IN GENERAL: The 80 degree blue water is still just off the beach and the fishing for sailfish this last week has been excellent. This should slow down a bit with the first few days of the new week, and then pick up again as the full moon declines.

Most boats are raising 7 to 9 fish a day and averaging about three released fish on conventional gear. First time fly-fishing client, John Mienstra of New Jersey, fished with me and Captain Mecate on the “Aqua Azul.” We raised 8 fish. I was able to tease four to the boat, and John hooked three. Unfortunately, he made most of the beginner’s mistakes – like after setting the hook, he continued holding onto the line while the fish was trying to run, etc. But, he did manage to release one fish.

Dorado are definitely around, but are mostly incidental catches as we troll for the sails. The boats are averaging about one dorado a day each.

The inshore action is still holding up for roosters and jacks, with a few sierra thrown in.

Our Sails and Tails Sailfish on the Fly Tournament will begin on the 3rd and it should put our participants right in the thick of the bite.

Ed Kunze reported in by telephone this morning since his computer crashed. Here is his abbreviated report; as predicted, this week produced some excellent sailfish opportunities and the good news is they are very close to the beach. Only a short two miles and you are in the thick of things. Boats are averaging half-dozen shots a day.

IN GENERAL: The 82º blue water has moved out this week and slowed the offshore fishing considerably. Yesterday (Fri.), fishing with Martin on the panga “Isamar,” Andrew Veit and his wife from Denver and I found the blue water at 18 miles. At 21 miles, we only raised two fish all day, but I got one to come to the boat. It was Andrew's first time for sailfish on the fly, and even though he had to make two tries for the sail, he was able to get a hookup. The sailfish did a few spectacular leaps, and was on for almost two minutes before it threw the hook for a long release.
Talking to Captain Margarito on the radio through the course of the day, he picked up two sails at the 18 miles mark and very late in the day, another two at 26 miles. He told me the 26 mile area was holding a tremendous amount of fish, but he had to head back before he had a chance to fish it well. His fish were taken on conventional gear, but I am heading directly to the 26 mile mark today with Baja on the Fly fly-fishing client Jimmy Evans and Captain Chiquis on the “Intrza.”
The great roosterfish action and inshore for jack crevalle and sierras is still holding up.

A solid week of good weather and a slight upswing in angling activity set the stage for a good start to this year's fall fishing season. Most of the boats have gone through their annual maintenance schedules and are ready to go. Newest addition to our fleet, The Sirena with captain Alex posted some very good numbers for this week. Alaska angler Larry Bravo who was a die-hard Cabo fan, Landed 2 big SAILFISH 1 DORADO, 5 BONITOS and a monster WAHOO in day offshore aboard the SIRENA. Mexico City anglers Ruben and Arturo Meneses also fishing aboard the Sirena landed 4 SAILFISH,
(2 released ) and 1 big DORADO in 5 hours of fishing. Sandy Thompson from London England also fishing with Captain Alex 4 SAILFISH ( 2 released ) 1 DORADO, 2 BINOTOS and 2 YELLOWTAIL Jacks in on 5 hour period and still had time left in her day to enjoy some great snorkeling and a fresh fish barbque at Ixtapa Island. Returning anglers Vernon Tull fishing aboard the Janeth landed 2 SAILFISH, 1 WAHOO, 4 BONITOS and 5 BIG EYE JACKS in three days of fishing. Captain Adolofo Espinosa
Found a nice school of Roosterfish near Petitland and landed 6 ROOSTERS in one inshore day. Captain Ruben on the Vamonos 1 reports a 2 SAILFISH, 1 DORADO Day and the crew aboard the Vamonos 2 reports 7 SAILFISH and 2 DORADOS in 4 days of fishing. The fishing has certainly picked-up over the past few weeks and barring any unforeseen weather occurrences this year's Ixtapa Zihuatanejo Total Tag & Release tournament should be action packed. Interested anglers are encouraged to contact our office for last minute availability and details. Finally, our ground contact, Able Cortez reported a very special visitor to Zihuataenjo Bay this week - A very friendly Sea Lion which was the attraction for Many locals as well as tourists. The Sea Lion found many people willing to pass out free meals throughout the week and stayed around to enjoy the feast.

IN GENERAL: What’s that song, “Seems Like Old Times?” Roosters, sails, tuna, great weather and love in the air. Nate and Carmen Gills on their honeymoon from North Carolina caught six roosters on poppers yesterday (10/29). Wait until they tell their grandchildren that one in about 40 years.

Other than that remarkable achievement by Nate and Carmen, things were pretty much business as usual. The 82º blue water remains close, 20- to 25-pound dorado are being frisky and the boats are averaging somewhere around 2.5 sailfish a day. Top it off with a smattering of yellowfin tuna and it all spells Zihuatanejo (which sometimes isn’t easy to spell.)

Oh, almost forgot, sierra mackerel (aka as ceviche on the hoof) are in great schools and as close to a sure thing as there is when saltwater fly fishing. Wire tippet? You bet!

