiar with the Skeena and her tributaries, one of the last great rivers with no dams or hatcheries, maybe check out the clip on the web it is also an interesting look at what happens to unprotected watersheds, you can also see more on the film tours web site. I am sure everyone up there is lining up rod's and getting ready for those Huge Spring Steelhead, so stay warm and we will talk soon, thanks’ Troy Adams

Catch & Release formula:

- Chinook: girth squared x length x 1.54 divided by 1000 (inches)
- Steelhead: girth squared x length x 1.33 divided by 1000 (inches)

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated March 22 – March 29, 2009

Dear Fishing Friends:

SUMMARY: The weather has been fair all week. Maybe spring is finally getting a grip on itself. The spring melt-off on the mountains has not started yet. Despite the low water conditions the “best” fishing guides are doing quite well for their clients. The Tracey Hittel report below is outstanding. Both upper and lower sections of Kalum River are in good shape and water is very low, almost too low for jet boats so its drift boat and raft time. The lower Zymoetz (Copper) River is still holding a few Steelhead and a few fresh ones are coming in now. I have a report of a few fish being caught on the fly rod.

LARGEST FISH OF THE WEEK: Specie: 24.3-pound Steelhead. Angler: Client of Tracey Hittel Where: Kalum River

WEATHER: Cloudy. A few flurries over northern sections early this morning. 40 percent chance of rain showers or flurries this afternoon. High plus 4. Sunrise 7:14 AM Sunset 8:04 PM. Today’s yearly average temperatures: Maximum 10 degrees. Minimum 0 degrees.

The spots that are open can have some drifting ice.

KITIMAT RIVER: 'Mission Accomplished'!. Jesse Houston and Ariel Kuppers have been on a mission for the past three weeks to catch a steelhead and it happened for Jesse on Tuesday. Jesse landed his first Steelhead of the year March 25th which Ariel estimated to be about 16lbs. (See Photo of the Week - above) 'Jesse caught one last year on March 25th' said Ariel, 'Same date this year'. They also hooked 11 trout and 7 landed the same day. They landed three of the trout on a fly, the muddler minnow with a silver tinsel body.

Many other anglers have been reporting similar results for trout but Jesse's Steelhead was the only one we recorded this week. Many trout fishermen commented that they were catching trout in runs that they had fished numerous times this winter but this week these same runs produced fish. I am a strong believer that the temperature of the water has a major influence on the fishing results for Trout and Steelhead. With the warmer temperatures we received all week and the Kitimat River was a lot more productive. Since the news of Jesse's Steelhead and the pictures circulating, more anglers are planning to be out on the Kitimat River this weekend. The Kitimat River is very low and anglers are able to walk and wade most portions of the entire river. The pools and deeper pockets that will be holding fish are clearly defined so anglers should be able to find fish easier. We will soon see! Stay tuned for next week's report. Ron Wakita

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: Rick Taylor caught some King Crab down the channel last weekend! Pretty exciting as these are the first King Crab reported this year. Other boaters were also out catching Dungeness Crab and some boaters were just out test driving their boats after the winter hibernation. We did not receive any reports of any feeder Chinook last weekend. The herring migration seems to be a little erratic this year and accordingly so has the 'Winter Chinook fishery'. It may be a result of 'climate change' or simply the unpredictability of Mother Nature. The forecast is calling for continued warmer temperatures so this may cause a late migration of Winter Springs.

Salt Anglers are reminded that the 2009/2011 Synopsis is now available. Please note that the Halibut quota for Area 6 is one per day with two in possession.

Our tackle store has received numerous requests to clarify these quotas. Please feel free to contact us via email at wakita@telus.net with any questions regarding the Douglas Channel or the Kitimat River.

City Centre Hardware and Sporting Goods (our family owned Tackle Store) is gearing up for the Fishing Season with many new products and In-store specials.

Please click on our logo on Noel Gyger's Homepage www.noelgyger.ca to view our instore flyer.

