Although the spring turnover to warmer water conditions has not yet completed the signs are starting to look much better. There were some very good days followed by some very slow days which is indicative of this time frame when the currents can't make up their mind which way to go. Leading angler for this week was Mr. Steve Martin from New Jersey who landed 5 SAILFISH on his first day out with Captain Adolopho on the Dos Hermanos. Mr. Martin followed up that day with a 160lb. BLUE MARLIN taken aboard the Leydy with captain Candelerio. New York angler Adam Stewart landed 3 SAILFISH while fishing with Captain Chiro on the Vamonos III. Cabela's Outdoors adventure director, Gregg Severenson also fishing with Captain Chiro on the Vamonos III landed a SAILFISH on his first day out. Captain Adolopho also scored a huge TUNA catch landing 37 YELLOWFIN in one afternoon at the 55 mile mark. The fish were schoolie sized in the 20-30 lb. class. Captain Adolopho reported the first good inshore action as he landed 12 ROOSTERFISH to 60lbs. and 15 BIG YELLOWTAIL JACKS in one day of fishing. The Blue water is nearly inside the bay and the water temps are in the high 70's. Inshore conditions have improved dramatically as there are no signs of the cold green water. The schools of MACKEREL and BONITOS are thick all along the coast.

With the onset of a different wind and current the fishing conditions changed for the better in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo last week. The beginning of the week was marked by excellent YELLOWFIN TUNA action with some boats landing school tuna in the 20 - 30 lb class while other found the giants. Boats were averaging 150 - 200 Kilos of tuna per day. Towards the end of the week a gentle breeze from the Southwest brought in warmer water and the return of good numbers of SAILFISH.
Returning Delaware angler, Larry Weldin landed 1 SAILFISH on his first day aboard the Janeth. Returning angler Andy Cousens fishing aboard the VAMONOS III with captain Chiro who has switched assignments to the VAMONOS III landed 4 SAILFISH and missed three others on his first day of fishing. Reports of other boats raising an average of 6 SAILFISH per day was common toward the end of the week. The inshore action is still being dominated by huge schools of YELLOWTAIL JACKS and BONITOS. No ROOSTERFISH were reported.

The Annual Billfish tournament is scheduled for MAY 2,3&4 with the main sponsor being NISSAN. 5 Vehicles will be awarded to the top 5 anglers. Interested anglers are encouraged to call or email our office for details.

  Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo Sportfishing Report
3-27-03 - 4-4-03

The beginning of this week started out just as flat as
last week.  With a southwest wind brought in some favorable water and the
fishing improved dramatically towards the end of the week.  Leading the
SAILFISH charge was Capt. Adolopho Espinosa and clients  Danny Courtney and
his four sons who each caught a SAILFISH on their first day out.  Angler,
Eric Leep, fishing aboard the 'La Bamba' with Capt. Jose Vargas caught 2 DORADO
and 2 SAILFISH in one day of fishing.  Boats were averaging 2-3 billfish
strikes per day.  There were several nice DORADOS caught as well.  The
hottest bite was the YELLOWFIN TUNA who's numbers were at times just short of
unbelievable.  Huge schools of SARDINES and baitballs of ANCHOVIES dotted
the coastline and schools of YELLOWFING TUNA in the 15-40lb. class were
encountered each day.  Returning Florida angler Mike Viscoki, fishing with
Capt. Canderlerio aboard the 'Leydy' landed 25 YELLOWFIN in one 4 hour period
and took another 20 TUNA with Capt. Adolpho the largest going just over
100lbs.  The blue water is at the 10 mile mark and huge schools of BONITO
are also scattered throughout that band of water.  One BLACK MARLIN of
517lbs. Was landed by the super panga 'Princess Iris' but generally the MARLIN
bite has been slow.  Inshore the hot action is with SPAINSH MACKEREL and
huge JACKS.  No ROOSTERFISH have been reported.

With inshore water temperatures dropping to the 63 Degree mark, the fishing in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo all but shut down last week. It has been close to forever since we have seen temperatures this cold in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo. Captain Miguel Alvarez reports sighting seas lions in the cold green water. He has also reported finding large school of huge Yellowfin Tuna but the fish were not willing to feed. Offshore, many boats are getting skunked as the blue water has moved offshore of the 30 mile mark. Ample bait remain in the area but the absence of any substantial number of predators is Spooky & Puzzling.
Angler Patrick Pugh, fishing aboard the Vamonos I, broke the Sailfish jinks by landing the first billfish of the week on March 24th. Angler Maris Long fishing aboard the Vamonos II landed 1 SAILFISH along with a nice sized DORADO. Roger Georges fishing with captain Adolopho Espinosa trolled up one SAILFISH at the 8 miles mark. Captain Adolopho reposts good inshore action for Spanish Mackerel and bonitos. Returning Chicago angler Fred Aigner landed 23 Spanish mackerel in one morning of fishing near Ixtapa Island

Once again as the war in Iraq enters another week, our hearts, prayers, and thoughts continue to be with all of those who continue to sacrifice for our way of life. May God bless them and bring this conflict to a quick resolution.

