A light week for angling activity in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo but the results were anything but light. Returning angler from Sussex New Jersey Ron Rienhardt along with Son Jeffrey, had some exceptional fishing both offshore and inshore with captain Adolofo on the Dos Hermanos 1. Ron & Jeffrey raised 9 SAILFISH on their first day offshore, hooking 6 and landing 3 all on light tackle spinning. Turing their attention to inshore the duo landed 7 Roosterfish to 40 Lbs. along with a handful of SKIPJACK TUNA. All of the inshore action came using Cotton Cordell Top water pencil poppers. Atlanta Angler Dan Walden also returning from another four day fishing adventure landed 10 SAILFISH in three days of offshore fishing aboard the Dos Hermanos 1. There continues to be large schools of bait fish all along the coast and the blue water is within 3 miles which is the norm for this time of year.

We have had some very changeable conditions over the past two weeks in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo. The last two weeks have resembled more the April turnover than the normally red hot fishing that we experience at this time of the year. Still despite daily changes in the conditions, some outstanding catches were reported. The beginning of the period started out with cold green water extending out to the 30 miles mark. The new moon made quick work of that and within 5 days the blue water was literally in the bay. Dennis and Mare Dore of Seattle Washington, fishing aboard the Janeth scored their first ROOSTERFISH landing two which went over the 50lb mark and loosing another big fish. Fabian Sanchez fishing aboard the Dos Hermanos 2 lost a huge PARGO after a 30 minute fight and then proceeded to land a 40lb ROOSTRFISH, 2 SAILFISH and 1 TUNA all on his first day of fishing. Dave and Deb Fogg along with Kim Hale fishing aboard the Llamarada landed 3 SAILFISH missed another 3 and landed 66 YELLOWFIN TUNA in three days of fishing. New Jersey anglers, Ron & Jeff Reinhardt, fishing aboard the Dos Hermanos I turned in the single best offshore day of the week landing 9 SAILFISH. Texas Angler Marshall Treadwell fishing a combination of 5 days aboard the Dos Hermanos 2, Secuestro and Vamonos 3 landed 5 SAILFISH, 25 YELLOWFIN TUNA, 6 ROOSTERFISH, 4 JACKS, 7 BONITOS and 4 large NEEDLEFISH. Kansas Angler John Ludwikowski fishing aboard the Dos Hermanos 1 for 4 days landed 3 SAILFISH , 14 ROOSTERFISH and 4 JACKS. Mr. Herman Pass fishing aboard the Vamonos 3 landed 5 SAILFISHG and 8 YELLOWFIN TUNA in two days of fishing. The amount of SARDINES and BONITO in the area is nothing short of amazing. Near the end of the week offshore action was a close a 3 miles and the ROOSTERFISH have returned in big number. Downrigging with Zwings and live BONITO is the best way to catch up with a 60 plus pounder at the rocks while the Cotton Cordell Pencil popper and the Roberts spoon lures are top producers all along the beach.

Ixtapa Zihuatanejo weather: Some daily sprinkles and passing squalls followed by hot humid afternoons.

Sea Conditions: Calm to Moderate

Bait Supply: Excellent

Best fishing area: Inshore Petitland, offshore: 3 - 10 miles out in front of Ixtapa Island

It was a week of wild swings in the fishing as the blue water was being moved over wide ranges by strong afternoon northwest winds. There were some great days followed by some totally off days during the week. Angler, Hotoshi Doi , fishing aboard the Super Panga, 'Marfel', landed 2 SAILFISH and 1 DORADO in tow days of fishing. Angler, Weldon Doe, fishing aboard the Super Panga, 'Moramay', landed 1 SAILFISH and 1 TUNA in two days of fishing. Top single day offshore was turned in by Holland angler, Mr. Schouten, landing 8 Sailfish while fishing with Capt. Adolopho on the Dos Hermanos I. French angler, Nicoloas Guy landed 3 SAILFISH and 1 monster ROOSTERFISH while fishing aboard the Dos Hermanos II with Capt. Jose Diaz. Mark Peterson and friends from North Oaks, MN, total numbers for four days of fishing included 14 SAILFISH, 3 DORADO, 2 MARLIN, 4 TUNA, and several BONITOS.
The MARLIN weighed in at 280lbs. and 200lbs. According to Mark 'the worst part
of the trip is that he lost 2 MARLIN within five minutes of one another on the
last afternoon.' Returning angler from Holland, Guido Gylen, fishing aboard the Dos Hermanos I landed 8 ROOSTERFISH to 60lbs. along with 8 JACKS in on day of fishing. Retuning Milwaukee angler, Ray Brill and wife Bobbi, landed 5 SAILFISH in three offshore days and 3 ROOSTERFISH and 6 JACKS in one inshore day. The largest ROOSTERFISH was landed by Bobbi and scaled close to the 80lb. mark. Angler, Mr. Cornell, fishing aboard the Vamonos II landed 4 SAILFISH and 1 DORADO in two days of fishing. The cameras of CABELAS OUTDOOR ADVENTURE seen on OLN captured some of the action as Human Resources Director, Larry Hire, and Pro Staff Guide, Mark Maus landed both SAILFISH and ROOSTERFISH up to 65lbs. At the beginning of the week the blue water was within 3 miles but moved out to over 25 miles only to return back again to the 3 mile mark by week's end. Huge schools of porpoises are found along all the beaches chasing SARDINES but the TUNA have moved offshore.