Reliable Guide and Charters has dates available for Steelheading in April and May. We would be pleased to share the exciting and rewarding experience of fishing for Steelhead. The Kitimat River Steelhead are Hatchery enhanced and is one of the few rivers left where Steelhead may be retained. Most Steelheaders prefer to catch and release but the Kitimat River regulations allow for one hatchery Steelhead to be retained. We also have booking dates available for the Big Chinook both in fresh and saltwater trips. Any interested parties please contact Noel noel@noelgyger.ca

This is an Exciting time of year! Tight Lines!
Sincerely
Ron Wakita

The Bites On Fishing Report for March 29, 2009

Fishing Season is finally here and the weather patterns for the north coast are providing far better conditions for Steelhead / Trout fishermen venturing out on local rivers. Kitimat River is still very low. The snow melt in the higher levels will soon bring a needed rise in water levels and create better fishing conditions throughout the river systems.

A few Steelhead caught over the last week as well as good number of Cutthroats.

Harbor fishing is still slow with only a few early boaters trying to hook up some feeder Chinooks and load up on a feast of Crab.

Nautical West is now taking reservations for the 2009-10 Fishing Season. For complete package information and trip planning tips please contact Noel Gyger

Nautical West Steelhead Dates still open for the Kitimat River May 1, 2, 3, 2009.

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated March 15 – March 22, 2009

Dear Fishing Friends:

SUMMARY: The weather has been fair all week (snow and rain but not too cold) and the Steelhead fishing is good for both spin and fly rods. Fishing pressure is light. Both upper and lower sections of Kalum River are in good shape and water is very low, almost too low for jet boats. Guiding started here on March 15th. The spring melt-off on the mountains has not started yet. The experts say the snow pack is just a little above average. The lower Zymoetz (Copper) River is still holding a few Steelhead and a few fresh ones are coming in now. I have a report of a few fish being caught on the fly rod. Lots of new stuff posted on the website this week.

Please cast here to add your signature to a letter written by Alexandra Morton re fish farm issue: http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?formkey=cEkxX3p3MGFBbWNVVGNVU3lxQnBwQmc6MA.. We need at least 10,000 signatures. Have you signed yet?

Many people book three trips per year to our area; one trip in the spring (March-April-May), one trip in the summer (June-July-August) and one trip in the fall (September-October-November). They love having the same guide but fishing for different fish in different areas.

Be sure to check out my website at www.noelgyger.ca for news bulletins, mid week fishing updates, conservation, my history, quality waters strategy, special guided fishing trips, video clips, podcasts, scenic river photos, wildlife photos and others, comments from past guests, informational articles, archived fishing reports from 1996 through 2002 and a sportfishing market place. I hope it meets with your entire satisfaction. I am at your service.

CURRENT REPORT and summary for Skeena and Tributaries:

TYPE OF FISH CAUGHT: Steelhead and Trout for river. Salmon, Halibut, Bottom Fish and Dungeness Crab for ocean.

Thank you for using barbless hooks.

FISHING THIS WEEK: FAIR

LARGEST FISH OF THE WEEK: Specie: Angler: Where: (none reported this week)

WEATHER: Cloudy with sunny periods. 40 percent chance of flurries this morning and early this afternoon. High plus 5. Sunrise 7:31 AM Sunset 7:51 PM. Today’s yearly average temperatures: Maximum 9 degrees. Minimum 0 degrees.

The spots that are open can have some drifting ice.

KITIMAT RIVER: March 21st is supposed to be the first day of Spring but the snow continues to fall in the Kitimat area. Earlier this week the afternoon sun had warmed up the temperature and with the blue skies we started to sense the feeling of Spring but light snowfalls interrupted the transition of seasons.

Last weekend Donny Webber and his fishing partner caught 'a bunch of trout in Nalabila Creek'. Actually this stretch of water is no longer Nalabila Creek. With the change in the river flow it is now the main stem of the Kitimat River. I have heard it referred to as 'Nalabila Arm'
More anglers are starting to venture out. During the week trout fishing was spotty despite the increased traffic. There were no Steelhead reported this week, I suspect the colder temperatures may have had an influence. The river conditions are really good as the water level is low and clear but the water temperature remains low. Sometimes fishing is better in the warm of the afternoon sun, a couple degrees warmer can increase activity of the fish.

