With the oncoming full moon and hard month of fishing pressure, the fishing last week marked a bit of a slowdown as compared to the wide open offshore bite in January. A decrease in the schools of bait was also noticed this past week. Boats on average raised 2 - 3 Sailfish per day with some ' 0' strike days thrown in as well. Captains reported good action on one day followed by a complete shutdown on the next. Still some anglers return with respectable catches. Returning New Hampshire angler, Doug Clark, fishing aboard the Moramay landed 5 SAILFISH, 1 DORADO, 1 ROOSTERFISH 1 YELLOWTAIL JACK and several BONITOS in 6 days of fishing. Captain Adolofo along with angler Mr. Panix landed 4 SAILFISH, YELLOWTAIL JACKS and 1 ROOSTERFISH in 3 days of fishing and additional 20 JYELLOWTAIL JACKS 1 ROOSTER FISH, 9 RAINBOW RUNNERS, and 22 BONITOS while fishing 2 other inshore days. Mr. Nichols group fishing aboard the La Bamba and The Marlin Azul managed 7 SAILFISH in 5 DAYS of fishing. French Angler Mr Soussaol finished his final two days aboard the Super panga Leydy, landing 4 SAILFISH . Illinois angler Randy Cottrell also fishing aboard the Leydy landed 1 SAILFISH on his first day offshore. Flyfishing angler John Vangheem fishing aboard the Monica had several shots at SAILFISH on a fly in One day. Returning SCI member Mr. Gary Christensen fishing aboard the Janeth landed 4 JACKS and 3 BONITOS on one inshore day and 1 SAILFISH on one offshore day. Overall the captains reported working very hard for a few strikes. The inshore appears to by picking up a bit with better numbers of Roosterfish being raised. Late February, March and April are BIG FISH months for Marlin and Tuna and interested angler are encouraged to contact our office for boat availability.

IN GENERAL: The 80º blue water got pushed out several miles early this week when we were hit by a couple of days of unseasonable rain and wind. The fishing dropped off until we found the fish again. By mid-week we were back at it strong, with the boats each averaging about 3 to 4 sailfish a day.

Dave Horn from Michigan fished with Santiago on the panga “Gitana” for 4 days. Even though he was fishing a couple of days under adverse conditions, he still managed 15 sails released, and a couple of nice dorado for dinner. His best day, was on his last day of fishing when they raised 15 sailfish and he released 9.

Dr. John Adams, of Spokane, Wash., fly-fished with Martin and I on the panga “Isamar.” He hooked three of the five fish which we teased to the boat and we raised a total of seven.

The dorado action has picked up, but they are still only incidental catches because the mature fish do not school together. They are averaging about 20 pounds.

A few yellowfin tuna have been taken, but in random areas. One day they are at 25 miles, and the next we find them at 10 miles. We are getting into the season where they should start making a strong showing soon.

IN GENERAL: It sounds like the proverbial “broken record,” but it’s a repeat of last week: The 80º blue water is still holding at around 6 miles and the sailfish are cooperating. Almost every boat is jumping between 8 and 12 fish a day, with many boats hooking as many as 7 to 8 fish each.

There are 25- to 30-pound class dorado are being caught, but mostly by trolling. There are few concentrated pods.

The days most anglers wait for arrived last week in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo. With Large schools of bait present the SAILFISH showed up in big numbers. In total our fleet ran 58 offshore charters, landing 203 SAILFISH. Equally impressive was the number of SAILFISH that were teased to the fly but not hooked and landed. That number would have taken the opportunities at SAILFISH well over the 500 mark. Leading the charge was returning anglers Ray & son Darren along with friend Mike Visocki who managed to land 35 SAILS and 3 DORADO in 5 days while fishing aboard the super panga Dos Hermanos 2. The trio, while catching some Bonito for bait just outside the harbor, had a estimated 700 Lb Black Marlin take one of their baits right in the prop wash. After a short screaming run the huge fish broke water as well as the 30 lb test line but managed to keep the Bonito. It was a sight that Ray said he will never forget. An additional bonus to the number of SAILFISH they landed was one huge Sail landed by Darren that was estimated at close to 165 lbs.. New York City fly fishing angler, Gary Wendrovski fishing aboard the Vamonos 3 landed three SAILFISH in one day on the fly. Mr. Wayne Miller and Larry Cowles of the Silver Bow Fly Shop along with their group while fishing aboard the super pangas, Janeth, Secuestro, Marfel and Tarpon landed 25 BONITOS on flies as well as a 47' Dorado taken by Bill Williams. Angler Rick Varnell took two 20 lb. YELLOWTAIL jacks on a fly and Mr. Wayne Miller released his first Pacific Sailfish on a fly, a beautiful fish estimated to be in the 120 lb class. Washington state angler Mr. Ron Hammill fishing with captain Sabino on the super panga ' MELS ' landed 6 SAILFISH in two offshore days. Angler Mr Peohlman fishing aboard the Leydy with Captain Candelerio landed 4 SAILFISH in 2 days. Mr Jim Wolf landed 4 SAILFISH in one day while fishing with Captain Jose Vargas on the LA Bamba. Dr. Jim Schmonsky had twin 3 SAILFISH days aboard the La Bamba and Moramay. Returning angler Jerry Burns, fishing 3 days aboard the Dos Hermanos 2 landed 4 Sails, 8 Rainbow runners, 2 Yellowtail Jacks and 8 Bonitos. Washington Angler, Chris Morrison landed 14 Rainbow runners 12 Yellowtail Jacks and 28 Bonitos in 2 inshore days with captain Adolofo and 14 Sails in 2 days while fishing aboard the Dos Hermanos 2. Arizona fly fishing angler Steve Brillhart fishing aboard the Monica for four days raised 39 Sailfish releasing 2 fish. Fly fishing partner Erik Cramer fishing aboard the Zapatito Gordo had an equal number of opportunites also landing 2 SAILS in 4 days. First time visitor to Ixtapa Zihuatanejo Paul Collins and Matthew Reid fishing aboard the Vamonos had the single best day, landing 8 Sailfish. Conditions remain near perfect with the majority of the SAILFISH being caught inside of 10 miles. Several Marlin were raised and the Dorado have been spotty. Yellowfin Tuna remain far offshore and the Roosterfish have once again done the disappearing act.