Ixtapa/Zihuatanjeo Climate: Hazy, hot, and humid with strong afternoon winds.

Sea Conditions: calm mornings followed by increasing waves in the afternoons.

Bait Supply: Fair

The offshore action continues to improve but a strange cold inshore current really slowed down the inshore action. Offshore Angler , David Padget led the offshore parade with a 10 SAILFISH day on May 22nd followed by a 6 SAILFISH and 1 YELLOWFIN tuna day on the 23rd. Mr. Padget was fishing aboard the Vamonos 3. Wisconsin angler, Greg Schmidt fishing aboard the La Bamba landed 3 SAILFISH and 7 YELLOWFIN TUNA in one day. Mr. Gregg Grossman also fishing aboard the LA Bamba landed 1 SAILFISH, and raising 11 others, as well as landing 2 YELLOWFIN TUNA in one day of fishing. Notable European sportfishing writer from Holland, Jacques Schouten fishing aboard the Dos Hermanos 1 landed 14 SAILFISH, 9 YELLOWFIN TUNA , one which scaled in over 300 Lbs, along with 35 YELLOWTAIL JACKS and 1 DORADO. Angler Mike Mccallister from the Cabela's Staff, fishing aboard the Dos Hermanos 2 with Captain Jose Diaz landed 2 SAILFISH on his first day of fishing. First time anglers and visitors to Ixtapa Zihuatanejo from North Dakota, Dave and Anne Raatz fishing aboard the Secuestro De Amor landed their first SAILFISH along with a nice YELLOWFIN TUNA and a handful of Bonitos in a ½ day of fishing. French anglers Zoubowski and Cabaut while targeting the elusive ROOSTERFISH changed plans for a day and landed an estimated 220 lb YELLOWFIN TUNA and a few SAILFISH while the ROOSTERFISH went into hybernation for the week. Mr. Zoubowski and Mr Cabaut were fishing aboard the Janeth with Captain Arturo. The blue water and schools of tuna remain just 3 miles out but the real surprise this spring has been the inshore water temperature and the absence of any ROOSTERFISH.

Ixtapa Zihuatanejo weather: Cooler than normal but seasonably beautiful!

The SAILFISH bite continues to improve while the big schools of YELLOWFIN TUNA continue to be found throughout the Ixtapa Zihuatanejo area. Inshore the YELLOWTAIL JACKS are so thick that they won't give the ROOSTERFISH a change to take the bait or plug. Illinois angler fishing the Bob Biagi Group finished up their week of fishing aboard the Dos Hermanos 1 & 2 by landing a total of 35 YELLOWTAIL JACKS, 1 ROOSTERFISH a handful of Bonitos and Needlefish along with 2 SAILFISH in two days of fishing. Angler Tommy Davis fishing aboard the Vamonos 3 with Captain Chiro had two stellar billfish days landing 9 SAILFISH on his first day out followed by 8 SAILFISH and 3 YELLOWFIN TUNA on his second day. California Angler, William Kuhn fishing two days aboard the Dos Hermanos1 landed 45 YELLOWFIN TUNA and 3 YELLOWTAIL JACKS. Mr. Kuhn fished offshore 1 additional day aboard the Dos Hermanos 2 landing 2 SAILFISH. Oklahoma angler David Padget landed 18 YELLOWTAIL JACK, 6 BONITOS and lost 1 ROOSTERFISH while fishing with Captian Adolopho. Mr. Padget then went offshore for 2 days aboard the Vamonos 3 landing 10 SAILFISH, loosing 2 others and landing 7 YELLOWFIN TUNA. Mr. Kyle Jorgensen also fishing aboard the Vamonos 3 finished the week by landing 6 SAILFISH and 3 YELLOWFIN TUNA in a single day of fishing. One MARLIN was also reported this week.