We were all hoping that the Steelheading would start earlier this year and after the first couple of Steelhead were reported everyone got ``fired up``. No Steelhead to report this week but we endeavor to report the results as accurately as they are and not what we hope them to be.
Stay tuned

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: Very few boats are venturing out to fish for Feeder Chinook although the herring have been reported in the Kitimat Harbour. I spoke to one boater who went out crabbing and caught his limit of Dungeness crab but he didn't set up any rods for trolling.
I spoke to Wes Owens and a couple of other boaters who were planning to get out trolling this weekend so hopefully we will have some results to report shortly.

Until next week…Tight lines. Ron Wakita

Fishing Report from: Todd Haynes of Nautical West Adventures

The Bites On Fishing Report with Nautical West Sport Fishing: for week of March 22, 2009

Hi Noel, This week has brought some new hope for us in Northern British Columbia as the temps have been slowly on the increase and the weather patterns are gradually starting to change.

I spoke with a few steelhead fishermen this week in Terrace and in Kitimat and fishing is still slow with better results in the Kalum River thus far. The Kitimat River is starting to see an increase in number of local fishermen putting in time with hopes of hooking a few of the early running Steelhead. Cutthroat numbers are showing in the lower sections as these fish are feeding on fry coming downstream.

This time of year can be very exciting hooking into numerous catches of cutthroat on a dry line and minnow pattern. As temperatures start to rise over the next couple of weeks we will be seeing far better fishing conditions and of course an increase of Steelhead entering the system.

The Kitimat Harbor has been slow with only a few winter feeders being caught. A good time to do some crab fishing and lay out a few prawn traps.

Nautical West is gearing up for our season right now and prepping the vessels for launch here in the first weeks of April.

Cheers,
Todd Haynes,
Nautical West Sport Fishing

Nautical West Steelhead Dates still open for the Kitimat River May 1, 2, 3, 2009

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated March 8 – March 15, 2009

Dear Fishing Friends:

SUMMARY: The weather has been pretty good all week. Guiding on the Kalum River has started as of today, March 15th. The guides and their clients should be really happy as the water is in excellent shape there are lots of Steelhead in the river now. Both fly and spin methods should work well. The lower Zymoetz (Copper) River is open to Steelhead fishing. For the Kitimat River and Douglas Channel please check out the Ron Wakita report below. Lots of new stuff posted on the website this week.

Our rivers, oceans and our fish are in peril. Our governments, Federal and Provincial, are very slow to react to protect them therefore we need to take action ourselves whenever we can.

I usually don’t comment on the conservation items posted as they speak for themselves but I am alarmed that there are three postings this week! I really hope you all can find the time to read them all. I would like to draw to your attention to one particular posting. Please cast here http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?formkey=cEkxX3p3MGFBbWNVVGNVU3lxQnBwQmc6MA.. and add your name to a wild Salmon petition presented by Alexandra Morton…then…please forward this link to all on your e-mail lists. Alex/we needs at least 5000 signatures.

Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters.

KITIMAT RIVER: The winter weather continues as we received hefty snowfalls on Wednesday and Thursday night. We usually don't have to shovel our driveways in March but this year snow continues to fall and we continue to shovel. Such is life in the North West.

Despite the snowfalls in the middle of the week Ariel Kuppers and Jesse Houston were out fishing for Steelhead on the Kitimat River. Jesse lost a Steelhead last week when they were fishing for trout so they geared up this week with Steelhead tackle. This week while fishing for Steelhead Jesse landed two Cutthroat Trout. They didn't catch the Steelhead they were looking for this week but at least they caught the trout they were looking for last week.

Ariel was a little 'pumped up' to catch Steelhead because he was talking to a biologist in
our tackle store. This biologist who is conducting a Eulachon study on the Kitimat was netting the lower river for Eulachon when he caught a bright, chrome 18lb. Steelhead in his net. After hearing this biologist describing this beautiful Steelhead Ariel was pretty 'pumped' and so was I. Only people that fish can relate to the emotions of the hardcore angler. Such is life in the North West.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: I was speaking to Bill (sorry I forgot his last name) who caught two feeder Chinook last weekend in the Kitimat Harbour. 'I caught them right in front of MK Marina' said Bill who appeared pretty proud of his catch. 'I caught them on the Old Stand-by Lure? Bill said pausing for me to guess. I responded, 'With Luhr Jensen's Tom Mack #5 50/50' (which is half chrome and half brass). Bill said, 'No I was using a Tom Mack #5 straight chrome'. I corrected him stating that the Old Stand-by was the Tom Mack #5 50/50 and that the Tom Mack #5 chrome was the Old Stand-by's twin brother. He insisted that the chrome was the 'Old Stand-by'. Only anglers can get into a debate over specific details of which lure is better or which specific fishing holes are better, or which boat is better, or which rod and so on. Most debates among anglers are seldom settled. My official scoring on this issue is that the Tom Mack #5 50/50 is the 'Old Stand-by' but the Tom Mack #5 chrome was the lure on record for Bill's catch last weekend. Congratulations on your catch Bill. Such is life in the North West.