Ixtapa Zihuatanejo weather: Seasonably nice with an occasional passing shower

IN GENERAL: The 80º blue water is only a couple of miles off the beach and the sailfish fishing has been outstanding. We are in our absolute busiest time of the year, with almost 40 boats a day chartered. Most boats are releasing 4 to 7 sailfish a day, and are raising 10 to 15 in the spread.

Dan Smith, a fly-fisherman and Alaska salmon guide on a “busman’s holiday,” has averaged 4 releases a day on sailfish. He had one fantastic day of 6 releases.

Inshore, the large jacks are still on the beaches, with a lot of sierra about a quarter of a mile out. The roosterfish action has cooled down a little bit, but this may be from lots of fishing pressure and not from the fact they are not here.

IN GENERAL: The 80º blue water is about 6 miles off the beach. Fishing has been very good for most species.

Most every boat is releasing 4 to 5 sailfish a day average. The dorado are scattered, but one boat out of three is catching a nice 25- to 30-pound fish daily.

Dave Weed, of Alberta, Canada, fished with Captain Margarito on the “Gaby” and took a 200 pound yellowfin tuna. He caught the fish at the 10 mile mark, slow trolling a live bonito under the porpoise.

Inshore, the roosterfish and jack crevalle bite has been holding up very well. Also, the sierras are providing some decent light tackle action.

'Doc' fished a total of 6 days. Returning anglers, Bob & Vickie Higgins tallied a solid offshore day aboard the Vamonos 3 landing 6 SAILFISH. Turning their attention to Inshore they had lots of action on schools of BONITO as well as landing 15 YELLOWTAIL JACKS and 1 BIG EYE JACK. Angler Brian Smith fishing aboard the Vamonos 2 with captain Calle' landed 4 SAILFISH on his first day offshore. Inshore captain Adolofo Espinosa reported very few ROOSTERFISH but did managed to land one big fish in the 60 LB class. IN GENERAL: The 80º blue water has moved off the beach to about 10 miles. The main action for sailfish is taking place about 14 to 18 miles out. A very nice bonus is the mature dorado are starting to show in good numbers.

Fly fishing client Butch Cooley, of Seattle, WA, fished 2 more days with us and we raised 8 sailfish each day. On the fly, he hooked an average of 3 fish a day.

Steve Miller of Albuquerque, N.M. had a tough day with Captain Martin and I on the panga Isamar when the S/E winds blew and dropped the barometer. The winds were not over 10 knots, but it shut down the fishing for the one day. As conditions stabilized on the next day, we raised 4 sailfish and hooked 3. Steve also made a great cast to a 32 pound dorado. The dorado ended up as dinner for all of us. All fish were caught on the fly and using IGFA rules.

Jason Cook, of Carson, Nevada fished on the panga Gitana with Santiaga. They released 9 sailfish in two days.

Captain Adolpho on the panga Dos Hermanos told me this morning the roosterfish action has slowed down, but he did manage a huge rooster of 80 pounds on conventional gear yesterday. They then got into 'mucho' jacks running to 25 pounds. The rooster and jacks are crashing on bait just off the surf line about 8 miles North of Zihuatanejo Bay. Adolpho also reports a lot of sierras are rounding out the day for his clients.