TUNA TUNA TUNA in incredible numbers all week long. Merrick New York angler, ' Doc ' Jarrow lead the tuna fest last week with over 200 YELLOWFIN TUNA in 5 days of fishing. Doc was fishing with Captains Pieo and Chico aboard the super pangas Cobra and Llamarada. The action was fast and furious with the large schools of TUNA being found less than 10 miles of Zihuatanejo Bay. California angler Shane Shelton, fishing 3 days aboard the Vamonos 3 with captain Chiro landed 69 YELLOWFIN TUNA. Also fishing aboard the Vamonos 3 was Texas angler Ned Snyder who landed 3 SAILFISH, one on a fly, and 7 YELLOWFIN TUNA, two on a fly, in one day of fishing. California angler, Bill Waddle fishing with captain Chiro landed 20 YELLOWFIN TUNA and 1 SAILFISH in one day. Illinois angler Bob Biagi along with his group fishing aboard the Dos Hermanos 2 with captain Jose Diaz landed 35 YELLOWFIN TUNA in 2 days of fishing. Anlger, Gregg Potti, fishing with captain Temo on the Secuestro landed 2 SAILFISH and 3 YELLOWTAIL TUNA in one day of fishing. All of the tuna have been in the 12 - 25 lb class. Near the end of the week the water temperatures began to rise and the SAILFISH activity picked up as well. Both inshore and offshore conditions are improving nicely and the weeks ahead look excellent.

The cooler water temperatures, which have dominated the Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo area for the last six weeks, refused to move. This cooler water has brought with it some incredible TUNA action but has really depressed the SAILFISH activity which is normal for this time of year. Last week's International Billfish Tournament, with a field of just over 100 boats, managed to land 36 SAILFISH, 3 MARLIN, and 4 DORADO in three days of fishing. The largest SAILFISH scaled in at 79.2lbs, the largest MARLIN at 257.4lbs, and the largest DORADO at 41.8lbs. By Ixtapa/Zihuatnanejo standards this was an extremely poor performance. Fishing outside the tournament, French angler Mr. Minvielle fishing aboard the Super Panga, 'Leydy', landed 10 YELLOWFIN TUNA, 1 DORADO, and 32 BONITOS in two days of fishing. On his next two days fishing aboard the Super Panga, 'Securestro de Amor', Mr. Minvielle landed 1 DORADO, 8 BONITOS, and 1 250lb. BLUE MARLIN. Mr. Shane Shelton of Lemoore, CA fishing with Capt. Chiro Barragan aboard the 'Vamonos III' landed 33 YELLOWFIN TUNA, and fought an estimated 500lb. MARLIN for 10 minutes before it through the hook. Inshore, Capt. Adolopho fishing with French angler, Mr. Collomb, landed 40 YELLOWTAIL JACKS, 2 ROOSTERFISH, and 2 SPANISH MACKEREL. Capt. Adolpho reports huge schools of YELLOWTAIL JACKS and an occasional large ROOSTERFISH in the 60lb. class. Offshore, the YELLOWFIN TUNA in the 20-30lb. range have been caught between 10-15 miles out. With the oncoming full moon, historically, we should see warmer water currents and an increase in the SAILFISH activity in the weeks ahead. The warmer currents should also increase the presence of big schools of ROOSTERFISH in the next few months.

Last week's action moved farther offshore with the TUNA bite leading the action. Angler, Bob Mitchner, fishing a combination inshore/offshore for six days with Capt. Adolpho aboard the Dos Hermanos I landed 57 YELLWOFIN TUNA, 3 SAILFISH, 1 ROOSTERFISH, 1 RAINBOW RUNNER, 18 YELLOWTAIL JACKS, and 1 big PARGO. Angler, Mr. Collomb, fishing aboard the Super Panga, Securestro de Amor, landed 1 ROOSTERFISH and 30 YELLOWTAIL JACKS. First time visitor to the Ixtapa/Zih area and owner of Braid Products, Dennis Braid, fishing with Freddy Hernandez aboard a new 35' Cabo yacht, 'Striker', released an estimated 430lb. BLUE MARLIN, landed 2 large DORADO in the 60lb. class, and spent several days chasing school TUNA in the 30-70lb. range. Mr. Braid also did some inshore fishing landing 2 nice ROOSTERS of 25 and 40lbs. The blue water is 10-12 miles offshore with the majority of action being better than 30 miles out. The SAILFISH bite was very slow last week.

Special Note: Registration/hotel reservations for this years Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo Total Tag & Release Tournament are now being accepted. The Spring turnover continue to take place with some excellent offshore and inshore action ob some days. Consistent with the turnover time are some days when the bite just doesn't happen and that was the case last week in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo. Returning New Jersey angler Herb Houghton picked the three best days and he scored 3 SAILFISH and 3 YELLOWFIN TUNA along with 1 ROOSTERFISH while fishing aboard the
Vamonos 3 with Capt. Chiro. One his second day offshore with Capt. Adolopho Mr. Houghton landed 60 YELLOWFIN TUNA. On his final day of inshore fishing, Mr. Houghton landed 24 YELLOWTAIL JACKS and 2 ROOSTERFISH. Angler Bob Mitchner also fishing aboard the Dos Hermanos landed 3 SAILFISH on his first day offshore. Cabela's Outdoors Adventures director, Gregg Severenson fishing aboard the Vamonos 3 landed 1 SAILFISH and 9 YELLOWFIN TUNA. The blue water is coming closer every day and the hot band of action is just about 10 miles offshore. The supply of bait continues to be high and as the water conditions improve so should the bite. The following Months of May, June, July, and August are the very best for some great inshore roosterfishing.