Only in the North West can we scan back through the pictures on our digital cameras and view pictures of the activities we have enjoyed in all the different seasons. We can view pictures of Ice fishing in Onion Lake or Lakesle Lake. Winter Steelheading on the Copper River or the Kalum. Snowboarding, Snowmobiling, Skiing, Hockey or Trolling for Winter Chinook. We can scroll further back into the fall we may have pictures of Hunting, Coho fishing, Hiking, Mushroom picking, High School Volleyball, Basketball or Curling or crabbing. Scroll back into the summer pictures of Noel Gyger, Chinook, camping, Pinks, Chum, Summer Run Steelhead, Graduation and so on. Spring pictures may include Steelheading on the Kitimat, Gardening, Bottom Fishing, Steelhead or Chinook fishing on the Kalum, Spring Bear Hunting, Golfing or hiking.
Here are a few pictures from my camera. Such is life in the North West. We are truly blessed. Until next week…Tight lines. Ron Wakita

With the current exchange rate it will now cost $2732.13 in United States Dollars. A savings of $767.87 (most so far this year) I would suggest you BOOK NOW before exchange rates go the other way. Cast here for current money conversion rates. Contact me anytime for package details.

Many people book three trips per year to our area; one trip in the spring (March-April-May), one trip in the summer (June-July-August) and one trip in the fall (September-October-November). They love having the same guide but fishing for different fish in different areas.

Be sure to check out my website at www.noelgyger.ca for news bulletins, mid week fishing updates, conservation, my history, quality waters strategy, special guided fishing trips, video clips, scenic river photos, wildlife photos and others, comments from past guests, informational articles, archived fishing reports from 1996 through 2002 and a sportfishing market place. I hope it meets with your entire satisfaction.

WEATHER: Clearing this morning. Windy. High minus 1. Wind chill minus 17 this morning. Sunrise 8:06 AM Sunset 7:24 PM. Today’s yearly average temperatures: Maximum 6 degrees. Minimum -1 degrees.

WEATHER REPORTS VIA TELEPHONE: Environment Canada taped messages constantly updated, giving current conditions and three-day forecasts. Terrace 250-635-4192 Kitimat 250-632-7864 Prince Rupert 250-627-1155 Smithers 250-847-1958.

SKEENA RIVER: Is in good shape, low and clean but still frozen over in spots. Be very careful walking on those ice shelves. The spots that are open can have some drifting ice.

KITIMAT RIVER: We are still receiving the odd snowfalls. There has not been enough snow that temperatures have been warmer, in fact during most afternoons this week the sun has come out requires shoveling but enough to remind us that it is still winter. Despite the snow the and created some very nice days to be out fishing.

Trout fishing on the Kitimat continues to be good especially during the warmth of the afternoon sun. A local fly fisherman was talking to Ariel Kuppers in our tackle store said that he landed ten trout on minnow patterns in Hirsch Creek.

Ariel and another staff member of our tackle store, Jesse Houston went out fishing on Wednesday and Jesse hooked but lost a Steelhead.

We received another report earlier this week of another steelhead landed although this info was second or third hand. News of the odd steelhead being hooked has tweaked some excitement and has caused a few anglers to start organizing their tackle. We have some in-store specials to help start the season. Please click here or on the Home Hardware logo on Noel’s website www.noelgyger.ca if you wish to view our in-store flyer.