Better weather and sea conditions allowed for a slight upswing in both the inshore and offshore fishing last week. Dr. Ed Anderson, of Cambridge, MD, after having a slow day offshore on the Vamanos II, rebounded nicely with Capt. Adolofo landing 2 SAILFISH, 2 DORADO, and released 1 BLUE MARLIN in one day of fishing. Returning angler, Jeff Burham, also fishing with Capt. Adolofo landed 10 BONITOS, 2 SAILFISH and lost 1 ROOSTERFISH. Paul Lundberg of Dallas, TX, fishing with Capt. Chiro and Efraine landed 2 SAILFISH and lost 2 SAILFISH. Capt. Miguel of the Tarpon reported one shark in one offshore day. Capt. Gume aboard the Zaptito Gordo reported 3 BONITOS and 1 SPANISH MACKEREL on a fly with a client from France. Several other captains reported 2-3 SAILFISH per day per boat. The blue water is between 8 to 10 miles out and the sea conditions are excellent.

I/Z Climate: Humid with Temps in the high 80's with no rain.

Sea Conditions: Excellent

Bait Supply: Good

IN GENERAL: The 82º blue water remains close and the fishing is picking up a bit over the last couple of weeks.

Captain German, of the 31-foot “Bacalao II,” told me this morning he has been fishing five days straight, averaging two to three sailfish and one 20- to 25-pound dorado for each day on the water.

Captain Poli, on the “Don Gordo I” fished with Scott and Alicia Morrison, with another couple from Houston and released three sailfish and kept one 27 pound dorado.

No yellowfin tuna were reported this week.

The inshore action has also picked up. The roosterfish bite remains strong, with an average of 4 fish per day taken on poppers or slow trolled live bait. A lot of sierras have moved in, producing great action for both the spin gear and fly-rodders. We are using a 30-pound mono bite tippet on these toothy sierras. The jack crevalle and black skipjack are mixed in with the sierra, getting us more bites than we would by using a wire tippet.

A combination a some rainy weather and a port closure hampered the fishing in I/Z last week. On the days when the fleet was able to get out the captains reported seeing good numbers of fish but the bites were on and off. Captain Adolofo Espinosa took First and Second place in the Baja Fly tournament held this past week with client form Dallas Texas. They landed a total of 34 Spanish Mackerel, 6 Jacks, 4 Needlefish, 6 tiger Grouper, 1 Big Eye Jack, 11 Green Jacks and 1 Pampano all on the fly. Captain Arturo Landa on the Janeth also fishing the tournament reported 1 Sailfish that did not count in the scoring. Captain Martin on the ISamar landed 2 Shark and 1 Roosterfish but these were landed on conventional tackle and did not count in the scoring. Captain Alex aboard the Sirena fishing with Jeff Rogers landed 2 SAILFISH and lost tow others in one day offshore. Also fishing aboard the Sirena was Angler Antonio Diaz and sons who landed 3 ROOSTERFISH and 4 YELLOWTAIL JACKS in one day of inshore fishing.
Captain Cheva fishing with Mr. Garrett landed 4 SAILFISH in two offshore days. Fishing with another client Captain Cheva took one SAILFISH and lost three others on the fly in one offshore day. The Princis Iris reported a two SAILFISH day and the Super panga Christian reported landing 3 Roosterfish in one inshore day. The captains reported seeing many more SAILFISH as there numbers continue to build to next months Ixtapa ZIhuatanejo Total Tag & Release tournament. We still have a few good captains open for the tournament.

ZIHUATANEJO, MAINLAND MEXICO

IN GENERAL: Clean blue water is being found within a few miles of shore with a mix of sailfish, dorado and tuna being caught.

The Jacks or Better Charity Tournament and Guide Challenge will wrap up today (Saturday). While sunny during the day, the last several evenings have produced torrential downpours creating more than usual runoff that has caused less than ideal inshore conditions. So far the fishing has been good and the catching on the slow side. A number of larger roosters and jacks have been found but none landed. The Guide Challenge produced lively competition between the guides throughout the week with the final accuracy casting event to be held later today to determine the winner of the $1,000 prize.

Exceptional weather and calm sea conditions along with good offshore action and great inshore action was the order of the day in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo last week. Finishing up his week of fishing, French angler Mr. Barenes fishng aboard the Dos Hermanos 1 for 4 days landed 5 SAILFISH, 8 BONITOS, 5 NEEDLEFISH, 19 ROOSTERFISH and 20 YELLOWTAIL JACKS. Captains Adolofo also fished two other days during the week landed 4 ROOSTERFISH and 4 BONITOS. Several other boats reported an average of 2 SILFISH per day along with increasing numbers of DORADOS. For Bottom fishing enthusiasts Captain Alex of the super panga SIRENA reports non stop action on good sized red snapper at the black rock, just a mile offshore. Many boats are limiting out on these great eating bottom fish.

Final preparations are underway for this year's Ixtapa Zihuatanejo total Tag & Release tournament to be held November 14 - 17th, 2004. We will once again hold a live auction during the tournament with the proceeds going to benefit the Children's Wish Foundation.