Little has changed in the fishing pattern over the past week. It has been a very long time since we can remember such a downturn in the fishing for such a prolonged period of time. Cold green inshore water with temperatures in the low 70's extends all the way out to the 10 mile mark. This band of water is rich with schools of MACKEREL and BONITO but the cold temperatures have really slowed down the feeding activity of the predators. Although some nice fish have been caught it has been far and few between strikes with many boats posting fishless days. The Inshore band of water has been the place for those searching for BLACK MARLIN with several being landed and several more being lost. The main SAILFISH action along with some DORADO has also been in the green water and just about all of the action has been on slow trolled MACKEREL or BONITO off the Zwing Downrigger planers. Top boat for the week was the Super Panga, 'Janeth' with French Angler Mr. Delnette who landed 1 SAILFISH and 5 DORADOS in 5 days of fishing. Mr. Delnatte also lost a big BLACK MARLIN when the split ring on the snap swivel broke at boat side. Italian angler, Mr. Doss, fishing with Capt. Adolopho landed 2 SAILFISH, 8 YELLOWTAIL JACKS, 6 SPANISH MACKEREL and a large NEEDLEFISH in three days of fishing. Chicago angler Mr. Kives fishing aboard the 'Secuestro De Amor' landed 14 BONITOS and 4 SPANISH MACKEREL but was eluded by the big JACKS and ROOSTERFISH. Capt. Miguel Alvarez on the EL SOLTAR made several runs to the knuckle area (40 miles out) and hooked several BLUE MARLIN for client Mr. Heggins. Capt. Miguel also landed 2 YELLOWFIN TUNA in the 200lb. class on another venture out to the knuckle. There is a sharp temperature rise into the low 80's at the knuckle and on certain days the action has been good for both BLUE MARLIN and YELLOWFIN TUNA. On other days even that area has been unproductive.

Our hearts and prayers are with all who are involved in Iraq protecting our way and standard of life. We all hope for better days ahead and a return to more peaceful times.

Sincerely,
Stan Lushinsky

Dramatically better sea conditions last week started a change to more productive fishing in Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo. Although the SAILFISH bit remains slow, there were increasing numbers brought to the boat each day. The on coming full moon and cooler water along with huge schools of MACKEREL and BONIT brought in a good MARLIN bite. First time visitors to I/Z from Cabelas Outdoor Adventures, John and Sonia Wilkinson, fishing four days aboard the El Soltar landed a 220lb. BLUE MARLIN, a 225lb BLACK MARLIN and 1 SAILFISH. They also found schools of big YELLOWFIN TUNA at the 42 mile mark but the fish were unwilling to bite. French angler, Mr. Delnatte, while fishing aboard the Super Panga, 'Janeth', hooked a big BLACK MARLIN and lost the fish after a 3 1/2 hour fight. Returning angler, Ray Brill, landed one 130lb SAILFISH along with several DORADOS. The inshore water continues to be cold for this area, 72 degrees. The blue water is at the 10 mile mark but the real action is at the knuckle, 37 mile south where the water has reached the low 80's.

Much of the same conditions that have been in place over the past two weeks were once again in place for last week's fishing. The fishing could best be described as long periods of nothing between very few bites for just a few fish. There were many boats returning each day without raising a single fish. The SAILFISHING remains slow with anglers going far offshore to find good looking water. Although the YELLOWFIN TUNA are being sited, getting them to bite has been difficult. Inshore, the YELLOWTAIL JACK bite has picked up but the ROOSTERFISH remain elusive. Angler Tom Baldwin' s group fishing on The Intruzza landed 2 SAILFISH and 1 DORADO on the new Cruiser Liberty. Pennsylvania angler Mr. Slachta landed 1 SAILFISH and 1 DORADO in two days of fishing aboard the Secuestro De Amor. Angler, Russell Potterfield also fishing aboard the Secuestro managed just 1 DORADO in three days of fishing. Captain Chiro of the Yellowfin II reported a single SAILFISH, 2 DORADOS and a lost MARLIN in three days of fishing. Captain Adolopho Espinosa reported difficult inshore conditions as well landing 9 YELLOWTAIL JACKS and 2 ROOSTERFISH ( up to 40 lbs. ) in two days of fishing. There remains good schools of Bonito in the area leaving captains puzzled why the Marlin and GiantTuna have not made a better showing. Blue water continues to be far offshore. With warming waters and more favorable currents the area is poised for better fishing in the weeks ahead.