Steelheading on the Kitimat usually starts later into March and will get better every day especially if the temperature continues to get warmer. The challenge for this year's season will be searching for new hot spots as there have been significant changes to the river over the winter. Anglers should beware during the first few drifts to be on the watch for these major changes. The most significant change is in the Sawmill to Nalabila area. We will report other changes as they become more exposed as the snow melts.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: There was only one twelve pound feeder chinook reported early in the week. There have been increasing numbers of Sea Gulls, Seals and Sea Lions sighted in the harbour. These are signs that the herring are starting to migrate into the harbour to spawn. When herring come into harbour usually feeder chinook follow and the Kitimat Harbour winter chinook fishery should pick up. I spoke to Wes Owens and some other boaters who were planning to fish this weekend but we have no results to report at this time. Stay tuned to this report for updates. Good luck to all, Ron Wakita

Hello Anglers, I hope this newsletter finds you all doing well and pursuing your fishing addictions with rod and reel. Though there are a variety of reasons why, I must unfortunately report that my fishing adventures have been much too few and far between. This would, in all likelihood, explain why I've been experiencing this nagging twitch every now and again - cabin fever is certainly getting the best of me! Kidding aside, my lack of fishing has translated into some much needed time at my fly tying vise, and dreaming of those picture perfect days on the river. A day where I can feel the warmth of the sun as it rises over the mountain peaks, and sense my homemade Intruder fly, most likely the fishy two-tone pink colour that worked so well last Fall, as it swims its way through the deep slot in front of me. The tug of a Winter Steelhead -whether it's the smashing grab of an aggressive buck, or a simple tightening of the line- is one that I think of often, but do not necessarily need for a successful day on the river. Simply spending time on the water on one's favourite run, making long, graceful casts to the far bank, and smelling a forest coming to life after a long, cold winter are some of the other great experiences that Steelhead fishing offers. Witnessing the sound of a reel as it screams in protest under the pull of a strong fish, and admiring a chrome bright fish brought to hand isn't all that bad either...
Thankfully, Winter seems to be loosening its grip in the Lower Skeena valley, giving way to warmer Spring conditions. Though it's still possible to get those rogue snowstorms in this part of the country as late as early April, the general trend is for warming temperatures and longer daylight hours. Translation: better Steelhead fishing conditions. After a long, cold winter, water temperatures are just a few degrees above freezing and Steelhead can be very sluggish on the Skeena and its tributaries, but as these temperatures increase, so too does the activity of Steelhead.
So, based on the present conditions, what do I anticipate for the early season? Because the Spring season through late March and early May sees some of the most reliable, consistent water flows over the course of the Steelheader’s year, and the bulk of the Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring run fish are holding in classic runs and pools, I expect the fishing to be good. On our favorite local river, in most cases, we don't have to guess whether there are Steelhead in a particular run, or not. We know they're there. It just depends on the mood of the fish that day, and if you have the fly or lure that that particular Steelhead wants. Moreover, reports from regional biologists have suggested that when a river's Summer and Fall Steelhead runs are strong, this often correlates with Winter and Spring run fish as well. Given that the 2008 Steelhead run was one of the better ones in the last 5 years suggests that this Spring should provide reliable fishing.
Plus, the last few days that our guides have been out fishing could best be described as 'epic.' Sky Richard and Cam Thiessen floated a wilderness river a few weeks ago using pontoon boats and Abel crafts, which enabled them to reach waters seldom fished this Winter, and the results were worth the extra effort. Cam landed 3 Steelhead, ranging from chrome bright to lightly coloured, and Sky landed 6 of the 10 Steelhead he hooked. A week later, Dustin landed 2 Steelhead out of the 4 he hooked in a mere 3 hours of spey fishing. One was a smaller hen of 7-8 lbs, and the second of the two bright fish were 14 lbs. With water conditions only improving as we approach our March 22 Spring opener, we look forward to another great season ahead as we provide the very best in guided fishing adventures in Northwestern BC.
Until next week, tight lines and screaming reels…Chad Black
Fishing Report from: Gill McKean of Westcoast Fishing adventures

Hello Noel, Mandi and I were out on the Kitimat yesterday just checking out all the changes mother nature has made to “HER” river. It is really something how the river can move. It was a very nice day with a spring like feel to it. The water was a little low but fishable, was nice just to get out and wet a line. We did not have a touch however it was more a walk down a new section of water just doing my homework for the guests that are showing up this spring.

I am looking forward to the start of a new season!

Will have photos of chrome steelhead soon ...