The turn of the full moon brought with it a cold green current form the North and the combination of the two events spelled disaster for the fishing in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo last week. The once abundant SAILFISH were last seen moving South to warmer temps and any boat raising one last week was considered lucky. Mr. Don's Orem's group fishing 4 days on 5 Super Pangas landed 3 SAILFISH, (one which went close to 150 lbs), 18 YELLOWFIN TUNA to 40lbs. as well as a host of Big YELLOWTAIL JACKS and BONITOS. French angler, Mr. Germain fishing aboard the Super Panga, 'Monica' landed 1 SAILFISH, 2 YELLOWFIN TUNAS and 1 ROOSTERFISH. Returning New Jersey angler, Mr. Ron Reinhardt fishing aboard the 'Yellowfin II' landed 3 YELLOWFIN TUNA. Mr. Sammy Branoff, 76 years young, fishing aboard the 'La Bamba' was able to wrestle two nice 40lb DORADOS to the boat on his first day out. Capt. Adolopho Espinosa reports that the YELLOWFIN TUNA as the best game in town at this time but they have been difficult to locate moving between the 20-40 mile mark. Even when the schools were found they were often reluctant to bite. Finding some floating debris this afternoon Capt. Adolopho landed 1 SAILFISH, 6 AMBERJACK and 7 SHARKS. Several BLUE MARLIN were also reported as well as other boats hooking up but loosing MARLIN this week. As the week ended the blue water was moving closer to shore and hopes of better days lay ahead.

The next few weeks should see an increase in the TUNA and MARLIN activity as there continues to be schools of BONITO all around the Ixtapa area. As water conditions improve the inshore bit should also begin to develop. For those anglers interested in red hot Roosterfishing May through August can be spectacular. The oncoming full moon, stronger currents and the seasonal turnover of the waters off Ixtapa Zihuatanejo all occurred last week making fishing difficult and scattered. The abundant bait supply diminished and with it the predators looked for more fertile feeding grounds. The arrival of a colder inshore current pushed the blue water out to beyond the 15 miles mark and boats had to go an average of 24 miles to find productive SAILFISH water. Boats were finding it difficult to average more than one to 2 strikes per day off SAILFISH while the action on YELLOWFIN TUNA picked up substantially. The most productive boat for YELLOWFIN TUNA this past week was Captain Chico on the Llamarada fishing with Michigan anglers Tom and Cynthia Stanek. In two days of fishing the duo landed 20 YELLOWFIN TUNA to 50 lbs.. New Jersey angler Ron Reinhardt fishing aboard the Dos Hermanos also got into some YELLOWFIN TUNA landing 5 along with 1 SAILFISH. French Anglers Mr. Lorieux and Coudrier fishing aboard the super panga Leydy landed 3 SAILFISH, 4 YELLOWFIN TUNA , 3 DORADOS 4 YELLOWTAIL JACKS and 7 BONITOS in 5 days of fishing. The first signs of a colder current appeared this week which pushed the SAILFISH a bit farther out and slowed the bite down from its wide open levels a week ago. Most boat still averaged 2 - 3 Shots per day on SAILFISH with a few scattered DORADO as well.
Our fleet landed a total of 74 SAILFISH, 2 BLUE MARLIN, 12 DORADOS, 2 YELLOWFIN TUNA in 42 offshore charter days. Leading the pack were the La Bamba with London Anglers Fred Smith and Jon Peterssen along with French angler Mr. Tesnier. In 7 days of fishing the group landed 14 SAILFISH and 4 DORADOS. Equaling that performance was angler Laura Jansen on the Vamonos I landing 14 SAILFISH and 1 DORADO in 4 days of fishing Bob Koranek landed 14 SAILFISH and 2 DORADOS in five days of fishing aboard the Vamonos II and Yellowfin II. Mr. Koronek turned in the single best day landing 6 SAILFISH aboard the Vamonos II, Followed by London angler Tim Hoare on the Secuestro with 5 SAILFISH. The Largest Dorado of the week was taken aboard the super panga Leydy with French angler Mr. L Lorieux. That Dorado scaled in at just over 60 lbs. Captain Miguel Alvarez with Angler Mr. Degraw accounted for both BLUE MARLIN one estimated at 300 lbs. and the other one at 400 lbs. Mr. Degraw also landed 4 SAILFISH in 3 days of fishing. Inshore has showed signs of life but results are still inconsistent. Captain Adolopho Espinosa on the Dos Hermanos had a 6 ROOSTERFISH day with one fish going over the 60 lb mark. The next days were slow and the fish were unwilling to bite. Several Big Jacks were also taken. The upcoming months should be prime time for Big Marlin and Yellowfin Tuna. Excellent dates and boats are still available.
